  • If you see the quote "I refuse to share my body with a man who wouldn't defend it politically" or any variation of it floating around the internet — it was Kat Blaque who originally said it and she would really appreciate it if people gave her proper credit for it but it's gone viral on a lot of different platforms and most of the people sharing it don't know it's from her or choose not to credit her on purpose.

  • Like I just know terfs are going to be parroting it pretending it wasn't said by a black trans woman about herself & her life.

Ever since starting to publish romance novels I’ve been checking out the romance books at the thrift store specifically for the clinch covers, as a reference for what I might want to do with my own books.

As a culture we mocked these to extinction but I think we were just afraid of their power. The modern clinch revival still hasn't reached the heady heights of what they were doing in the 80s! The vintage covers can be really quite explicit. These ones in particular were steamy enough they had to be hidden on an inner flap.

  • This episode of the Smart Bitches Trashy Books podcast where they interview Shirley Green and Sharon Spiak, who were romance novel cover artists in the 80s, is a fascinating look at what a huge industry these covers were. Did you know they had whole photography studios full of props to make these? They’d take photos and turn those over to a painter who’d make something like a couple of these a day. They had it down to a science.

Here is a particular favourite of mine, also by Sharon Spiak!

  • reading Hangsaman for like the 3rd time. Now that i am also a college freshman, the tragedy that at every level as a person and specifically as a women from how her father undermines and dismisses her and her mother’s labor to support his lifestyle confining both to the home as her brother can physically escape to misogynistic professors who don’t take any of their students seriously to the internalized misogyny and social ostracisation that the students enact upon one another to grasp control over their controlled lives under the crushing WASP Patriarchal standards for women where in the end their education doesn’t matter intellectually at all. That until like ~70pgs of the ~220pg novel does she seem to start making a connection and it’s from a version poised between herself and her mother and also it’s sublimated in her emmeshed lack of identity created by her father’s control over her.

Wanting to burn like Joan of Arc to escape it all b/c then she doesn’t have to face her assault and the assumptions of ‘impurity’ and also escape the ever encroaching role of mother. Depending on her scholarly persona to claw any agency and try to assert importance that only heightens her overwhelming loneliness as the path narrows and narrows to become the ‘mature’ adult women she wants to be without the baggage of heterosexual gender roles

(Also ‘no one will dare speak to you without bowing first’ to ‘bow all your heads to our adored Merricat’ both women desiring power counter to the family structure and reveling it firstly in fantasy)

  • #symbolism aside i read an article about that! notice the tapes tied to the birds leg #they are trained to protect airports and other places where drone traffic is prohibited #because apparently birds of prey are the most effective drone prevention #they attach long tapes to the birds legs and the tapes get tangled in the propellers #and when propellers stop moving the bird grabs the casket #this way the reduce the risk that the propellers will hurt the bird #so cool #photos #birdsALT

fuck yessss we love working animals
