wake up dead man spoilers

something I ADOREEE in the Knives Out movies is the way they don't lie to you. if something happened, and you just weren't meant to notice it, they'll still show it! you'll be distracted or it'll be obscured, but on a rewatch?

you'll be able to see that yeah, miles did hand Duke his own glass.

and you'll notice that, when wicks is preaching in good Friday, there IS a small red wolf's head sewn onto the back of his robe

they never outright lie about what you saw. they just don't say the true parts loudly.

So many modern detectives have tried to emulate Sherlock Holmes, and none of them have even come CLOSE to touching Benoit Blanc. That man is Holmes' true spiritual successor. He's a silly little guy. He's gay. He's a drama queen. He has impeccable fashion sense. He loves music. He works with the cops but refuses to work for them. His voice is both goofy and incredibly fun to listen to. He sucks at playing Clue and Among Us. He mopes in the bathtub for weeks when he doesn't have a case. He loves hanging out with The Girls but gets incredibly uncomfortable when women flirt with him. The only reason he can afford his gorgeous downtown apartment is because his husband works a real job.* The only thing he hates more than Rich Assholes are Stupid Rich Assholes. He solved a double (attempted triple) homicide and the thing that made him most upset was plagiarism. He supports women's rights and women's wrongs. He refuses to break the law himself but actively encourages his client to commit arson.

And, most importantly, he and Holmes would fucking love each other. If most of the modern day detectives inspired by Holmes ever met him, he would probably want to kill them with hammers, but he and Blanc would probably end up being penpals and sending each other newspaper clippings about crime or some shit. And I can absolutely envision a teenage Blanc reading the Holmes stories and being like, "Wait, being a silly little gay private detective is a viable career option? Well, I guess I've finally found my calling in life."

Anyway I love the Benoit Blanc movies and I hope they make a million of them

the benoit blanc movies show really beautifully how to write a queer character whose story is not centered around their queerness. it's shown that benoit blanc is gay married (to hugh grant!) it's shown that he participates in queer mediums like musical theater and fashion, but none of those things are ever explicitly remarked on. he doesn't have a big coming out scene because he doesn't need one; and the subtle details about him not speaking to his mother, the way he associates a church with homophobia, allows us to draw conclusions about how his family felt about his queerness without making that the sole conflict in his story. the conflict in benoit blanc's story is not that he exists in the world as a gay person, it's that he's always trying to wrangle a bunch of 30 somethings into not confessing to crimes they didn't commit

honestly really Did Not Like jaguar joe early campaign but he really grew on me like. yeah hes just a woke redditor alpha male type of guy despite those all contradicting each other and also hes a salamander. and australian. and he spends like half of the campaign Very Obviously lying to everyones faces but the other half saying things on the same caliber of unbelievable but believing them wholeheartedly. he also spends like 99% of the campaign as a joke character but if you dig like a tiny bit deeper there's Something There. God. a part of me wants to talk about his very not subtle and in your face mental illnesses but also his name is Jaguar last name Joe and he looks like this

can we talk about how fuckin crazy and like. insanely loaded it is for gillion tidestrider, a paladin, chosen one, champion of the undersea and hero of the deep, to look at a rotting, undead chip staring at him with so much pain and pleading in his eyes as he says “really, look at me. i’m not even here anymore.” and firmly say “i don’t believe that. despite what my eyes see, despite what.. despite what my oath says, i don’t believe that.”
