I want you to remember something that’s very important. You won, not by playing the game Harlan’s way…but yours. You’re a good person.
There’s nothing I can do. Except maybe… offer you some courage. And a reminder of why your sister walked away in the first place.
My revelation came from…from Father Jud. His example to have grace. Grace for my enemy. Grace for the broken. Grace for those who deserve it the least. But who need it the most. For the guilty.
You wake up knowing immediately that you’re not escaping.
An arm is wrapped tightly around your waist, warm and familiar, Choso’s face tucked into your shoulder like it’s his favorite place in the world.
And then-
A tiny weight shifts on your chest.
Your boy cat is sprawled right on top of you, purring like a tiny engine, one paw resting possessively against your collarbone like he’s guarding you.
You sigh softly. “…I’m surrounded.”
Choso hums sleepily. “…Mhm.”
The cat lifts his head, lets out a soft little mrrp and settles back down, tail flicking once in satisfaction.
When you try to move, Choso’s arms tighten just a little. Not rough- just enough to remind you he’s there.
“…Where are you going?” he mumbles.
“I just wanna get up,” you whisper.
The cat immediately presses his forehead into your chin and refuses to move.
Choso cracks one eye open, notices this, and quietly adds, “…He agrees with me.”
You laugh softly, scratching your cat’s head. “You two are so clingy.”
The cat purrs louder. Choso hides his face in your neck.
“…Is it annoying?” he asks, voice small.
You turn slightly so you can kiss Choso’s temple. “No. It’s sweet.”
That does it.
Choso relaxes completely, arms snug around you again. The cat crawls closer, wedging himself right between you and Choso like he belongs there- because he does.
The rest of the day is exactly the same.
You go to the kitchen- Choso follows silently, standing so close his chest brushes your back. The cat weaves around your legs, meowing and jumping if you don’t pet him immediately.
You sit on the couch- Choso curls into your side, head on your shoulder. The cat climbs into your lap, circles twice, and flops down dramatically.
You lie down- Choso wraps around you without hesitation, and the cat curls up against your stomach, tail flicking lazily.
At one point, you joke, “Do either of you ever let me breathe?”
Later, as the sun sets and the room fills with warm light, you’re under a blanket, Choso’s head resting on your chest, his arms holding you like he never wants to let go.
The cat is tucked right between you both, warm and sleepy.
You stroke Choso’s hair slowly.
He sighs. “…I like days like this.”
The cat purrs louder, pressing closer.
Choso glances down at him, then back up at you. “…He’s very attached to you.”
You smile, petting them both. “So are you.”
His cheeks turn pink, and he hugs you tighter. “…Good.”
And just like that, you’re trapped in the best way possible-
by a clingy boyfriend and a clingy cat who both refuse to let you go.
