  1. The Loss
    by Mares Of Thrace
The Fifth Stage: Depression The Fifth Stage: Depression
The tracks are charged with a jarring and lumbering intensity, the riffs do not rely on simple heaviness for impact. They have an almost loose quality to them, their blend of dark rock ‘n roll adding an interesting edge to proceedings. Similarly, the drums follow an uncomplicated path. Sat just right in the mix, they undertake the perfect supporting role. Operating just under the fuzzy haze of the strings they are a solid foundation for the bashing bleakness of The Loss.
  2. BEAUTIFUL GLORIOUS DEATH THROES (FULL LENGTH)
    by DRAPE
Lifeless and Corpsed Lifeless and Corpsed
Tracks such as ‘Lifeless and Corpsed’ are tormenting little numbers to contend with. The drums labour just enough to make you wonder if they are going to bother or not at times, whilst the guitar just continues to grind out that tremolo riff, occasionally allowing it to soar a shade higher to truly herald the growth of the track. But in the main, Beautiful Glorious Death Throes is a success largely because of its steadfastness. The album does exactly what it says on the tin.
  3. Thorn Bringer
    by Khaos Aura
An Empire of Unlight An Empire of Unlight
As frenzied as it can be, there is also a sense of how well placed some of the blows are. Equally at home in nicking the skin of the listener as they are in slicing through flesh, Khaos Aura are a calculating pair Thorn Bringer possesses a real venom to it. But instead of just relying on its bite to placate its victims, it is just as at ease coiling and slithering around limbs and into orifices to maximise the potential of its threat.
  4. To the Great Unbearing North
    by Axis of Light
  5. The Cursed Oak
    by Kveldstimer
    Tranquil Attunement Tranquil Attunement
The synths are deployed effectively on all the tracks here and the album would be at a loss without them for me. Providing a real supporting role as opposed to dominating proceedings, they swell tracks with a richness, and within the swirling chaos that they help develop, I sense them growing, filling all available space behind those prominent guitars.
  6. The triumph of malignant narcissism
    by Altar of Woe
Bound to darkness Bound to darkness
Despite the theme of frantic black metal that is present here, there is also a sense of tracks being carefully selected and I cannot call out any bad tracks in all honesty. I sense a calculated nature to the arrangement as the album only seems to grow in stature as it rumbles along.
  7. Celestial Shrine

  8. Il était une forêt...
    by Gris
Il était une forêt... Il était une forêt...
On a real exploration of Canadian BM and of course I soon hit this record. So bleak and desolate, an absolute essential release. Had to get the vinyl.
  9. Menschenmühle
    by Kanonenfieber
    Grabenkampf Grabenkampf
They reflect the controlled chaos of war in their song writing and structures. The superb pace change in Grabenlieder where they use gunfire to bring in the death metal part of the song is superbly timed. They even have some sense of melo-death to Grabenkampf as it plays out from within an almost doom style structure.

Thy Flesh Consumed Thy Flesh Consumed
What a find this was. Imagine the technical presence of Ulcerate delivered with the attitude of Wormrot and you're getting close.
  15. Stalking The Ghost
    by Unearthly Trance
Dream State Arsenal Dream State Arsenal
A resonating reminder of why a world without Unearthly Trance is a bad place. Great artwork to (on the vinyl version it truly comes into its own) accompany the great music.
  16. Aphotic Womb
    by Sinmara
There's layers galore here. Thin veils of dirty flesh laid atop of each other inviting you to slowly strip them away and find the dark treasures of the flesh beneath.
  17. Of Despair and Self-Destruction
    by Insanity Cult
Prologue - The Light That Drowned Itself Prologue - The Light That Drowned Itself
The whole album just falls into place, track after track. Unexpected as to how much I actually play this completely blind purchase. Proof that blind purchases work!
  18. Nothing Is Free
    by JK FLESH
Nothing Is Free Nothing Is Free
Just the gritty and dirty industrial noise you'd expect from Justin. The death march to a thousand council estate funerals.
  19. Tam, Gdzie Miesiąc Opłakuje Świt...
    by Wędrujący Wiatr
Tam, Gdzie Miesiąc Opłakuje Świt... Tam, Gdzie Miesiąc Opłakuje Świt...
Close your eyes when listen to this and soon you'll be there, in that cover, gazing through the hazy darkness of that forest at night. The music will be all you need to understand the vastness and depth of your surroundings.
  20. In Terra Profugus
    by Carpe Noctem
    Metamorphoses Maleficarum Metamorphoses Maleficarum
Can only liken them to a blackened and slightly more melodic version of Grave Miasma, with a substantial lashing of atmosphere on the side. Iceland has a strong reputation for decent BM and this doesn't disappoint.
