🩺 THE PITT FIC RECS 💦
I won't lie to y'all. I have a competency kink. I like Jack, Samira, and Robby because they are really good at their jobs, even if they’re not particularly good at anything else. That competency kink undoubtedly spills into my high standards for great fanfic—I like these stories because they are smart, sexy, and well fucking crafted. All are rated M or E, with a fair bit of kink sprinkled throughout, because I know what I’m about. I surprised myself by ending up a multishipper—they all make sense.
JACK ABBOT/SAMIRA MOHAN Samira tries so hard, and is so good, and she deserves a man who accepts her approach with patients and wants to uplift her. And it figures, coming from Punisher fandom, that I'd love a military vet at the fraying end of his rope, aching for a reason to keep on living, who still goes out of his way to respect and even idolize women. I love how the fandom has taken Shawn Hatosy’s accidental wedding ring and run wild with it. I love Jack's need to impress, and I love Samira's canonical daddy issues.
welcome to wherever you are by @ofhouseadama (19,860 words) By the time smoke floods the Emergency Department and the fire alarms start going off, Jack Abbot isn’t there at all. As soon as we heard that S2 would take place on the 4th of July, Jack's PTSD is precisely where my brain went. This story is harrowing and intimate in all the right ways, and nails Samira's ability to keep her cool in a crisis. (I cannot make this post without worshiping at the altar of @ofhouseadama. I'm picking just three of her stories to highlight here, but every one I've read has been great.) hope on this side of the grave again by @ofhouseadama (11,120 words) Robby commits the critical error of making Samira cry. Jack reacts. Fascinating discussions about Dr. Adamson, Samira's focus on racial inequality in healthcare, and Robby's general state of mind. Jack’s a very dreamy knight in shining scrubs. BURY ME 'TIL I CONFESS by @ofhouseadama (10,159 words) Jack Abbot isn’t entirely sure how, but less than five minutes after entering Donovan’s Tavern and making his way to the room in the back, he has a beer in his hand and Samira Mohan in his lap. An incredibly plausible first step for them, once Samira is done with residency. Love a pining old man, terrified of what career choices Samira will make. Sensual as hell, very good Robby speech, smut that'll blow the roof off. Service Before Self by neonheartbeat (29,026 words) Abbot is the Pitt's emergency contact for designation-related incidents. Mohan doesn't quite know how she feels about that. Until, one day, she finds that she needs him. A delightful and seamless integration of Alpha/Beta/Omega dynamics into our healthcare system. Clever, thorough and plenty horny. respectable by @banthacakes (1,785 words) Samira straddles his chest, her knees to either side of him. She presses her thumb down and into the side of his mouth, stretching his lips apart. "Shut up, Jack," she snaps. He scrapes his teeth on her thumb and doesn't say a word. "Can you follow instructions, Doctor?" Samira has a bad day. I love watching Samira snap, and I love watching Jack roll with it until he's desperate. He's so smitten it's ridiculous. and flowers, stronger than cement by @tellingoldstories (15,743 words) Samira and Jack had sex at medical conference in New York almost four years ago. They did not exchange last names, or indeed any other pertinent biographical information. Dr Samira Mohan, intern, has a three year old daughter. Unsurprisingly, these two facts are connected. Jack Abbot has his life turned upside down and becomes a girldad on a dime, which shouldn't be surprising given that chaos is where he thrives. Grinned through this one, very sweet.
JACK ABBOT/SAMIRA MOHAN/MICHAEL “ROBBY” ROBINAVITCH Abbot and Mohan orbit each other very well, and they're both so close to Robby in good ways and bad. I like seeing them hold their hands out to a man who's constantly talking himself out of nice things, who too often takes his personal shit out on others, and force him to communicate right, to admit when he's wrong, and then drag him, kicking and screaming, toward pleasure, and even something resembling happiness.
Man of Constant Sorrow by KirkApologist (24,038 words) Jack and Samira start dating. Robby’s perfectly fine with it. Robby is so not perfectly fine with it. In fact, he's very mean in the way that only he can be, but then he gets forgiven. And, y'know. Seduced. Eventually. One of the hottest threesomes I've ever read, packed with delicious hesitation that feels human and very true to Robby. No Man’s Land by @andthepeople (12,364 words) "Robby warned me it was annoying how you’re always right,” Abbott says. “I didn’t believe him. I told him it was cute.” Samira decides to ignore most of that. “I don’t love that you two talk about me outside of work.” “We’re friends, Dr. Mohan,” Abbott says. “Friends have shared interests.” “I don’t love that you consider me a shared interest,” Samira shoots back, even though her heart is beating a little bit faster for some reason. “You’re interesting,” Abbott says, “and we share you.” Exceptionally good prose and imagery, and great characterization that sold me on this throuple immediately. There’s a conversation through an ambulance radio in this fic that has been seared into my brain for weeks. 86 Days, 87 Nights by @andthepeople (24,335 words) “Maybe this really is like Lost,” Samira muses, later that night. “Maybe we all died and this is some sort of weird purgatory.” It could be morbid, but luckily Robby just laughs. “Sure,” he says. “Why not.” “Maybe—” Samira starts, planning to finish that sentence: Maybe Abbott’s the one who survived, but then she shuts up because that’s a cruel thing to say. “Yeah,” Robby says, heavy, like he knows anyways. “Yeah, maybe.” Lost was deeply important to me some 18 years ago (JFC), and this story captured the feeling of it so well, while also being a remarkably great setting to both talk about medicine and go deeper into character dynamics. Robby and Abbot are established, and it’s very comforting. Fucking brilliant all-around.
JACK ABBOT/MICHAEL "ROBBY" ROBINAVITCH Jack sure seems like the only person Robby can be truly honest with, and the only one he can hear certain truths from. This section could also be called, "I love watching repressed Robby watch hot people hit on Jack." (Generally, though, I must admit that I'm too into power exchange and rule-breaking to find Rabbot super compelling on their own. See next section's description.)
focus on the team you play for by @defyingthestars (7,347 words, wip) About the two senior attendings in the boring-ass old man affair? This fic is a great time. Like a field trip, but with hockey, and an established relationship that feels real and soft, and Jack in dress blues. Safe Haven by @alethialia (40,118 words) Intellectually, Robby knew that was what people did at these things. Drunken hookups at conferences were common, though often denied, if not regretted. Robby had never partaken because that was not his speed, but Jack— Well, Jack had no such qualms. And at an ED medical conference, he was basically a rockstar. He could probably have anyone he wanted. There are a lot of great medical conference fics out there, and this one is popular for a reason. So much longing, wonderfully paced, with very realistic details and surprisingly colorful side characters. Gorgeous!
MICHAEL "ROBBY" ROBINAVITCH/DENNIS WHITAKER This drippy, wide-eyed little rat-chaser needs a firm hand desperately, and Robby keeps touching his shoulders and being tall and kind and encouraging like it's nothing. I am almost ashamed of how weak I am for this dynamic.
now you know by cold_cereal (24,433 words) When Whitaker accidentally sends a dick pic to Dr. Robby, he never thought it would end like this. I… may or may not have sorted all stories in the fandom with the tag “Daddy Kink” by kudos, but the sex was only a sliver of what I loved about this story. The author digs deep into the shit going on in Robby’s head and the religion Whitaker left behind in Nebraska, and makes for a very sensitive and satisfying one-shot slow burn. I know I’ll be coming back for a reread. hold onto me ('cause i'm a little unsteady) by Kay_Jay_Dee (15,118 words) If it was another day—a day before Whitaker found out the guy he had a kinda-sorta thing with, the guy he gets on his knees for, the guy who pulls his hair and ties his hands behind his back and calls him a good boy, a day before he found out that guy was his new boss—he'd ask if Whitaker was being cheeky because he was looking for a punishment. [talking with mouth full] This is exactly the kind of nasty shit I wanted to read. This is some good fucking food. Kinky, bittersweet, left me wanting seconds. Robby's self-denial works into their play super well. [swallows, burps] Delicious.
Please excuse the long post, and comment on the next great fic you read! Thank you to all these writers for the many hours of entertainment. I know I wasn’t able to find everyone on Tumblr, so please help me with usernames in the comments!
