Hating yourself is harming others. Like, almost always. Even if you don’t mean it to.

Loving yourself enough to take care of yourself and be kind to yourself is what makes you more capable of helping others and doing good.

You’re not going to shame and hate yourself into being a better friend, a better spouse, better parent, better person, better service to the world. That’s done through love and gentleness. I promise.

And I know it’s work! There is no switch to flip that takes you magically from self-hatred, self-denial, insecurity, and depression to self-love, self care, gentleness, and joy! It takes work and, for many people, seeking outside help! But it’s worth it worth it worth it, not just for you, but for everyone around you.

If you are currently sitting or laying down this moment ask yourself if you are resting or rotting. Change your behavior accordingly

There is no romance in decay when the decaying is easy

You are naught but pawns in my game

I hope some of y'all take this as a sign to rest intentionally too.

if you're "resting" but thinking of all the things you have to do, that's not resting, that's rotting. Even if you haven't done anything all day, give yourself some time to rest and truly relax. When you let yourself relax guilt free, you actually regain energy for your responsibilities.

this post has helped me a number of times since I first saw it. I have realized I was rotting instead of resting, and depending on the circumstance, got up to do something, or settled more comfortably to actually rest.

Thank you.

Technological literacy only exists in a very slim age demographic of people born from roughly 1980 to roughly 2007

Like I know someone who was born in '09, they can't even use the windows file manager to mod the Sims 4, after I made the folders for it!! All you need to do is move the files from downloads to the mod folder

This isn’t me saying young people are stupid, it's me saying, we have a massive fucking problem if young people can't even do simple tasks with computers considering how digital our world is

There has been a deliberate stifling of that education and it needs to stop.

I was here in April.

I need you all to know that a few weeks ago I was at an anime convention and the girl coming up behind me was in a panic because her entire panel was online, and she apparently hadn't read the panelist agreement to know the convention doesn't provide WiFi.

So I said "it's fine, I can hook you into my hotspot and we can download your panel to a local folder" and she looked at me like I'd just started speaking in Martian.

So I said: "I have internet through my phone. We can put your panel onto your computer so you won't need internet. Go ahead and pull up your WiFi options."

She didn't know what that was.

I need to emphasize you have to be at least sixteen to panel at this convention, and most panelists are eighteen. Including this girl. WHO WAS IN COLLEGE.

I showed her how to connect to my hotspot. Then, seeing a Google Drive icon on one of her tabs, I said "okay, we're in business! Go ahead and open your Google Drive."

...y'all.

This girl.

Who had a high school diploma.

And got accepted to college.

Looked at me.

And said.

"What's that?"

I had to explain that Google Drive was the name of the website (I didn't dare say "program" because we were running short on setup time) that she made slideshows on.

I showed her how to download her panel and check that it was working on her computer locally.

And then, as I went to unplug my phone from her computer, she panicked because she thought "downloaded locally" was like using a .webp file.

Y'all, if you are a teen or young adult, I am BEGGING you to learn this stuff. Don't assume you'll never need it because a lot of stuff gets done on phones (notice she didn't even know how a mobile hotspot worked?). Don't let Big Capitalism convince you that these are useless skills. They're not and not knowing them is literally just handing all your data to people who'd sell their own mothers for half a corn chip. And if you're thinking "so? Let them have my stupid Hamlet essay, whatever"....

YOUR TAXES.

YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER.

YOUR PICTURES.

Learn these skills. I guarantee your local library has a class. Mine has a series of classes that literally starts with "how to use a computer mouse."

If you want to take power from capitalism, take control of your data.

and people came at me in the comments for MONTHS when I posted another example of this very problem

There are resources for computer literacy! I found this video, which isn't too old (2 years/from 2024) but also not so new that I'd suspect it of being AI slop (hnnnggg):

I browsed through it and found it looked good!

Anyone got a webpage/text-based resource as well?

obsessed w actors who are obsessed with their own characters like not in a weird “method acting” way or whatever but in a yeah this is my character and this is the novel length backstory i wrote for them in my head and here’s the thought process behind the line i improvised and here’s what i think they did after the ending and whether or not they like olives on their pizza

Voting did matter. Even the worst democrat or in all honesty the next worst republican was not going to do all this exact same crazy shit. Voting cannot fix a broken system but if the system asks you to weigh in on how much more broken it wants to get, you can tell it "no, not that far please" instead of effectively "I don't care, go hog fucking wild"

So please vote in the midterms, for the least evil options on the ballots, instead of telling them you just don't mind who they put in charge of whatever the hell they want.

To back up OP’s post, democrats have won the majority of recent state elections (NPR link), and closed the gap on the few they didn’t. Dems also are notorious for getting stuck having to fix shit and get locked in a constant uphill battle (why it feels like they don’t get a lot done). As for the arguments of “lol we won’t have midterms” or “even if we do win midterms it won’t work so what’s the point”… that’s a form of voter suppression and weak ass defeatism.

The federal government cannot interfere with state’s voting and board of elections, it is unconstitutional and was defended as recently as a few days ago Jan 9 2026 (Politico link). The arguments that it’s not worth it or won’t happen will get louder and worse because the far right know that they are losing power.

Keep track of your local and state elections, check your voter registration status and make sure it’s active and correct, and make a plan to vote. That means all seats from federal down to city council. I get how tired y’all are bc I’m right there with you, but I want to get out of this. If you do too, stop doomscrolling and start being strategic with your attention. Pay attention to your local election boards, start giving yourself grace to learn and grow, if you can get involved do, if you can’t just make sure to get out and vote. Remember voting is not a magic button and it’s going to take decades to fix what has been undone, so pace yourself accordingly.

i promise: however big you think this wave will be, it is bigger

That wasn’t a joke. I aimed my estimate high and then added some.

The wave was bigger.

I like to imagine that, thousands of years ago, humans still stood a (reasonably) safe distance from the ocean during weather like this to watch the waves, hooting and cheering when the spray came closer than expected and left them drenched

This reminds me of tsunami stones in Japan. Granted, tsunamis are *extraordinary* waves, but people did put up markers for basically this purpose.

ID: photo of a rectangular upright slab of stone with Japanese writing engraved on it, standing in a forest. It’s captioned: ‘Tsunami stones’ are ancient warnings written on stone tablets, some over 600 years old, that lie along the northeastern coast of Japan. One that was placed in Aneyoshi after a 1933 tsunami reads: ‘Do not build your homes below this point.’ The entire village survived the tsunami disaster of 2011. Underneath the caption is a photo credit to Ko Sasaki and the New York Times, and the handle @/factsweird. End ID.

Not to go "if you have ADHD just go for a run" or anything, but I am so serious if you have ADHD you should regularly go outside, no headphones no phone no nothing and just stand and observe for a while until you've had enough. Not until you get bored, until you've had enough. Drink your coffee without watching tiktok. Have a bath without music. Turn down the volume in your headphones. I cannot overstate how much learning to be bored is cruicial with ADHD. Life is not just about pleasure, no matter what your dysregulated dopamine system thinks, and when you teach your brain to be okay with being bored, then boring tasks stop feeling like torture. By letting yourself be bored you are yoinking your system out of the high/low binary and allow for the highs to feel like actual highs and not just anything that isn't low. I am so serious go literally touch grass. Listen to the sounds in your flat. Stimulate your body the way it was designed. It lowers anxiety and makes you feel like you're real and best of all it's completely free

I really wish more ADHD mental health care told you WHY things like this matter to our quality of life.

The Hyperactivity in Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is NOT about being physically hyperactive, it's about having a "hyperactive central nervous system" because it's a form of inheritable dysautonomia. The problem with disautonomia, especially the ADHD kind, is that it makes boredom flag to your nervous system as a THREAT, triggering hyperactive and maladaptive central nervous system processes like fight or flight.

But dysautonomia kills you that way. Literally, part of the reason our average life spand increase on stimulents is that it helps manage risk-taking impulsivity that can get us killed by accident, but the other part is that stimulents can regulate a hyperactive CNS such that it is functionally (while impacted by the stimulent) NOT dysregulated anymore. And PHYSIOLOGICALLY that is essential because the physical outcomes of dysautonomia can reduce your life span by YEARS if not decades through self-perpetuating hypervigelence, endocrine disruption, and adrenal fatigue.

So when the ADHD brain goes stimulation-seeking and a doctor tells you to practice mindfulness, it feels like being told "hey go stand in a functioning boiler until you can stop thinking" rather than WHAT IT IS which is the process of re-teaching your body what is and isn't safe.

Standing outside making mindful, non-interpretive/moralized observation of the world helps your brain and body re-acclimate to the idea that absence of that frantic "busy" feeling isn't a threat or a risk to your safety, and gradually reduces the level of distress that just hanging out somewhere triggers for you.

Learning WHY this stuff was being suggested and understanding what it was actually supposed to do went a long way towards changing my relationship with my ADHD. I am FAR more functional now, far less prone to shame spirals and rejection sensitivity, hell, I can **sit physically still for near on an hour at a time** now without feeling like I'm going to crawl out of my skin.

So yeah. Go outside. Let the world narrow around you and take deep breaths until it stops feeling claustrophobic or like you need to climb walls. Learn how to let little sensations become big ones like the way the heat of the sun on your skin starts as a gentle warming and be omes a unique collection of sensory moments depending on how it lands on you. Listen for sounds under sounds and let them fade in and out as you move your focus from one sound to the next. Enjoy. Move on. Rinse and repeat.

When you no longer feel like the world is actively killing you, it's a lot easier to navigate it.

S++ tier addition to the post, thank you tumblr user butts bouncing on the beltway
