むかしコンピュータがないとき、人の動きをどうやってシミュレーションしたかご存じだろうか？ 流体力学の世界なのだと思うが、いまなら1人1人をバーチャルに再現して、人工生命的にシミュレーションするなんてのもあるかもしれない。しかし、コンピュータを手軽に使えるようになるまでは、「豆」が使われたりしていた。 菓子箱のような適当な大きさの模型の中に壁やテーブルを作り、その中にたとえば大豆をジャーッと入れてやる。大豆の1粒を人間1人に見立てているわけだ。ここで、箱ごとユサユサと動かして、たとえばデパートなどの施設で火事が起こったときの人の行動をシミュレーションをするのである。 NHK教育テレビで、実際にこうした実験を紹介をしたのを見たこともあるが、大豆はぶつかりあい、出口に殺到して、押し合いへし合い、何個かは裏口を見つけてさっさと出ていったりする。豆の形のいびつさや相互作用が、人の動きを真似るのだろう

最近、iPad を使って電子書籍を読んでいる。iPad における電子書籍のシステムとしては、Apple の iBooks と Amazon の Kindle (キンドル) の 2 種類が有名である。いずれもインターネット上で書籍を電子的に購入しすぐにダウンロードすることができる。Kindle といっても、Amazon 製のハードウェアを買わなくても、iPhone または iPad があれば、Kindle アプリケーションをダウンロードして、そこで Amazon.com の Web サイト上で購入 (決済) した書籍をすぐにダウンロードして表示できる。 電子書籍がこのように利用可能になるまでは、日本では、洋書を購入したいと思っても、書店にはなかなか置いておらず、Amazon で注文すると米国から取り寄せるので数日間かかっていたが、これが瞬時に購入できるようになったというのは大変便利である。し
