米VMware, Inc.は6日（現地時間）、仮想PC作成・実行ソフト“VMware”シリーズのサーバー版「VMware Server」のBeta版を無償公開した。同社によると正式版も無償で公開される予定とのこと。現在、同社のホームページからダウンロードできる。また、本ソフトの対応OSはWindows 2000 Server/Sever 2003だが、動作保証外ながらWindows XP上でも動作する模様。 なおダウンロード時には、無料のアカウント登録が必要。また現在20時10分時点では、登録フォーム内で米国やカナダ在住者向けに用意されている、居住州を選ぶ“State/Province”選択欄で項目を選択しないとエラーが発生するため、米国やカナダ以外からの登録でも仮にいずれかの項目を選択する必要があるようだ。 「VMware Server」は、1つのPCで実行したソフト上に仮想的なPCを作

Parallels,Inc.がIntel Mac用の仮想マシンソフト、Parallels Workstation 2.1 Betaを公開している。 早速Windows 2000をインストールしてみた。通常の使用であれば動作速度は問題ないレベルだろう。サウンドやUSBは設定項目に見当たらず、メニューでも不活性なので未サポートのようだ（ベータ版なので今後サポートされる可能性はある）。なお、Parallels WorkstationはIntelのCPU仮想化技術VT-xをサポートしている。 Boot CampによりWindowsとMac OS Xのデュアルブートが可能になったが、仮想マシンは若干性能は劣るものの複数OSを同時に使用できるというメリットがある。デュアルブートと仮想マシンのどちらが優れているという話ではなく、目的に応じて使い分けるべきだ。
