    Ashes Remain Ashes Remain
Path evokes Lumsk's deeply underrated Åsmund frægdegjevar and October Falls. It's beautiful, fragile and features a sinister undertone. The use of harmonic minor in its compositions and the folk instrumentation help to differentiate Vvilderness from the trends in atmospheric metal. A fragile record with a sense of foreboding that shouldn't be overlooked.
  16. Visions of Infinihility
    by Carnosus
Towards Infinihilistic Purity Towards Infinihilistic Purity
Absolutely scalding death metal. Hard to imagine this isn't a Top 5 album for 2023.
  17. Reue
    by Leipa
    Schlaf Schlaf
Reue deftly avoids so many of the tropes of the modern black metal scene and delivers something special. The record cuts a unique path through the depressive black metal jungle with aggressive riffing and production which is on the attack. Yet, despite being free of the bed of reverb endemic to anything ‘depressive,’ Reue exquisitely evokes the existential angst of remorse. Record o' the Month for January over at AngryMetalGuy.com.

    The Honor The Honor
An idiosyncratic little album from Crimfall's founder. The blend of sounds is fully cinematic and every song has its own character. You own nothing that sounds quite like it.
  19. The Saberlight Chronicles
    by Fellowship
    Atlas Atlas
The Saberlight Chronicles is like someone took the Platonic ideal form of power metal, melted it down and burned it to CD. As an added bonus, The Saberlight Chronicles has surprisingly well-crafted lyrics in a genre that's broadly marred with utter pablum. You can’t feel sad when you’re listening to Fellowship and you won’t get “Until the Fire Dies” out of your head ever again.
