How do you think age factors into adopting a mustang? Does it depend too heavily on the individual horse to really make calls or are horses at a certain age more amenable to being redomesticated?
I was just talking about this with the folks at Rising Action Mustang Society, who have gentled a lot more mustangs than I!
Their trainer likes 4-5 year olds best. “that’s a mature adult with perspective and experience, but they haven’t gotten fully established in Their Ways. the older the mustang, the more certain they are that they do not require your assistance.
and they’re right!! so it becomes a negotiation about how the humans can make their lives better and easier if they cooperate in these specific ways. vs a younger horse you can really tap into the ol’ 10,000 years of domestication base code like hi! im people! we’re supposed to be friends!”
But also, it totally depends on the horse
that’s me! I’m the RAMS trainer! I wanna add that the negotiation with older horses can be super fun and rewarding when you’re dealing with e.g. a 10+ year old who has Seen Some Shit. because that horse knows they don’t need you, but goddamn you seem to be offering a cush gig.
older pregnant mares or mares with a foal at foot are incredible for that. as soon as they realize the weird little apes are doing free childcare, they lock in.
Not an ask I just think you should know that I have read A LOT of KPDH fics and Front Desk Zoey is my favorite iteration of Zoey outside of canon. Honestly she might even match canon Zoey 😂 thank you for her!
