I think a lot of current media that falls within the category of “all the narrative conflict would be resolved if two characters would talk to each other like adult human beings” is actually trying to be a Tragedy in the classic sense, but it doesn’t actually understand what makes something a Tragedy. Like, there has to be an element of unavoidable fate involved not just…characters who don’t understand what an emotion is or how to express it to another person.
Like, the tragedy of Oedipus is that all of the characters are actively trying to avoid their fate, but the actions they take inevitably work to bring about the fated outcome, despite their best efforts. Not, like, “Oedipus could have avoided his fate if his dad had just expressed his emotions better instead of leaving his son to die on a mountain”.
