ilya constantly jealousybaiting shane is one of my top five favorite things about him, especially before he finally cracks & tells shane that he loves him . he’s like a big fluffy cat showing you his belly like :) so soft :) i kiss you so gentle & tease you & look after you :) & then shane reaches for the belly with fascinated reluctance & ilya goes SCRATCH >:3 what if i greencard marry my old friend i used to fuck more often than you >:3 & shane’s eyes go so wet & shiny & his jaw is clenched . & some raw, young part of ilya heaves a big sigh of relief to know that even if he can’t make shane love him, at least he can affect him . & then as soon as he learns that shane has turned the precise, devoted attention that makes him a legendary hockey player onto ilya he has that flash of holy shit . he is going to love me forever in a way that no one but my mother has ever loved me & i am never going to be the same . & every ounce of tension in his body just evaporates & he melts into a puddle under shane’s hands .

ilya rozanov was never allowed to speak around his father—he was raised to be seen, not heard, a financial asset and nothing more. he’s 19, in a new country, carrying his family’s double lives on his back, and the MHL is absolute trash for not providing an interpreter. they literally set him up to fail because the rivalry sells more than a friendship.
and then there’s shane. our socially awkward baby dealing with the weight of being the "future" for every asian kid who dreams of pro hockey. he has to be the perfect, polite golden boy to be respected, while ilya is pigeonholed as the "partying bad boy." they’re both being used as tropes while they’re just two isolated kids trying to survive the pressure of living up to the world's expectations
so ilya is sitting there drowning, masking his panic with faux-bravado, and then the STUTTER.
the normally chirping asshole phenom stutters, and in two seconds flat, shane helps. BUT THE FACT THAT SHANE ASKS FIRST?? he doesn't steamroll ilya; he looks at him and asks if it’s okay to speak for him. it’s the first time someone has offered ilya a hand instead of a leash. i am physically SOFT.
and that is what the whole story is kind of about, to me at least. Learning to let yourself have what you want, even if that might piss some people off, because, they don't owe anything to anyone - despite what others may want them to believe. and they deserve to be happy and they never truly can be if they're always trying to live up to the expectations of the world

hudson saying closeted professional athletes have reached out to him and the cast and rachel reid about the show is so fucking heartbreaking. it’s amazing for like five seconds, and then it’s incredibly sad.
