I have been returning to this for over a decade. Never gets old. Magnificent use of riffs and phrases from the games all blended into the timeless ‘80s cartoon theme song. Well done.
  6. RAYMAN BY REMI LIVE PROJECT
    by Rémi Gazel / Ubisoft
RAYMAN 1 - THE MAGICIAN LIVE RAYMAN 1 - THE MAGICIAN LIVE
Oh man, Rémi! You are sorely missed. We were running our Kickstarters—his for this, mine for the PPSTZ soundtrack, both unsuccessful—at the same time. I was so hoping to hear this whole album and to have it on vinyl.

What a poetic thing to do at the unexpected close of a life. I'm so glad we got these snippets; they are much cherished.

(Mr. Dark's music still gets me tense, even as an adult)
  7. Presents Sister Gertrude Morgan
    by King Britt
Live Like Jesus Live Like Jesus
What a fascinating experiment. So glad to be able to have this on vinyl. It's really hard to put the experience into words, and that's reflected in the sparse, 2005, spoken-word interludes which offer tiny snippets of commentary torn away from context.

This album is an experience. It is not gospel, it is not poetry, it might not even be music as you know it. But I'm glad I've heard it, I'm glad she recorded it, I'm glad King Britt added to it, and I want to keep hearing it.

King Dedede (from "Dedede’s Drum Dash Deluxe") (Lo-Fi Edit) King Dedede (from "Dedede’s Drum Dash Deluxe") (Lo-Fi Edit)
VGM lofi is such a cynical space. Lofi, at its most basic, is extremely easy to produce, and with VGM as the basis, it’s very easy to find an audience. Further, as background noise, that audience is usually undiscerning, so there’s a ton of aural “shovelware.”

This is not that. This shit is excellent. The Dedede arrangement is so good it will make you sit up in your chair and say “holy god what am I hearing.” I have that reaction every single time I play it.

    Also the vinyl is STUNNING.
  9. Video Game LoFi: Super Mario 64
    by Save Point & 88bit
Koopa's Road (from "Super Mario 64") Koopa's Road (from "Super Mario 64")
So incredible that it feels like the Final Word on the SM64 score. The great finale to all our memories of it.

Just brilliant. There isn’t a weak arrangement here. Buy the vinyl, it’s pearlescent and gorgeous.

Picking a favorite track is absolutely impossible.
  10. Video Game LoFi: Pokémon
    by Save Point, Besso0
Pokémon Theme (from "Pokémon Red & Blue") [Lo-Fi Edit] Pokémon Theme (from "Pokémon Red & Blue") [Lo-Fi Edit]
Genius always seems obvious in hindsight. So much so that genius might be defined as “that which leads the discovery of the inevitable.”

The “gotta catch ‘em all” sample in the background of the opening track—that, my friends, is genius. Absolutely fucking brilliant. Can’t believe no one found that there before.

Another home run, and another gorgeous vinyl record. Seriously, the product photos don’t do them any justice. They’re literally pearlescent.
  11. INSIGHT V
    by Julien Marchal
    Insight LIII Insight LIII
INSIGHT is my favorite album sequence of all time. I was eager for this fifth installment, but when it came, I was first disappointed. It took many, many listens to grow on me.

This seems to be Julien at his most relaxed and experimental. The vibe seems to be that he really doesn’t care whether we’ll like this one; if we don’t, there are four others to enjoy.

Titillation is wholly absent. This is confessional poetry meant for an audience of one: the author. I’m honored to be invited to listen.
  12. Zelda & Sleep 2
    by Super Piano 64
    Clock Town Clock Town
Man, this is such a lovely spread. I’m betting this was produced at almost the same time as the first volume, but this one seems to come together better. Gentle and skillful all around.

There’s also an excellent third volume, “Zelda & Sleep 3,” which is mostly BoTW/TotK, plus a little Twilight Princess, as well as the superb “Mario & Sleep,” a beautiful piano album based wholly on SM64. Unsure why those aren’t on Bandcamp, but you should check ‘em out.
  13. Zelda & Sleep
    by Super Piano 64
Song of Healing Song of Healing
If you’re listening to this, you’ve heard these tunes thousands of times in hundreds of variations. This album rides a wave which includes the swell of lofi beats and “sleep” albums “to study to,” and adds something special.

These are uncomplicated arrangements that use the piano the way it is best employed: with clarity, and without stepping on itself.

I just wish it was played on a real piano. The “unreal” nature of the keyboard is obvious at several points, and detracts from the intimacy.
  14. Zelda & Jazz III
    by The Deku Trio
The Lost Woods The Lost Woods
Truthfully, I haven't played BoTW/ToTK, so I don't have commentary on this album as adaptation. However—

I bought it on vinyl immediately because I find what these guys are doing extremely impressive. Listening through, they haven't lost a single step from Z&J2, and all of a sudden there's this wild experiment in The Lost Woods with atmospheric sounds and a whole different feel. Loved that.
  15. Zelda & Jazz II
    by The Deku Trio
The Legendary Hero The Legendary Hero
These guys are truly at home in both jazz and these “standards” from Hyrule. They make the tunes sound totally native to both worlds, and that’s no small achievement. From the featherlight touch on the piano, to the easygoing confidence of the snare drum brushes, to every subtle trill and flourish of the bass, this is something truly special. Thank the golden goddesses they’re also pressing to vinyl.

Choosing a favorite track is really hard.
  16. Zelda & Jazz
    by The Deku Trio
    Lost Woods Lost Woods
These arrangements far surpassed my expectations. I’m impressed at the sheer mileage we continue to get out of Zelda’s music, and that I haven’t heard something quite like this before. It’s recorded beautifully and intimately, the tracklist flows well, and the length felt perfect for a debut. And thank you for pressing it to vinyl!
  17. Retrospective
    by Jacob David
    Skagerrak Skagerrak
Got the sheet music book with vinyl record. Beautiful presentation, especially the book. I appreciated the touching intro from the composer, thank you.

This is a well-chosen selection of some of Jacob’s best pieces, all relatively simple and easy to play, representing a (narrow) range of moods. All contemplative, all played gracefully. “Judith” is one of my favorite piano pieces ever, and seeing it chosen as the opener of this collection I like to imagine it’s one of which Jacob is most proud.
  18. The Shoe Factory
    by Oliver Patrice Weder
Home At Last Home At Last
Eerie, warm, mysterious, and masterful. Rewards repeated listenings with richly layered instruments and mastering. Lilts through melancholy and simmering brass until resting feather-light on the finale in "True Heroes."
  19. Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse
    by Jared Emerson-Johnson
Flint Paper: Private Investigator Flint Paper: Private Investigator
Mr. Emerson-Johnson, I owe you an apology. I wasn't really familiar with your game.

What a towering achievement. This album might be your masterpiece, and is the greatest aural tribute to the Freelance Police ever conceived. Bravo.

I deeply, sincerely hope the bookends recorded with the narrator get to one day be used on a licorice pizza. What a fantastic album!!
  20. Sam & Max: Beyond Time and Space
    by Jared Emerson-Johnson
    Arctic Hush Arctic Hush
It's so massive. If this is all the music that made it into the game (and it is; this is a wonderful, generous, well-curated soundtrack release, thank you so much guys), how much was left on the cutting room floor??

So much great stuff here. All of it is so fun and is more focused and mature than the sneeze-like spread of the former album. Honorable mentions to the epic drama of the new opener "Maimtron 9000[...]", "Fugue and Dies Irae," and "T-H-E-M."

    Would LOVE a vinyl, Jared!!
