Blake seeking Yang out to be her partner in Volume 1 is so interesting to me because you'd think if Blake wanted to get close to someone she'd choose Ruby, the one who inquired about what she was reading and showed interest, not the one who said "Yeah, this girl's a lost cause", but that line is exactly why Blake chooses Yang. She didn't think she wanted a friend, so that's why she didn't choose Ruby, and she doesn't choose Weiss who she also didn't see as friend material because she didn't think they'd get along at all, but Yang's a middle ground, they'd have an amicable partnership, but it wouldn't become too personal. While it's possible Blake met other people during the first day at Beacon, it's more than likely that the only three people she actually properly interacted with was Ruby, who Blake felt would try and be friends with her (too hot), Weiss, who Blake didn't think she'd get along with (too cold), and Yang, who Blake thought she wouldn't get close to but would still get along fine with (just right).
