For: baefonged

From: Your Secret Santa! Happy Christmas/New Year! I’m really sorry for posting this till now but I really hope you enjoy it :)

It was pretty annoying. Lin didn’t quite understand why people tend to say that passing out was a moment of darkness, shock and then, nothingness. For her it was a blur.

Two of the three men that had appeared out of nowhere had been chased for one of her officers, the other one of those thieves stayed behind to delay the capture of his teammates, it was a young man and an earthbender. It all had happened in a rush, she was focused trying to calm down the man in charge of the construction and she could not see, in the middle of shouts of anger, the rock that had been thrown at her.

“Right in the face,” she thought, annoyed.

“Chief? Chief Beifong? Are you alright?,” It was one of the officers, Wu was his name, he had stayed behind the moment he saw his boss splattered on the ground.

“Yeah,” Lin said, suppressing a groan, “I’m fine. Where are those bandits?!,” she half shouted once she remembered everything.

She and her officers were to take a watch to supervise the constructions of the gaits for the new park of the city. “Harmony Park” was its name, a puffy and ridiculous one, Lin thought. It had been months since the avatar and that other kid, Asami Sato, had gone through the new spirit portal. Both President Raiko and Tenzin had agreed that it was better to expand the city to the outside instead of reconstructing those fallen buildings of Republic City.

Since it was Christmas, and after the almost extermination of the place, lots of officers had requested the day off, and Lin has consented. She; however, new this was no time to lounge around. With Korra gone, and new spirits coming out of that thing in the middle of the city, someone ought to establish order and assure the security of the streets. Besides, it was not like she had especial plans for tonight, Su and the rest of her noisy kids had returned to Zaofu after all, and her apartment got way colder than the north pole with all this snow; so when vice president of Future Industries asked for a last minute guard to accompany him to check the progress and some minor issues, all she had to do was pick up the two officers left and take off.

“Shirong went after them,” said Wu, preoccupied, “I believe they were heading toward the south of the city.”

“Go join him. Where did the other thief go?,” Lin was scanning the surroundings now. There were some builders hiding behind some old debris and tire tracks in the snow, where the vehicle of the bandits had rushed to escape, but there was no sign of the young earthbender.

“The one who threw the rock went into the spirit forest,” said Wu, noticing the movement of the chief, “I’ll follow the tracks, we’ll notify you when we get the other two.”

                                                        ***

Lin considered the structure of this park incredible, not that she would admit that to anyone, but there was something in this place, a deep aura would be the perfect description, but since she was not the spiritual type, she could only think it felt as if someone was staring at her. A piercing stare that wouldn’t let her alone while going after the outlaw.

Harmony Park was the name of the area surrounding the new Spirit Portal, it was a 50 miles radius circle, with four entrances, one in each cardinal point. The northern gate leading to the Earth Path, the southern gate to the Air Path, eastern and western gates leading to The Fire and The Water paths respectively. At the beginning, architects had designed a simple park with four paths that would guide visitors from the main gaits to the core of the place. To honor the avatar and to represent the union that had given birth to Republic City, each path had been named after one of the four great nations. Along side these roads, were statues of all the past avatars, the first one of them all, avatar Wan, was located in a sanctuary in front of the portal.

But that was about all the information that she, and the rest of the people involved in constructing this, had. When the construction of the four paths and some other rock structures had been completed, Tenzin and his kids had carry out a “cleaning ritual”. All Lin was aware of was that the airbender’s smoke was to call back the spirits and invite them to join the human world again. However, soon after the ceremony had finished, fully grown trees began to sprang out of the earth between the paths, the other unshaped, weird looking rock structures (designed by Huan of course) were completely covered by spirit vines, and clouds of mist gather among the trees. Everyone knew at once this place had been created for and by the spirits, the trees had an ancient and mysterious appearance, and even now, in the midst of winter, the leaves hadn’t fallen, instead, they stayed in their branches, as still and firm as if it was summer.

She was walking down the Water Path, since the statues in every path were arranged so that the eldest avatars were near the portal, and since this was a very large park, it took Lin a while to find herself in front of Korra. She was aware that it was not very likely the thief would take one of the main roads, but since it was not allowed to use her bending skills inside this park, she had decided to try and see if the youngster had avoided the creepy mist in the middle of the night.

“So at least you’re not a coward,” thought Lin a bit impressed, “is that or you’re a lot more stupid than I first though.” She observed her surroundings. At the beginning of the constructions, benders were called to help clear the debris of the fallen city. After the cleaning ritual, construction resumed, but this time spirits wouldn’t allow bender to use their powers. They, the various spirits that had come back from the portal and their unique world, turned hostile against anyone who showed a particular ability in bending any element.

After this incident, and lots of injured people, Tenzin’s kid, Jinora, had made peace with these creatures, but they did not want any bending in this place. Since then it was stated that no bender was allowed to use their abilities inside the boundaries of Harmony Park. Lin new this well, but it was getting darker and there was no sign of the bandit or his whereabouts. She knew

he couldn’t be that far, after all her “passing out” didn’t last more that fifteen seconds or so. She was sure, experience speaking, that the earthbender shouldn’t be that far if he had taken the main road. But, and Lin thought this was the most likely, the thief might’ve had decided to make a long run through the woods, to avoid being out run and getting caught.

There were not spirits around as far as she could tell. She wondered which way the thief would have taken and if it was too late to chase him. She sighed deeply, it seemed to her that age was now interfering with her work.

“Huh, look at you,” She was talking to Korra’s statue, well… at its general direction, “those sculptors got you all wrong. You usually don’t have your mouth shut for so long.” She was wondering where was the young avatar now, and what she was doing and whether or not she was aware that she had made so much more for this city in a short time that Lin in her whole career. She remembered those nights when she and Su would have to lone it since her mom was caught in a “Major Issue”, they would be forced to take care of themselves, after all chief Toph Beifong was always busy, “Enough nonsense. Time to work.”

                                                    ***

The moon was a white sphere shining upon the night sky, but thick branches wouldn’t allow her to glimpse something farther that the tree tops. At some point in the attack she was force to go into the mysterious forest. Lin wandered, not being able to figure out which way she had come through. There was no sound more than her footsteps, her sharp breath, and the creaking noise of her armor joints moving. It was disturbing, even though she couldn’t see the eyes anymore she still had that feeling, as if someone was watching her every move. Lin couldn’t believe things were going this way, at this rate the bandit had probably escaped.

Everything had happened so fast, she had barely escaped. At that moment, when she found herself in front of Korra’s statue she kind of lost track of time, and Lin wasn’t even sure why. It was not like she hadn’t made up with Su and her mother. But after being hit by an amateur and having to chase him in a place full of intangible threats, giving him a chance to outrun her and even the possibility of getting away…well this was not her night. Lin had thought there wouldn’t be any problem, she’d checked and there were no spirits near her, and she would only use her bending to check the thief’s location through the vibrations of the earth. Guess that one had been the problem. Her mother would always complain about how she and Su never actually got this technique right, they could only use it by stamping their foot on the ground, creating waves that’d help them scan a certain area, unlike Toph that used it all the time without even thinking.

The moment her foot had touched the ground the mist among the trees shivered. Purple eyes started to appear in the darkness, surrounding her. There were unintelligible whispers and suddenly she was being attacked. The hits came from every direction, she tried to dodge them, block them with her metal uniform, Lin wouldn’t allow herself to lift a rock because she didn’t want to disturb the spirits even more.

“Calm down! I’m not your enemy!,” Lin shouted, but it was in vain, “I am Lin Beifong, chief the police of Republic City, I was trying to find a bandit that got inside this place, I meant no harm!.”

“Benders!”

“Liars!”

“Get out!”

“We don’t want you.”

“We don’t need you.”

Lin heard the voices, there were many: low, pitch high, young, ancient, dark. She could hear the voices, but she couldn’t make out any form or face, she could only see the eyes, floating on the tree tops, looking at her. Hits coming in every way.

“Go away.”

“Go away.”

“Go away.”

The mist started to close around her, she couldn’t see more than a couple of meters in front of her. She started to run, thinking that maybe she could lose them, but the punches (she figured they were punches) got heavier and faster to the point she was forced to move the earth and create a shelter. But the voices wouldn’t stop, and the hits to the dusty walls got louder and louder, as if the noise was transmitted directly to her brain and not to her ears.

“Go away”

“Go Away!”

“I mean no harm!,” she shouted again, her temper rising.

“GO AWAY!”

ENOUGH!” She stamped her foot on the ground while lifting her arms, then she punched the ground beneath her violently, her shelter fell and  an earthquake hit the place. The trees shook and the voices faded away at once.

Now, she was standing up very still. She sighed deeply not knowing where to turn to.

“Are you lost, young master?”

Lin startled. It had been a voice, right? Or was she hallucinating. She scanned her surroundings, the trees were silent, the mist curving and moving lazily, as thick as ever. It had been a voice, she was sure, it had been deep and ominous and real. But it had been…as if the voice, the very sound had died the moment it had begun. Queer, but this was a spirit forest and she had been attacked once, she wasn’t going to allow those suckers try to beat her up again. She extended her left arm, slowly and cautious, with a subtle move of her elbow and forearm a sharp metal blade appeared. She waited. Nothing.

“I wouldn’t call myself young these days,” she called out.

“For someone who had seen hundreds and thousands come and past,” said the voice, “I shall call you young or little girl if I please. Keep your sword, young earthbender, you won’t need it where you are going. Better to say, it won’t help you…”

“What are you…”

“But you already know this, don’t you?,” the voice continued. Lin was watching everywhere, but it was useless, the source of it was probably moving without her being able to notice its movement. “You know you can’t fight me” said the voice from the tree in front of her. “You all benders think of yourselves as the all mighty, but have to faced the truth sooner or later…” now the tree on her left was talking, she started to feel a black feeling inside of her, she couldn’t see nor make out where the enemy was. She was exposed, she was… “Vulnerable. Yes, you are not as foolish as I thought. Or maybe is just that you are weaker than the other ones.” Lin was thinking hard now, she’d better start moving. “You can run, as you have always done. You can turn and follow a dream, a dream to somehow contempt a mother that never really wanted you…”

“Shut up!” This was nobody’s business, and she was getting anxious, not knowing why in the first place, it was not as if she hadn’t faced stronger foes in the past.

“We spirits has struggled for so many years, always longing for a moment of peace, ever since life was created. We are the energy that surrounds this world, and the ones to give valance, but it has been you, flesh people, who had thrown the world on chaos in so many occasions. ‘Why’ we wonder. Is it because you humans has a thirst for destruction? No, it is because you are weak, too vulnerable and too easy to crumble down. You cannot tolerate a world that functions in such perfect way, a way you’d never know nor reach…”

“That’s not…” Lin began, but it was pointless.

“You dare cross our boundaries, and threat our kind with your stolen powers. But you are doomed, destined to fail. Because I have seen what your life has been and what it will become. You, Lin Beifong, who was never enough for her mother, whose father wouldn’t even give a second glance the moment he parted, who permitted her sister to perish and wander strange lands alone, who could not stayed with the man you loved…” The voice was cold, and Lin felt as if ice was starting to appear at her back, she felt a chill and a pang of pain in her pride with every word the unknown spirits spoke.

“You are mistaken,” she managed to say, “I had solved all those problems that I…”

“All of them? Are you sure, young earthbender?” The voice seemed amused.

“Yes.” Lin stressed, “All of them, solved. I have made peace with my past ghosts.” But she knew this was false, and the spirit knew it too. Her mother had been always a challenge, a rock, an impediment, her hero and the one she feared the most. At one moment it was the person she would always trust and at the next, the one she wouldn’t be able to count on. This had been true for her for so many years, always trying to please her till she got bored and tired and felt everything was pointless. Then, when they had been reunited, and had gone to rescue Su and the rest of the family, everything went fine, they had made up, but it had been so quick, so fast, it hadn’t felt like all that pain that Lin has kept inside of her for all those years could vanish with just a hug and some words.

But no, this was not Lin thinking, this was that spirit, talking her into losing her mind in this damned forest.

But then if that was true…why did she felt as if everything the spirit had said had been true. She felt like that because she knew, deep inside, that was just what she had been thinking since the rescue…. this was no good, she was feeling confused, a tiny bubble of hopelessness started to surge inside of her, and that sense of not being in total control and with no shelter at all that had haunted her when she was little began to crept inside her.

“No, I won’t allow you to..!”

“Mom! Look! I did it!” It was her. Lin was astonished. She stared at the figures that had appeared out of the mist of the woods. It was her, little Lin, practicing. She remembered that day. It was the the day she was supposed to start her metal bending training, she was young.

“No, no, no! You’re doing it wrong! Again!”

Little Lin moved her body, bending herself as a silver rock elevated and started to contort and change its shape as she moved. She looked pressured, this had to go right. Her mom was here, and she had decided she was going to teach her metalbending. Not the basis, but the whole thing! It was fantastic. She wouldn’t just let one of her officers do it for her. Lin knew she had to do it right.

The rock, suspended now in front of her, was changing, slowly, but the way it did was rough. Her mom stamped her food and everything shook.

“NO! Again!” Her mother was angry. She didn’t like when her mom got mad at her. Maybe there was something in Lin’s face, or maybe it was just the way she let the metal chunk drop to the ground, either way, her mom sighed deeply, tired, ‘disappointed’  Lin figured. “All right, leave it there. Maybe this is just too much for you. I just thought you’d be able to handle it by now.” Her mother turned around and left her there, the rock still at her feet.

                                                    ***

Lin was sitting on the ground, her head resting in her knees. The voice was long gone. She had spent hours in this positions, though she wouldn’t know this for she had been invaded with past fears. She was a little girl again, she feared of her mother and her disappointment, she feared of her lack of capacity. She suffered and was insecure. Why did she, when it was pretty obvious that she was not capable, had decided to stay at republic city and become new chief of police? She was a mess and she was useless,  her mother didn’t love her, her sister didn’t love her, her father had left her, and her boyfriend had dumped her for someone else. Now she was sure her position had been given just for her last name, just for the fact that she was Toph Beifong’s daughter, just because she had been dating the heir of the air nation, just to give her something to do.

She felt a cold sensation crossing her body, she wouldn’t move, she couldn’t. She stayed there. So what if nobody found her. They would be glad. Now they could give the charge to someone better. She felt terrible, like a void had appeared in her insides and wouldn’t allow her to feel things again. She wanted to cry so badly, but the tears wouldn’t come, and that made her feel desperate.

Suddenly, the mist around her began to move again. This time, Lin thought, she wouldn’t run, she wouldn’t attack or defend.

“You can swallow me, if that’s what you’re after, nothing important will be lost.” She said more to herself than to anyone else.

Blue light was making everything shine around her, but she couldn’t see it anymore, not the colors, not the sounds. For her everything was grey, everything had always been…

“Lin?” It was a female voice.“Lin! Is that you! Wow!, you really beat me this time”

She recognized that voice, though when it was cheerful it was quite hard to place. She jerked her head up, standing in front of her was Chief Beifong, a misty, kind of bluish Chief.

“What in..?” Lin stammered.

“Mom! Did you see that? I did it. I thought I couldn’t but I just felt the earth inside of it and…just did it!” Little Lin was sitting right behind of her. She looked pleased. And proud of herself. Toph walked toward her child, going through the Lin that was sitting there hunched and feeling warmth that  surged inside her chest.

“Well, seems that not having me around make you do things better. Sorry i yelled at you. You did great.” She stooped and hugged her kid. The look on her face calm and in peace. As if this scrawny little girl was the source of her happiness.

Mother and daughter parted holding hands, and Lin, now out of her trance, followed them as the mist around them retreated more and more, till the moment Lin found herself back in the Water Path, alone, the figure of herself and her mother vanished. The forest didn’t seem hostile now, it seemed rather familiar. She had been lost before, she knew that now. Not the moment when she got into the forest, but before. She always thought her mother wouldn’t love her, but now she understood Toph always had. She saw something moving behind a statue of a woman with a fierce look and heavy winter clothes, one of the past avatar from one of the water tribes.

“Who is there?” She called, her voice surprisingly calm. She wasn’t afraid anymore, she wasn’t lost. She was in peace, in balance.

“Lin?” It was a whisper, and a faint, almost ghostly one. She knew right away it was a spirit.

“Yes”

“The old lady from the swamp said you needed help. I thought it was the other boy, but he told me you were inside”

“The other…” That’s right! She remembered all of a sudden, she had entered Harmony Park to chase a bandit. “Where is he?”

“South, waiting for you. You know how to get there, right?” He was already turning to the woods.

“Wait!” She said. Something warm inside her made her feel good. “How is she doing?”

“Fine, I guess. A little cranky…” Lin couldn’t help but smile. “I think it bothers her that she can watch but no longer do.”

“Sounds like her.”

Hello praxceptor, I’m your secret Santa :) Hope you like the gift & stuff ><

You asked for ”art of the Kainora family” and I was happy to oblige. But as you surely noticed, I forgot about the oldest girl (Kamala)…so lets just say she’s the one taking the photo/is camera shy? ^^”

From left to right: Kai, Aang II, Kanna and pregnant Jinora.

I went with DEFAULT FUTURE AU. Kai took the most time and he’s still looking very disney…ish :/ I like Kanna best (my bias towards water-benders showing through?) Also, gave Jinora some lipstick, not sure if it fits her character, but it makes her look more as an adult?
