Stuff I think about or like

@animalpetcel

Hello hello! I talk about anime, manga and comics here. The Witch and the Beast by Kousuke Satake is a great manga everyone should check out at least once. I like Jason Todd so I am prone to rambling about him and the things that relate to him

Video description: A Black man wearing elf ears and dreads and a bandana on his head, pretending to talk to another person. Onscreen text in white says: "I'm Three Drinks Deep at the Elfsong Tavern and Someone Mentions Wyll Ravengard." The angle changes several times and Cary gets more and more animated as he speaks.

Transcription: (sounds of people talking)

Oh nonono, I'm jumping in here. I'm jumping in here because I read the piece in the Gazette, the piece on Wyll Ravengard.

Offscreen voice: Whaddya mean?

You can't slander this man.

Offscreen voice: What're you talking about?

Cary: You can't slander him. No but hear me - hear me well: he was banished from the city by his father at 17. Mind you, he protected the city from a cult of Tiamat. Tiamat cultists. You know where Tiamat was? SHE'S IN HELL. They tried to bring her to Baldur's Gate, and he stopped it. He stopped it! Nono and see this is why you backed Gortash, cuz you lack critical thinking.

Offscren voice: I don't see how that's relevant (repeats)

Cary: You do. You do. You simply do. You- you're completely mischaracterizing this man: he had every chance to just be evil. He coulda been a piece of shit, but he chose light. Where there is surely a path of darkness, he chose light every single time. For 7 years, he went and made a name for himself. As a hero - the Blade of Frontiers. For 7 years.

7 years, a devil in his ear, trying to sway him to a path of darkness, surely. And yet he chose the path of heroism. And you- and you- and you're calling him a fraud? Wyll Ravengard is NOT a fraud. Lorroakan? Fraud. Wyll Ravengard is not a fraud! Not only - not only does he save Baldur's Gate 7 years ago - when he was a teenager, ok? But he comes back with a band of ragtag heroes and helps protect the city from a cultist? The Absolute cultists?

They - DID YOU SEE THE FUCKING BRAIN IN THE SKY? Are you kidding me? This man has saved this city on more than one occasion, and he's not even 30 yet. HE'S NOT EVEN THIRTY YET AND HE SAVED THE CITY TWICE. And you wanna call him a fr- Get the fuck outta my face.

A gentle request for fanfic writers...

Please remember the following:

  • You pour water into a pitcher. You pore over books when you are absorbed in reading them.
  • You are weary when you're tired. You are wary when you’re cautious.
  • When you're intrigued, your interest is piqued. You stick your head out to peek through a doorway. When you've reached the height of an experience, you've peaked. (Peaking can also be a euphemism.)
  • A dragon’s hoard is its treasure pile. A horde is a large group of people, enemies, creatures, or other beings.
  • Muscles and ropes pulled tight are taut. When you've educated someone, you've taught them.
  • When you are waiting with breath held in anticipation, you are waiting with bated breath. You set a baited hook to lure fish.
  • Your palate is your sense of taste. A palette is for paints and colors. A pallet is for shipping or a makeshift bed.
  • When you are being careful and subtle for a task, you are being discreet. Discrete means separate or distinct; analog has a continuous signal while digital has discretized signals.

I've seen some wonderful fics out there with absolutely wonderful writing, just with a few words switched. It's a bit like finding hair in your tasty food, I'll admit. Hope this helps someone out there!

TBH? Instead of telling people who have infertility trauma (and are taking it out on others) to “just adopt”, we should be telling them to get therapy. Having a baby in your custody does not magically fix trauma and it can often worsen it. Going from struggling with infertility for years and having multiple failed rounds of IVF directly to fostering and/or adopting another person’s child is actually not an ideal situation for anyone involved. That very specific breed of anti-abortion weirdo who is like “I cannot carry a pregnancy to term so you should not be able to abort your unwanted pregnancy.”??? Never ever suggest they adopt an already born child out of the system, they don’t want a child, they want a working uterus and to punish people with a working uterus who aren’t using their own. We handle people struggling with infertility with kid gloves and I agree they deserve grace but so many people struggling with infertility have deeply unhealthy beliefs and views about parenthood and themselves and we need to acknowledge having a baby will not fix that and they need to worry about that more than they’re worrying about finding a vulnerable pregnant woman to give them her baby.

I cannot say I know what it is like to struggle with infertility and desperately want to carry a child that is my own flesh and blood. I do know what it is like to have my body be unable to do things I want it to do that everyone else’s body seems to be capable of doing and that is a deep trauma that lives within me. There is no quick fix to that.

Also, the children in the system aren’t babies that randomly spawned into existence. They are human beings, many with families who are attempting reunification or trying to get custody after their guardian lost custody. Often they’ve experienced extreme trauma. They are not blank slates or toys to cuddle. The embittered and traumatized variety of individual described above is not going to be a good parent to these children. Which isn’t to say that people who struggled with infertility in the past cannot be good adoptive parents, many can! But the people described above will need years and years of therapy and internal work to get to a place where they could be what one of these children need.

"we HAVE to keep these degenerate freaks out of our community" and it's like bro why would she want to be in a community full of misogynist dorks to begin with?? like use ur brain she's not trying to hang out with u lmao

back in the gamergate era there was this boogeyman of the Fake Gamer Girl and it's crazy that we still haven't escaped the "she's DECEIVING us to get into our gross clubhouse full of repellent nerds" mentality

Gonna step outside my usual programming a bit because that light pollution take and a lot of the responses to it aggravated me so much.

No, wanting to see the night sky isn't a twee retvrn to ghibli-ass take. It's not a matter of some anprim impulse to dismantle industrial society for ~nature aesthetics~, it's an extremely visible symptom of environmental degradation that gets downplayed because the externality seems trivial to most people: "Oh no, the night sky, what ever will we do without it."

But it actively disrupts light-sensitive circadian rhythms in plants and wildlife, which disrupts foraging patterns, reproductive and hibernation cycles, and contributes to wildlife population declines. It's not the major contributor to those declines, but it's an additional point of stress in an ecosystem already stressed by climate change and other forms of industrial pollution. And so much of it is wholly unnecessary.

I don't think people realize how far-reaching the problem is, either. That light isn't just confined to the places people use. You don't escape it by just taking the bus to the edge of town. That light carries, in some cases for hundreds of kilometers. Death Valley has some of the darkest skies in the US, and yet, the dome of light above Las Vegas is visible on the horizon over 250 km away! Anywhere within 50 km of a major urban center, just about anywhere in the world, never gets darker than a night under a full moon.

And this is very much a recent problem too. Before the switchover to LEDs, it was relatively expensive to light places. That meant actually accounting for the energy use and making sure it was being used where it was needed. That light was also warm-colored, so it didn't travel as far. With the decreased cost of lighting, it became standard to light places like daytime whenever they might be needed. Lighting didn't get safer, it just got more thoughtless.

The reason you see astronomy-types sounding the alarm most loudly is because they're the ones who have been seeing the full effects of light pollution and its encroachment on dark skies. It's a hobby for me too, but it's partly because I am a night owl who grew up in a small town with nothing else to do. I used to be able to clearly see the Milky Way horizon to horizon when I grew up in the mid-00s. The last time I visited about five years ago, I could only see it overhead. The population has fallen by like 10%, but the skies are brighter. I can tell when the college decided to leave the football stadium lights overnight. I can tell where the car dealerships that added overnight display lights are. I can even see when trucks with the fuckass LED light bars are coming over a hill from 5 km away.

I'm all for well-lit, safe, and accessible spaces for people to work and play at night. But there is an impact from lighting, and it can and should be regulated like any other point source pollution. It's a pretty straightforward and materialist assessment. But go off about the big scary anprims are coming for your society so people can see the stars I guess, that's not at all a reactionary response to hearing about a problem

this is a highly controversial opinion, I have no doubt King Arthur was bisexual but I think he was one of the few people in Camelot not interested in fucking Lancelot. he wanted to retain him as an employee but it did not cross his mind that Lancelot was fucking his wife because Lancelot is such a weird little twerp that he did not perceive him as a sexual being. my interpretation.

So true. The Galehaut/Lancelot relationship was like a dynastic marriage to resolve the conflict between two imperial powers. I like to imagine Galehaut was like “I have decided to abandon my plans of capturing [what is now] all of southern England and surrender to you despite my military advantage, all for the love of my achingly beautiful and spectacular new male wife, Lancelot du Lac.” and Arthur was like “Okay. Weird. Not homophobic or anything but Lancelot? You’re in love with Lancelot?

Co-signed. That’s some real shit you said. Also, unlike Arthur, he was willing to yield and share his lover for everyone’s benefit. And then he died for love. A real freak. One of the best freaks in 13th century French literature.

he’s the most interesting gay wifeguy in literary gay knight history

please, I’m begging all of you, get in the kitchen and start cooking

My stance is that before you embark upon writing your own mythology retelling, you should actually read the source literature you're basing your retelling on as opposed to simply relying on other retellings.

And this is NOT gatekeeping. Not when I’ve got all the material at @arthurianpreservationproject at least for Arthurian Legend. Many translations of Greek myth are available on the Internet Archive as well.

Everyone has bias so basing your stuff on retellings is not only taking someone else’s interpretation at face value, it’s in poor taste. Read the myths and form your own opinions and ideas. Wikipedia and blog posts are not sufficient if you intend to adapt for yourself.

this is a message to all babytrans. you may come across a subreddit or maybe even a 4chan board that is made up entirely of the most miserable trans people you’ve ever met. they have their own lingo borrowed straight from incel communities. but instead of being an incel where cishet men tell each other that women will never want to fuck them because of 2 mm of browbone, it’s trans women telling each other that they will never be a woman because of 2 mm of browbone. it’s trans men calling other trans men pooners for having a round face instead of a chiseled gigachad jawline. but they swear it’s not a toxic community because they’re all hiding under several layers of irony, so you can never really tell if someone is being serious. and it’s very important that you never visit these forums, even out of morbid curiosity

since this post is making rounds i feel like resharing this for no reason in particular
