Mike, just like Max, is a huge part of Eleven's independence. Eleven found autonomy and agency through her relationships, which was something she was never allowed to have. Mike showed her how to have friends. Mike showed her the things she loves like Eggos. Mike showed her freedom and how to live. He contributed to her autonomy, he didn't finish it.

Mike wasn't the one holding her back, Hopper was (for her safety, but it was still stifling). Mike was respecting her father figure and following his rules. But even before season 3, El made plenty of her own choices. She was the one who left the cabin. She was the one who found Kali. She was the one who made the choice to go back to Hawkins. Max helped her explore a different side to herself, but to say El was never independent is bullshit. She's been stubborn from the get-go

i truly think that this recent trend of “if you relate to a post about a different identity than your own you are ~derailing~ and taking over the conversation” is incredibly harmful.

i recently experienced some pretty severe transphobic abuse in my workplace (children’s home) that included having food thrown at me, being called slurs, being told i was a pervert because i am trans. one of the managers talked with me afterwards and shared that he had had a similar experience as an Asian man. this wasn’t him derailing my experience, or talking over me, or making things about himself. he was communicating “hey, i know how it feels and how much it sucks. you’re not alone.”

THAT is what solidarity IS. i don’t know what it’s like to be Asian, he doesnt know what it’s like to be trans, but we both had a similar experience and we were able to turn a horrible experience into an opportunity for bonding and comfort.

stop looking at people’s attempts as solidarity as an attack. and hey, you never know - you could find an opportunity to grow closer to other people.

erica getting picked on for being “nerdy” (she wore a D&D necklace or something) and for once she didn’t give some stereotypical sassy comeback, she just rolled her eyes and sighed

she probably ended up ditching science class (which is obviously rare) and walked to the quarry, pissed off and upset - she sat down and she didn’t cry, and when she finally looked up, she saw her brother’s…”not boyfriend” mike, doing almost exactly what she was doing

both of them were surprised to see each other - and were caught doing something no one knew they did (erica crying and mike smoking) they talked for a bit, and eventually erica opened up about how annoying it was to have people always, always expect her to have some attitude or quip or something when she really was just upset

she told mike about the bullies and instead of getting some “oh just ignore them” advice from him, he comforted her and just let he be all in her feelings like anyone deserves

they both went they’re separate ways after that, erica going home and mike staying out a bit longer

erica got home, made herself some food, and plopped down on the couch next to her brother, saying something along the lines of “you’re boyfriend’s pretty cool” and flustering him very easily

though, even with her teasing, erica hung out with lucas for the rest of the day - which was rare, but lucas didn’t mind, and he eventually found out about her and mike’s interaction at the quarry
