READ A BOOK ART CONTEST!

Need a new book for book club? Want some weird fiction for spooky season? Maybe some art to go with that? Look no further, I am throwing an "art for book review" contest!

CONTEST IS OPEN UNTIL 30th of NOVEMBER

RULES

  1. Read an Abigail Hilton (@alhilton) book. Get them directly from the author here, or through the usual channels on Audible, Amazon, etc.
  2. Leave a fresh review in a blog or social medium of any language. For legal reasons, I can't accept reviews on commercial sites, but Goodreads, Tumblr, Bsky, Mastodon, VK, Facebook, or what have you, are all good!
  3. Message me (here or on Bsky) with a link to the review in question. It does not have to be long or fancy, but it has to be a written review. Using AI to generate it will get you booted from the contest - you don't have to stoop that low! Just read and/orlisten a book and write some words.
  4. Each new review is assigned a number (which I'll tell you) which counts as a ticket for the draw. I don't care if you crosspost the review to other sites, still counts individual tickets!

The final draw will be on the 1st of December. I'll assign a number to each review and draw winners tombola style over at random.org

PRIZES

1st prize A full illustration by me. I can work in any style, but am most known for my paintings. Check my gallery for examples (Bsky, FA, Tumblr, site)

2nd prize A painted portrait by me (go here or here for examples) and a book of your choice by Abigail Hilton (ebook + audio)

3rd prize A book by Abigail Hilton (ebook + audio)

WHY THO??

Because I want people to read Abigail's books and am willing to be your art slave to spread the good word.

Happy reading!

Some suggestions for people who don't know where to begin!

Hunters Unlucky - Goodreads

A xenofiction coming of age novel about the lives and politics of intelligent animals on the Island of Lidian. The first book in the series works very well as a stand-alone and a 4.5 hour FREE sample is available directly from the author:

The first two books are suitable for younger audiences and up, but the novels following those are of a much more adult nature. "Old cat yaoi" gets thrown around jokingly by fans, but they're also excellent depictions of changing societies and how warriors cope with peace.

Pirates of Wefrivain - Goodreads

Absolutely fantastic fantasy epic about pirates and ships and fauns and slavery and politics and kings and dragons and all the most wonderful characters you can possibly imagine.

The series is currently being released as a podcast for FREE, but you can also buy the books directly from the author over here.

Eve and Malachi - Goodreads

A spooky xenofiction series about a rat and a python going on adventures and solving mysteries. Season appropriate fiction for younger audiences, but also very enjoyable for adults who enjoy horror or animal fiction!

we DO grow old and happy. btw.

And you find love and it stays with you.

Older women are so, so beautiful, and older trans women are no exception. Celebrate the beauty of our elders! Celebrate trans beauty!

I wanted to share some more of these, specifically trans women of color. The images I'm posting are from a project called To Survive On This Shore and it's an interview project. I am only posting a handful so it's so worth checking out!

This is Linda, 60

Alexis, 64

Helena, 63

Kendrah, 72 (!!)

Tasha, 65

It was deeply healing to me to discover this project. The site has selected photos and attached interviews and it's definitely worth your time. I didn't include any because the focus of this post imo is transfems but there are a lot of beautiful interviews with transmasc people too if you're interested! But that'll have to be another post 💖

for those interested, the photographer is Jess T. Dugan. The link to this particular project is as follows:

They hate me for my redundancies. And also for my tendency to say the same thing but in slightly different ways. And for my repetition of phrases. And for my redundancies.

In response to the increasing book bans, we are working with this project to get queer books in the hands of queer youth, and we want to encourage you to do the same!

[Transcript: Sponsor Queer Books For Queer Youth

abc and tba are collaborating to sponsor books for queer youth and are looking for community support. We are proud to have already provided 41 care packages to the Fyrefly Institute for the campers of Camp Fyrefly 2025.

Each bookish care package includes:

2 YA books rated for 14-18 yrs

2+ high-quality stickers

2 branded bookmarks

An encouraging postcard with more information about Alphabet Soup and The Book Archive

The estimated retail value of each care package is $43.

Our aim is to raise funds that will help recoup some of these upfront costs, and continue to provide these packages to Camp Fyrefly for 2026, and potentially other local organizations that work with queer youth.

If you'd like to sponsor a bag and help cover the upfront costs and support future bags for queer youth - you can!

Visit alphabetsoupbook.ca and/or the bookarchive.ca to sponser a bag! You're able to sponsor: $5, $10, $20, or $30* (our approximate cost for one box.)

Other ways to support:

Share, share, share!

Are you a business that sells stickers, bookmarks, or other small pride/bookish themed merchandise and would like to offer your product free or at a discount? Get in touch!

Are you in another bookish business or author and you'd like to donate books towards these care packages? Get in touch!

Are you an organization that works with queer or diverse youth and you'd like to have boxes donated to your organization? Get in touch!

Major human pastimes:

  • frying dough
  • classifying things and then arguing about the classifications

on Planet Where Everyone Can Teleport the first person on the moon went there by accident and promptly died. The next dozen or so people also went by accident, and also died. Number 14 figured out that people who go to the moon die and very cleverly brought a sword and six weeks of travel rations. This did not help.

No one on Planet Where Everyone Can Teleport ever figured out why people die in space because they don’t need airplanes and never found it particularly interesting to climb tall mountains. Astronomers use telescopes to take pictures of the ever-growing pile of corpses on the moon.
