Freddy freeman and cissie sommerly!
Hi! I was reading chapter 16 of Mystery's Magic of Shazam and I came across an official ship (mostly one-sided because of Cissie Somerly) and I was absolutely like "OMG! That's so cool!".
Don't get me wrong, I really hate that this was presented as a love triangle idea (and I really love her ship with Billy because of the first love vibes and all the sweetness they had in the golden and bronze/silver ages [of the few appearances DC made after acquiring the rights to the characters from Fawcett Publications]). BUT, the idea that our golden girl appeared as absolutely cool but still sweet having a crush on Freddy is much more rewarding than Billy initially, God willing the writers won't ruin it but we know they will, because when haven't they?
Throughout most of my life, especially during high school, I was surrounded by people with physical and hidden disabilities (my little brother and most of my high school friends), and thanks to that I realized how difficult it is to witness things that many take for granted or consider easy, in addition to the flood of conscious and unconscious ableist thoughts in the form of ignorant, malicious comments stemming from misinformation, the fact that they are often left out of conversations or witnessed people talking about them as if they weren't there, and how this greatly affects their chances of experiencing romantic love.
In virtually every comic book, Freddy has been portrayed as a moral support, often sidelined in the plot and subjected to other subtle forms of ableism by writers, beyond the obvious internalized ableism Freddy experienced in the Golden Age and his current low self-esteem. Therefore, having a character who genuinely seems (for now) to like Freddy for who he is, even knowing his disability, and to use that passion to improve as a person is very rewarding, as it's something so uncommon in real life and gives hope that my friends and little brother still have a possibility, however small, of achieving that!
It's great when this positive representation is done in comics, and I hope they don't ruin it but reuse it to enhance the official stories of the main universe.
