A Sense for the Comic

@amarguerite

"The more one suffers, the more, I believe, has one a sense for the comic. It is only by the deepest suffering that one acquires true authority in the use of the comic, an authority which by one word transforms as by magic the reasonable creature one calls man into a caricature." -Søren Kierkegaard. Being an exploration of the thin line between fandom and academia, according to Marguerite. Call me Margz and tell me what tags you need!

since it’s olympics season once again, i would like to thank you for writing that hockey player/figure skater dynamic for richard & lizzy in pyeongchang & prejudice 😌 you would think this is a more popular trope but it really isn’t so thank you for scratching that itch for me

Haha you’re very welcome. It is a fun dynamic.

Here’s the link to the pdf of Pyeongchang & Prejudice if people don’t have it: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1r-yjY618MtXGKBoH02wntIAJJG-A6Ole/view

And here’s the links to the (unfinished!) assorted bits and bobs I had of that AU where ice dancer Lizzy and hockey player Ryan “colonel” Fitzwilliam ended up together:

Chapter 2:

Half of Chapter 3 that never got finished and assorted bits and bobs of stuff that would have come afterwards: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-JAkGLTpnSppHjKNMTSYzhm3PdDkdlpqvP-WfWPpJT8/edit?usp=sharing

@kiralamouse has html and epub files, if anyone is interested!

Folder they’re stored in, if any poking around is needed: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1FBquTOyoH9tMLUb-d0fjAAog6hXwLojt?usp=sharing

(Apologies for any transcription errors - I spotted and corrected enough to be fairly certain there are some uncorrected errors left)

Reblogging because I discovered too many transcription errors for my comfort (a LOT of added or removed paragraph breaks that made dialog hard to follow) so I removed the original docs and replaced them with an improved ones:

Still in the same GDrive folder, so if any other links stop working, the folder should show you what’s there currently.

Thank you so much for doing this!!! 💕💕💕💕

thank you for answering my ask!! yes i also feel like there’s always new details to discover in rereads of persuasion and i love it, and i even find myself reworking my opinions and rescinding any criticisms each time with this novel in particular. for example i used to wish anne and wentworth had a few more on-page quoted dialogue interactions like some of the other novels’ main couples but now… idk i kinda like that theyre a (to borrow a cliche) show dont tell couple. like yes we’re told “there could have been no two hearts so open, no tastes so similar, no feelings so in unison, no countenances so beloved” etc but also it’s like. they occupy the same role in their respective social circles, they’re the ones who are always lending everyone else a hand whether it’s mrs musgrove or benwick or harville or mrs smith. they’re the ones you can count on in a crisis. they value capability and competence and hard work. they want to see the world, they don’t want to be stuck in “quiet, confined” lives. they’re romantic, they’re passionate, but when it comes down to it they’ll ruthlessly quash their own desires and wants under their heels and resolve themselves to duty. they’re eloquent, they’re graceful. they love music. saying anne and wentworth should’ve talked more is like saying romeo and juliet should've filed taxes and adam and eve should’ve shopped for groceries. you know?

Sorry, didn't see this earlier, but thank you for this!

That's a really interesting take! I think the novel is Jane Austen at her most subtle and her most like... painting-on-a-piece-of-ivory-an-inch-thick. She does so much with her detail work in this one, even moreso than her other works. It feels like everything is so carefully put together, which in a way echoes the main charcters because they are the caretakers of their social circles in very interesting parallels at times. As in, Anne takes care of the Musgrove children-- Wentworth also takes care of the Musgrove children in the only scene he's in. Anne listens to and comforts Mrs. Musgrove; Wentworth does the same thing.

They're also both very careful people in some ways. Anne's care comes across or manifests in caution a lot, and Wenthworth's character arc is in learning to prize and value that, I think.

Just saw your recent anons and wanted to chime in - a Dalliance with the Duke is actually my favorite ending of the choose your own husband adventure too! The entire series is SO good and I reread it for comfort about twice a year. Same with Pyeongchang and Prejudice - my mom and I were watching the US figure skating championships over the past weekend and talked about the Shibutani siblings coming back and I quoted your line about not wanting to be “Lannisters on ice” to her 😂 you are one of my favorite authors and I really appreciate you sharing your work!

Sorry for the delayed response-- just saw this! I'm delighted beyond measure you read it twice a year!

Sharing this photo collection from the Atlantic primarily to celebrate the incredible courage of the people of Minneapolis in the face of truly unprecedented state terror.

They are doing this for all of us. This cannot be stressed enough! They went after Somali immigrants in Minneapolis because they were confident that it would be easier than targeting Yemeni New Yorkers or Colombian Las Angelenos. What will stop them from occupying other cities and terrorizing other communities is that they will (again) break upon the resolute courage of the people of Minnesota.

I'm glad ilya plays in Boston because literally nothing brings me more joy that imagining him driving on storrow drive. Full road rage in Russian. His fancy car doing 15 mph just like everyone else. He was born for this. His large iced extra extra dunks in his cupholder.

Ilya trying to make a left on comm ave and warren during rush hour. Mad no one will let him go because he's the fucking captain they love him in this city he's a hero.

Ilya losing his shit over space savers and how stupid everyone gets when it snows.

Ilya correcting all his teammates who live in Lexington and waltham when they say they live in Boston.

A delight. He'd love it here it's a city of assholes with good hearts.

Rewatching ep. 1, and loving the little Yuna moment where the suit is telling them that they're going to be SO NORMAL about their Asian player, like promise, and Yuna has like one split second of eye twitch while Shane fully disassociates and then immediately and charmingly changes the subject/switches the focus to her so Shane can give his perfectly rehearsed general answer and not have to deal with it. Such a great moment of parental care, tbh.

absolutely… and if I can connect this back to my post from yesterday, I think you can easily see how and why she would step into the momager role to act as a shield/buffer for shane in moments like that. which probably would have been SO important and necessary in the early years of his involvement with hockey! just imagine the first time shane gets passed over for captain for a less qualified white kid on the team or harassed by racist parents who are jealous that their kids aren’t getting as much ice time because he’s just too good. or idk even in the awkward exec scene you mention, just imagine the frustration of having to watch your sweet, kind, awkward kid deal with constant microaggressions on top of all the pressures and expectations of future stardom. of course you as a parent are going want to be like actually I’m the adult here and you can deal with me. stay the hell away from my kid. I think what becomes clearer over the course of the show is that yuna still sees shane as that eleven or twelve-year-old who was suddenly thrust into the national spotlight because of his talent and promise (long before before any kid should have to deal with that kind of attention). back then shane needed adults in his life who were absolutely 10000% in his corner and ready to go to the fucking mat for him when people tried shit. but obviously shane has grown up! he’s become an adult who is fully capable of advocating for himself and making decisions not just about his career but also about how he wants to navigate these complicated social/racial/professional dynamics (I love that moment where he’s like no I do not fucking want to give up my vacation and go to wimbledon so their box can look more diverse. I don’t like tennis and I’m not a prop you can use when you’re worried your sport might look too white). but also: part of why I love that scene in the garden so much is because you see how much shane still needs his mom!! he needs her love, her unwavering support, her approval of him and of his chosen partner (even if he plays for boston). he just doesn’t need her to run his life for him anymore.

I’m sorry Orpheus i was too harsh on you…

i was in the physics lab today and we were working with lasers, so the Lab Freaks (legal name) were being very careful to stress that we Do Not Turn Around or Look Behind Us because we’ll get extremely blinded by the power of high strength lasers

and i’m not gonna lie it was actually extremely hard to resist turning around. i misjudged orpheus it turns out this isnt extremely easy actually

okay i’ll be honest i 100% looked back at the lasers. actually multiple separate lasers multiple different times. they were pretty

and i didnt get blinded. so clearly lab safety isnt real and you should always risk it cus taking risks is awesome #gambling

but uh. my ass is NOT making it out of the underworld 🔥🔥🔥
