Cannot consumption of AI be considered an art expression?

Of course it can, and performance art is art, but I feel like it's important to know that the art being eaten was a series of AI generated images reflecting the artist's experience of AI psychosis and commenting on the way that AI use changes the users' interactions with the world. The images were generated by someone who has been using image generation tools in their art since 2017 and who was educated as an artist using traditional techniques.

The piece that the protester ate was made by an MFA student and wasn't an attempt to "pass off" generated images themselves as art, the art was the presentation of the images and their sequence and variety (there's an element of obsessive iteration visible even in the remaining images - an empty room, the same room with different light, the same room with a smiling woman on the bed, the same woman standing in different poses, which speaks to me of someone furiously attempting to construct a comforting reality and finding the tools in your hands inadequate, but that's just my interpretation of what remains).

For the record, Nick Dwyer was the MFA student whose art was eaten. "The intersection of art and AI" is a huge theme in his work.

Like. He made a ceramic sculpture of an AI girlfriend, then generated an AI image of the sculpture and called them one and two in a series.

He made ceramic "phones" and inscribed them with cuniform and ai image hieroglyphics that he carved into the clay.

I've talked a lot about how I think that AI has a place in the creation of art and I think Dwyer's work is genuinely a perfect example of someone using AI to create art.

Again, I also think that performance art is art and eating a portion of the gallery piece is certainly an interesting statement, but I wonder if the protestor would be as outraged by the ceramic phones with AI images engraved on them. How much human touch or human intention does "slop" need before it's art, or is it fruit of the poisoned tree and must always be considered slop because AI was part of the process?

yeah it's a dramatic and violent piece of criticism to deface work you don't think 'counts' as art-- one that fascists love to employ, btw-- but also as a critic your statements are also open to further criticism. you don't get to sit in judgement of others but have your own position be placed somewhere beyond reach.

if you eat someone's work because you don't think it's art, we have every right to call you a dumbass shithead who didn't bother to actually engage with the medium or message of the artist you attacked.

All jokes aside, lads, Will Ferrell HAS figured it out. If you haven't seen the documentary he made with Harper Steele, I do recommend it. One of his closest friends, Harper Steele, came out as trans into their 30 year friendship. They took a road trip together, no questions barred between them, so that he could 1) try to understand something (transgender identities) that he hadn't given a lot of thought before, 2) get to know his friend Harper all over again-- who she really was, what she had held back, etc.

Accept and love people for who they are. Doesn't matter what clothes they wear, what pronouns they use. If you really love someone, you will want them to be happy. This is seriously, literally all you have to do. This is it.

It really is this fucking easy, cis het people. We're not a threat to anyone except maybe your own insecurities-- which has nothing to do with us.

He did! I posted it for several reasons.

1) I have seen no chatter about this and his comments here, and it’s been almost a year. Look at the RBs— at least half of them are like ‘wait what?? I don’t know he was an ally. Go Will, I’m going to go watch Will & Harper.’

2) I just like the things he said in these articles . I thought they were very fair, eloquent and kind without being condescending or cruel to anyone. Gentle kindness goes a long way.

3) I rewatched Will & Harper and felt like acknowledging the doc and Will. And it’s actually a really good doc that very few people have even heard of.

4) it feels like every day, there’s some celebrity who’s spoken out against us and/or withdrawn their support for the trans/enby/agender/intersex community. Every day, there’s some news story about a new law or proposed law or just people being arseholes that further criminalise and demonise us. I just wanted kind words on people’s dash.

Especially with all the legal fuckery against us. I have lost 3 friends to JKR’s TRF crusade and it’s is important to me that trans/enby/intersex people just see a tiniest flash of hope on their timelines.
