Tolkien’s post-Lord of the Rings musings on reconciling the idea of inherently evil people with Christian ethics may not have reached any satisfactory conclusions, but I have to confess that the idea of goblins as unfathomably wise and ancient creatures who were old when the Sun and Moon were young who simply choose to be awful little gremlins has a certain zip to it.

Goblins after witnessing the last three thousand years of bullshit go down in Middle Earth: “I wish there was a name for the type of mode I’m about to go, but I just can’t think of one”

sometimes I talk about disliking copyright/IP on here, and I always try to stress that the reason these conversations matter is because copyright law is used in real life to hurt real people. I want to highlight a current example of this happening which I haven’t seen talked about on my dash yet.

Solar Being is a small business run by two natural hair sculpting artists. their art has gone viral online a few times, and one of their most recognizable creations are their shaped hair puffs:

Solar and Ether, the creators behind Solar Being, pose at a table. Solar is wearing star shaped natural hair puffs. Ether is wearing flower shaped natural hair puffs.ALT
Solar posing on an outdoor bench. She's wearing star hair puffs decorated with gold charms.ALT

recently, their business has been under attack by frivolous DMCA & copyright infringement complaints by a competing company. Solar Being has had to close pre-orders for their hair extensions and redirect the funding they raised through a kickstarter campaign into now building a legal defense fund, at the expense of their allocated labor and production budget. in the meantime, they can’t even post uncensored photos of their star puffs to social media without facing copyright claims. this issue goes beyond just promotional materials and is also affecting any posts where they (or their customers!) have their hair puffs visible.

on Solar Being’s legal defense page they say they “believe [geometric hairstyle] designs should remain free for others to use, reinterpret, and express through their creative and commercial endeavors”. and if these copyright infringement complaints are held up, it will likely affect the rights of other natural hair sculpting artists to create designs like this.

if you’d like to support Solar Being’s legal fund they’re accepting donations now, and I’d recommend supporting them through social media as well. I’m not personally associated with Solar Being and am just repeating what they’ve already said through their website and social media.

lots of people around copyright/IP discussions like to talk about supporting artists, and if you want direct that supportive energy somewhere productive I feel this situation is one that deserves your attention.

Yeah, sure, seeing new things is helpful as a fantasy writer. But. Don’t make the mistake of assuming that exposure to new things is the same as traveling. You know what else exposes you to new things?  The internet. Documentaries. Books. Freaking Youtube. So when you’re bored of cats and cooking tutorials, go on an adventure!

You wanna write create some fantasy creatures but don’t know where to start? Go check out some videos The Weird Creatures Earth has Had.

Want some inspiration for your Super Evil Villain’s Villanous Deeds?

Or maybe you want some weird locations to kick start your Fantasy World Terraforming?

Or maybe you need knowledge of bunches of historical places and cities and cultures?

But maybe you’re basing fantasy on the modern world?

Okay but lets say you want to start from the same inspiration as GRRM? (and part two!)

That’s just the stuff I could quickly grab. Things I’m subscribed to, that I know offhand. There is So. Much. Stuff. Online.

TRUTH. What you need is imagination, and you don’t need to go anywhere to use it.

The best thing about the internet is that it means its not just the fortunate sons that get to learn, and explore and imagine and write. We get to see stories from all over the place, from all sorts of people, who bring All Kinds of New Ideas.

I like you.

insane some people don’t use ad blockers? babe why r u rawdogging the internet

it’s a CESSPIT out there. wrap it before ya tap it babes!!!

notes are terrifyingly full of people telling on themselves. this is like showing up at an orgy and finding out half of the participants don’t know how to use a condom bc it’s “scary” and “confusing” and “im lazy lol”. THIS IS NOT A LOL MOMENT

Ok I’m reblogging again with an actual addition after reading some of the notes, because more people need to understand that the majority of the the time, YOU DO NOT NEED TO USE THE APP IF YOU ARE ON YOUR PHONE.

Want to watch Youtube on your phone without ads? Download Firefox. Import your bookmarks from Chrome or Safari or whatever web browser you are currently using. When you are setting up your Firefox account go ahead and install general ad blockers, Ghostery and Ublock Origin are the two I use, because just using one, sometimes one or two will slip through. I also HIGHLY recommend installing Sponsor Block too, so you never have to see your fave Youtubers shill the most dubious products and services on earth.

Then go into Settings on your phone, and disable the Youtube App. It will try to scare you into not doing that. Do not listen. Disable that fucker. Then, launch Firefox, type youtube.com into the search bar, and et vóila. You are now on the Youtube Mobile Website, which to me is arguably better and easier to use than the app anyway. And you can do this for a lot of things that are apps on your phone. Just start using the mobile web version instead. Even Tumblr is fairly easy to navigate on the mobile web these days (boy was is not always though).

Not to go “if you have ADHD just go for a run” or anything, but I am so serious if you have ADHD you should regularly go outside, no headphones no phone no nothing and just stand and observe for a while until you’ve had enough. Not until you get bored, until you’ve had enough. Drink your coffee without watching tiktok. Have a bath without music. Turn down the volume in your headphones. I cannot overstate how much learning to be bored is cruicial with ADHD. Life is not just about pleasure, no matter what your dysregulated dopamine system thinks, and when you teach your brain to be okay with being bored, then boring tasks stop feeling like torture. By letting yourself be bored you are yoinking your system out of the high/low binary and allow for the highs to feel like actual highs and not just anything that isn’t low. I am so serious go literally touch grass. Listen to the sounds in your flat. Stimulate your body the way it was designed. It lowers anxiety and makes you feel like you’re real and best of all it’s completely free

I really wish more ADHD mental health care told you WHY things like this matter to our quality of life.

The Hyperactivity in Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is NOT about being physically hyperactive, it’s about having a “hyperactive central nervous system” because it’s a form of inheritable dysautonomia. The problem with disautonomia, especially the ADHD kind, is that it makes boredom flag to your nervous system as a THREAT, triggering hyperactive and maladaptive central nervous system processes like fight or flight.

But dysautonomia kills you that way. Literally, part of the reason our average life spand increase on stimulents is that it helps manage risk-taking impulsivity that can get us killed by accident, but the other part is that stimulents can regulate a hyperactive CNS such that it is functionally (while impacted by the stimulent) NOT dysregulated anymore. And PHYSIOLOGICALLY that is essential because the physical outcomes of dysautonomia can reduce your life span by YEARS if not decades through self-perpetuating hypervigelence, endocrine disruption, and adrenal fatigue.

So when the ADHD brain goes stimulation-seeking and a doctor tells you to practice mindfulness, it feels like being told “hey go stand in a functioning boiler until you can stop thinking” rather than WHAT IT IS which is the process of re-teaching your body what is and isn’t safe.

Standing outside making mindful, non-interpretive/moralized observation of the world helps your brain and body re-acclimate to the idea that absence of that frantic “busy” feeling isn’t a threat or a risk to your safety, and gradually reduces the level of distress that just hanging out somewhere triggers for you.

Learning WHY this stuff was being suggested and understanding what it was actually supposed to do went a long way towards changing my relationship with my ADHD. I am FAR more functional now, far less prone to shame spirals and rejection sensitivity, hell, I can **sit physically still for near on an hour at a time** now without feeling like I’m going to crawl out of my skin.

So yeah. Go outside. Let the world narrow around you and take deep breaths until it stops feeling claustrophobic or like you need to climb walls. Learn how to let little sensations become big ones like the way the heat of the sun on your skin starts as a gentle warming and be omes a unique collection of sensory moments depending on how it lands on you. Listen for sounds under sounds and let them fade in and out as you move your focus from one sound to the next. Enjoy. Move on. Rinse and repeat.

When you no longer feel like the world is actively killing you, it’s a lot easier to navigate it.

People love to say things like “Hiding Anne Frank was illegal, turning her in would have been legal” without like fully grasping the modern implications properly. You have tons of folks like “if WW2 happened today id have __” that do not realize what is happening around them.

We have this idolized AND sanitized version of what happened then, and so we do not recognize it when it happens now.

Resistance fighters assassinated nazis and blew up weapons and infrastructure and destroyed records and forged paperwork and raised secret funds and smuggled people in vehicles and yes, hid them in their homes.

“Well it’s sad he got sent to an ICE camp but he faked his permit :/“

Whoever helped him fake his paperwork did what fighters in ww2 did. People who cut through chain link fences do what fighters in ww2 did, people who blow whistles chasing after ice cars do what fighters in ww2 did, people who destroy arms factories and cop city cranes do what fighters in ww2 did, people unmask agents do what fighters in ww2 did.

People are doing it now! They’ve been doing it now! You keep saying “oh if this happened here__” it HAS! It IS!

What are you doing about it?

As someone on the front lines of the court system, I’m confirming this. It’s easy to assume that people are being hyperbolic. They’re not. People in the courthouse for speeding tickets and child support are being strongarmed into locked rooms and arrested, loaded into vans under tents behind the courthouse, and they built a fence with netting over it to prevent reporters and court watchers from photographing faces.

One local jail contracted with ICE voluntarily. We were getting close to forcing them to actually follow the rules of ICE detainers and release people if ICE hadn’t come for them. That’s over now. If anyone gets bond on a pending criminal charge, they are arrested and deported without the chance to prove innocence or guilt.

Two of my clients were victims of severe domestic violence. Nearly all have dependent children. Some of the children are US citizens. There are no questions. No support. Give your kids to CPS — this is the only option.

You know undocumented people can get a driver’s license? They can file taxes and get a tax ID? Those, the ones who tried to obey the law, are being taken out one by one, because their names are in a database that they voluntarily joined. Because they want to be here. They want to be Americans.

The judge in a case of mine gave someone a two-day jail sentence. Gone. Case deferrals for dismissal are available for all Americans; if an undocumented person tries to take the same deal, they’re gone. A child client of mine had his father disappear to ICE. A woman had her husband disappear.

It’s now. Detainees kept in horrible conditions, unfed, unwashed, no lawyers, no doctors. It’s now. Shipped to countries where they’ve never been and left without papers. It’s now. It’s now. It’s happening now. It’s happening now.

in the contemporary world, the most fundamental human right - and, it often seems, the least protected one - is “being both Allowed and Able to go Somewhere Else.” the rest is commentary.

the torments of prison are predicated on Not Letting You Leave. the most terrifying and degrading aspects of childhood are predicated on Not Letting You Leave. misogynists wail and moan and fearmonger about divorce and equal opportunity employment because they Allow Wife To Leave. borders and immigration restrictions exist, in no small part, to Prevent People From Leaving countries where they will be exploited and/or oppressed. fuck you for trying to leave. fuck you for exerting any control over your life whatsoever. that makes you the one at fault, actually.

coworker today was talking about how she tries to drive less to reduce her carbon footprint, so instead of ordering takeout she orders delivery. when I pointed out that this actually results in the exact same amount of emissions because the same amount of driving happens she said “yeah but it’s not me driving.” and I feel like any critique of progressive individualism I could make based on this would fall flat because like. what else is there to say? she summed up the flaws of individualist environmentalism better than most critics could, without intending to.

okay well given the number of tags that seem to think the problem is how she’s calculating her personal carbon footprint and not the idea of a “personal carbon footprint” maybe I should have elaborated some
