““When I was about 20 years old, I met an old pastor’s wife who told me that when she was young and had her first child, she didn’t believe in striking children, although spanking kids with a switch pulled from a tree was standard punishment at the time. But one day, when her son was four or five, he did something that she felt warranted a spanking–the first in his life. She told him that he would have to go outside himself and find a switch for her to hit him with. The boy was gone a long time. And when he came back in, he was crying. He said to her, “Mama, I couldn’t find a switch, but here’s a rock that you can throw at me.” All of a sudden the mother understood how the situation felt from the child’s point of view: that if my mother wants to hurt me, then it makes no difference what she does it with; she might as well do it with a stone. And the mother took the boy into her lap and they both cried. Then she laid the rock on a shelf in the kitchen to remind herself forever: never violence. And that is something I think everyone should keep in mind. Because if violence begins in the nursery one can raise children into violence.””

— Astrid Lindgren, author of Pippi Longstocking, 1978 Peace Prize Acceptance Speech (via jillymomcraftypants)

In 1978, when she received the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade, Lindgren spoke against corporal punishment of children in a speech entitled Never Violence! After that, she teamed up with scientists, journalists and politicians to promote non-violent upbringing. In 1979, a law was introduced in Sweden prohibiting violence against children in response to her demands. Until then there was no such law anywhere in the world.

What a legacy. We’re so lucky to have had her.

I have never had to lay a hand on either of my children apart from the time I shoved one out of the way of a falling door that had come off its hinges - and they are both kind, compassionate, respectful and thoughtful people. This came from taking time to explain things to them, by treating them as people rather than objects to control. This isn’t the quickest way, or the easiest, but it pays off in the pride you get from having helped raise a child who thinks and feels with empathy and consideration for more than just themselves.

Violence against children is only ever about control, and never, ever love.

It wasn't there 😔

I'm not sure if "defect" is the right word. It is living it's life as a pillow. That's like, the dream.

Edit: After a little digging I believe that this species of starfish has a mutation that sometimes occurs, here's a different photo and "biscuit starfish" individual:

couldn't stop thinking about this lil granny square so I crocheted him:

bout time I brought back the Laurel and Hardy flex tape-

From The Killers, 1946. A Film Noir Classic

I’m an archivist, behold my growing collection was of old photos mirroring timeless memes I’ve come across at various places I’ve worked.

I love Tumblr.

just be yourself and don’t care about what other people think! Why would you care about what other people think about you?

(DISCLAIMER: what other people think about you will determine every aspect of your support network, your ability to get housing and employment, the quality of your medical care, how you are treated by the legal system, and how likely people will be to sic the police on you for violating social norms.)

turning point usa is kinda performance art like lets consider that the other founder died from covid in 2020.

>two people start a conservative organization to push covid conspiracies and pro-gun ideals (among other things)

>one dies of covid

>the other dies of gun violence

it’s so on the nose that it’s actually cliché

The last ten years, I have repeatedly said that it feels like I'm living in a 19th century novel. The symbolism has simply been too blatant to be real life.

Just a few quick examples: RBG dying on Rosh Hashanah and Amy Coney Barrett's nomination announcement being a covid super-spreader event; the pro-Trump regatta where the big boats' wake caused the smaller boats to capsize and sink; the SCOTUS case called "Janus," which used the same logic to weaken unions that is dismissed when strengthening corporations in Citizens United (namely, that the speech of the union/corporation may not reflect those of the members/shareholders). Now I can add this one to the pile.

I swear, if I were reading the present as a book, I'd probably have critiqued it as "overblown and obvious," and that the author was "trying too hard." But here we are.

Good Omens: book recommendation

A new collection of essays on Good Omens has just dropped: Heaven, Hell, and everything in-between. Critical Perspectives on Good Omens by Vera Cuntz-Leng (ed.)!

Obviously, I haven't read it yet, but the table of contents promises topics related to queer media, fandom, intertextuality and morality. It also includes an interview with @sendarya, known for her video analysis of the series.

And the best part: the book is open access, so you can simply download it from the website of Büchner Verlag. It is a reputable German publisher, so you don't need to be worried about the source. And no, I'm not in any way associated with them, the authors or the editor; I'm just a Good Omens fan who has been anticipating the release of this book for months now.

So take a look at it if you're interested, and maybe we can discuss some of the contents!

I haven't been active on Tumblr lately, but yes, I did a lovely interview for the book. I was offered a chance to do an essay as well but simply couldn't find the time. Vera and David were both lovely to work with!

Bummer! I wish I had known about this edited volume. I absolutely would have contributed a chapter.

is now COMPLETE! ☃️

Art Credit: this lovely piece was gifted to me by _amip_ as a thank you for donating to the On Our Own Side fund to raise money for victims of abuse

And remember folks, fun, gay festive fluff with a side helping of bittersweet angst isn’t just for Christmas, it’s for life - run to AO3 and read it now!

A beautiful, fun, fluffy story!

Loved every line of it!

I just finished reading this one a couple days ago. It was delightful. Well written and a perfect way to start the holidays. Highly recommended, especially this time of year!

More openly needy” Aziraphale pestering Crowley to put a ring on him is my new Holy Grail (“the decision” they have come to in scene 59 of Good Omens 3 was about finding the perfect style and cut at the local jewellery store, trust).

(And yes, the audio mixed by TikTok user aveyle is a recording of the actual Michael Sheen interpreting Raye’s WHERE IS MY HUSBAND! (2025) live on the Capital South Wales radio station earlier this week.)

Just watched an interview with Michael Sheen and he said smth about "Aziraphale's bookshop" but the autogenerated English subtitles went "A zero sales bookshop" and honestly that's the most brilliant thing I've seen all day
