10Dance thoughts

  • I accidentally played the dub by accident which scared the fuck out of me
  • The TEN DANCE!!! street fighter style title also scared the fuck out of me dhfnfndjdjf
  • Anyways this film is GORGEOUS my god the colors, the lighting, the atmosphere
  • The tension in the first instruction scene had me squirming in my seat oh my god
  • I’m thinking a lot about what Inoue-sensei said about Machida Keita when his casting was first announced. I really do have this feeling when I watch him like “oh he’s embodying Sugiki perfectly,” when in reality his manner is notably different from the manga. I think it’s so delightful when an actor taps into a character in a way where you feel like “oh they were always like this.”
  • I think Ryoma is fantasic as Suzuki, it’s just that a lot of Suzuki’s levity is missing bc of what they’ve chosen to leave out of his internal monologue, but I think this leaves the opportunity to have room for a lot more interpretation about what he’s thinking and feeling during various scenes, which probably just makes more sense for film.
  • Sometimes I have to rewind to catch what the boys are saying bc I’m too distracted by the girls 😔💖
  • First impression half an hour in, it seems that some of the humor has been dropped, which is a decision I understand given the length of this adaptation and its focus on tension. But I do miss the humor
  • The third world yellow filter over the Cuban bar is killing me shfnfnf
  • God I’m seriously breathless by their dances tho
  • I do still wish they’d do an anime adaptation to capture the things that don’t translate to film
  • I’ll be honest, as great of a first kiss as that was, I’m left feeling confused about its insertion into the story and what exactly about that scene led to Sugiki deciding to kiss Suzuki??
  • Also a lot of these translations are not great in small but significant ways. “I can do better” to “I can do better for you”?? downplays Aki so much
  • That subway train sound in Sugiki’s thoughts was sublime and far more evocative than a flashback would have been, and I hope it ended up on the SDH track or else that scene is gonna miss a huge element for anyone who couldn’t hear it
  • The ending felt like they went for this big cinematic wow moment that was a little shallow imo?? Knowing the director, I’m certain they’ll go for a second movie, but I’m left feeling not really sold on cinema being the ideal medium for a story that’s SUCH a slowburn. There’s a lot of depth and development that’s missing, and even just trying to watch it objectively, I felt like things skipped around at parts, even in dialogue, like Martha sometimes felt like she was just saying cool lines and not having a conversation. I was left feeling like I didn’t quite understand why certain things were happening or how the characters ended up in places emotionally.
  • In some ways I think it felt more like a portrait than a fully fleshed out story. I do think it was very lovely and very artfully done, but either the script or the editing came across as disjointed imo. I do think an anime would be a more ideal medium (usually the case with manga, no surprise there), and maybe the interest from this movie will drive something for that (it’s always felt like a pipe dream but like… if they can make this then why not).
  • really recommend the manga, it’s honestly quite special in the realm of BL manga. It’s made with a lot of passion for the sport of dance, there’s interesting commentary on performances of masculinity and femininity, the girls get more dialogue, and the romantic development is probably the biggest slowburn I can think of in all BL, in terms of real-time slowburn and not just timeskip slowburn.
  • I do also recommend watching the movie though! Even if it may fall short of expectations, there’s still really never been anything quite like this for live action BL. It’s gorgeous both in visuals and audio, the dances between the Shinya’s are so stunning, and the chemistry is on fire.

Just finished watching the 10 Dance live action! This will be a no spoilers post on my immediate reaction to it.

I think it looks fantastic; the cinematography is amazing. The colours, the aesthetic and the vibe of it encapsulate the manga really well. I can't even imagine how much hard work was put into this to convey that energy and the costumes??? Stunning.

I knew that, as a single movie adaptation, I was going to get something that sort of encapsulates the story but that was going to be different (That's the nature of adaptation: it works for a different medium and it must cater to it. There's beauty in that too).

I think as a standalone movie it is a good primer to the story. I enjoyed it! It did, however, make me yearn for the manga.

I've first read 10 Dance so many years ago and it's such a dear friend at this point and a title that I hold dear in my heart.

If you've never engaged with the 10 Dance manga, I highly encourage you to do it. I think it is one of the most nuanced relationships that I've seen in a BL; it's not a perfect relationship with people that are flawless from the get-go but they are very human in a way that feels very real and not stereotypical. I also always felt it was a sports-manga through and through with the added element of the growth and thorns of a romantic relationship (And if you've yearned and shipped people in different sports-anime fandoms, this will 100% do it for you). A plot independent from the romance always attracts me to something way more usually! I've been in the fandom on and off; I am missing two volumes from the translated manga, but one thing I can say for sure:

-If you yearn for rivalries and people that want to get the best from each other with the added mess that comes from vulnerability, this is a story you might enjoy.

-If you enjoy seeing a relationship grow in a way that isn't linear and stereotypical (and there will be many bumps down the road!), this is the story for you.

-If you love sports-anime and the relationships between competitors told through the metaphor of a sport, hop in, we have all of that.

I hope the movie will bring many more people to 10 Dance since it's a story that needs to reach more people and I'm definitely happy it will. Hope you all enjoy! <3

The budget for 10Dance is so high?? Like I truly cannot think of another live action JBL with a budget this high? They filmed in England at the famous Winter Gardens in Blackpool and everything??? I guess it's a combo of famous director + bottomless pockets of netflix + it's a movie not a drama.

For me the lack of Japanese in 10 Dance felt very deliberate. I've seen a couple of posts complaining about it, but in my eyes it's a direct representation of how the two characters were raised and are currently living.

Sugiki was raised in England. Suzuki was raised in Cuba. Both are still primarily living within those cultures even if they now live in Japan. They've assimilated to those cultures, that's what they know and are comfortable with. The only area where that doesn't work however is their appearance.

They cannot win the championships because they are visibly Asian. Neither of the dances they are partaking in are Asian so the dance community is racially prejudiced against them. Even they buy into that a bit as seen by how neither Sugiki and Suzuki have Japanese people in their makeup/hair stylist team. That's a concious or unconcious choice on their part layered with the belief that the best artists for the dance forms cannot be Japanese.

It is a clear representation of Asian diaspora trying to assimilate to the culture they have immigrated to, but unable to runaway from the fact that despite everything they do they can't escape their appearance which visibly marks them as the Other.

The lack of Japanese culture, Japanese people aside from the central characters, and settings in Japan that feel like it could have been shot anywhere really hit that sentiment home for me.

People who use "fanfiction" to insult a piece of media don't understand fanfiction at all. Fanfiction is a labor of love and dedication and time. Sure it might not be accurate but at least you can tell the person behind it actually cared about the thing they're making while dogshit pieces of media are there just for cashgrabs

'In his true form, He Xuan stood taller than Hua Xie, but not as broad. Though you wouldn’t know it by looking at him (Hua Xie looked like a stiff breeze could take him out), his servant carried with him a truly stupendous strength. Whatever he had done with his life before finding his way into He Xuan’s sea, it had made him as strong as an ox and with it came the sort of muscles that made the slender cut of He Xuan’s robes sit poorly across his shoulders.

“It’ll do,” He Xuan ultimately decided, because even ill-fitted robes were better than looking like something that had been recently butchered. Where they were going, someone might take that as an invitation. “Put this on.”

Hua Xie caught the mask He Xuan tossed at him, turning it over in his hands. It was a simple thing, a coalescence of He Xuan’s own ghostly qi shaped to look like a black koi. Once Hua Xie had tied it into place, He Xuan stalked around him critically. Between the robes and the ghost qi mask, any scent of human was all but eliminated, everything about him bristled with He Xuan’s own essence. That should be enough to mark Hua Xie as his and keep any bold ghosts from making a grab at his servant.'

He Xuan dosen't know how strange the person he brought home truly is. (。•̀ᴗ-)✧

— ...Explain... What makes a person good? Why strive to be good at all?

— Not all people in this world are good. But most want to be. Even bad people try their best to pretend to be good, — he paused for a moment, mentally weighing each phrase. — As for the question of why people do this... I think it's because of the rule "if you are good to others, others are good to you". There is no other way to make friends, create a family, or find like-minded people who want to be around. Without all this, you will not know true love, nor sincere affection, and you risk being left completely alone, wary of everyone and everything. What fate could be sadder? You see, being a bad person can be too painful.

Perhaps I am slow, and everyone has written about this a ton of times, but I have only seen such thoughts in Wanderers.

But I was delighted with this dialogue then and now. Initially, Zishu wanted to say something banal, like: "Because it has to be that way." But this is not an answer to the question, but a rule that does not work in absolute terms, as Zishu himself noted: "Not all people in this world are good." And it does not work for a person like Wen Kexing. He saw how his parents paid for it despite all their kindness, and how evil people lived in luxury. So, to the words: "It has to be that way, it is so comfortable," he would either laugh or just smile politely. In addition, Wen Kexing ended up in the Valley of Ghosts and suffered for 20 years, trying to survive, because of others. He was forcibly deprived of a happy childhood, the right to choose. And such an interpretation: "It has to be that way" deprives him of a choice again. Therefore, Zishu's final answer: "You see, being a bad person can be too painful" hits the mark, even though he did not know Wen Kexing's past at that time. He doesn't dictate what is right, but presents an answer to the question. More from his position (Zishu played the role of that very bad person for a long time), but this is the answer. And the choice itself is up to Wen Kexing

And this is what I was looking for, without even realizing it

One of the many things I love about The Summer Hikaru Died is that explores the eroticism in horror. I don’t think terror and sensuality are as far away from one another as some might think and I love horror that blurs the line between the two.

Just as he can't truly embody Hikaru, I can't bring myself to completely see him as Hikaru.
