It’s actually kind of striking how rapidly the ads on ostensibly respectable platforms have changed in the last 12–18 months. I’ve been getting penis enlargement scams and pyramid schemes that don’t even bother to pretend to be otherwise on YouTube – it’s like every platform is now running the kinds of ads that even three years ago would have been restricted to porn sites, and I’m not gonna lie, the fact that everyone seems to be getting desperate all at once ain’t an encouraging sign!

I just saw full frontal erect penis on a weather app. It’s not the sign of the impending tech-bubble implosion I expected, but apparently it’s the sign we’re getting.

“You know those are based on your browsing history” no, you don’t get it: I tried obfuscating my identity on YouTube with a burner freemail account on a public terminal and actually got more boner pill ads. Boner pill ads appear to be the default experience when they don’t know your demographic.

mold pisses me off so much

oh you have to eat your produce the moment it leaves the store or the fuckin Hungering Dust will get it. and. poison your food

I ran into this post years ago and to be honest, it has completely reoriented the way I engage with food.

Like. I’ve always sorta understood that things grow moldy or stale or sour or such if left out, but I never really internalized it in a meaningful way.

    But now I’m just like.

Yeah. The hungering dust. There exists omnivorous dust in the air that will eat my food if I don’t.

Those bagels have been sitting there for a week. Are we going to eat them soon or are we leaving them for the hungering dust?

Pizza’s been sitting out on the counter for an hour. Everyone’s enjoying the pizza, but if we don’t want “everyone” to include the hungering dust then we should probably put it away soon.

That’s just. That’s how food works to me now. There exists an invisible predator in the air that hungers for your yummies, and it will not hesitate to eat your food if you don’t make the effort to protect and preserve it. And eat what can’t be preserved before the dust can.

    Life-changing.

my unpopular opinion is that i hate tiktok because now people just publicly watch loud ass videos in public spaces with no regard for anyone else. 100% it was not this bad with youtube, it’s such a different thing with tiktok. put on headphones. you are grown.

    Girl……

This is it! This is what social media/smart tech have done! They’ve rotted away any distinction between private and public.

Yes, we do have the right to make demands on public behavior. Of course we do. Have you never heard of laws and etiquette? I’m not allowed to grocery shop naked. You can’t rummage through my purse. I can’t have a work meeting in the middle of a movie theatre.

I remember when it was taboo simply to answer your cell phone in public. The person answering would apologize and try to go to a more private area. Then public calls were normalized. Then putting people on speaker. Then listening to music without headphones. Do you know how many times I have hiked up a mountain or driven to the beach, only to be met with someone blaring shitty top 40 music from their portable speaker, because Heaven forbid you go one hour without noise?

Old woman yells at cloud and all that, but I can’t believe someone is not only admitting this behavior, but saying it’s a good thing! No one likes you! You’re a menace!

Almost. Years ago my computer suddenly stopped working and lost everything on it. Fortunately a relatively recent backup still existed bc of my family, a recent parts switch, and dumb luck. But last year a friend of mine got hacked and lost close to everything he had done creatively in the last 17-ish years. Art. Novels in progress. Entire conlangs. DnD character Sheets. Music he had made. All gone. He never backed any of it up. Few months later I started this habit (or ritual, almost) of drawing a reminder beast any time I would make a full complete backup. In hopes that seeing these things might remind others and myself. (Another factor here is that I am an animator and some of the stuff on my computer took literal years to make. And the film university I go to urges us to take this stuff seriously, too.)

There’s an old saying in the computer world.

    • There are two kinds of people
    • Those who have lost everything because of a drive failure
    • And those that are GOING TO lose everything because of a drive failure

That is why you back up your stuff. It isn’t if, it’s when. If it isn’t drive failure, it’s going to be malware, or ransomeware, or a battery that fails and destroys your laptop, or a lightning strike that destroys your system, or a house fire/flood/earthquake, or simple theft of your device, the list is as long as your arm. Someday you WILL have a problem that eats all of your data. Then the only thing that will save your a** will be backups. Personally I have three levels; TimeMachine, back up to the cloud, and a drive that I back everything up to once a month and keep in the fireproof safe.

    Back up your stuff.

(That includes your phone and tablet too)

Breaking: TikTok is better bc it’s more hostile towards humanity

The lack of video content is what kept us here… I thought we all agree that the best feature of this hellhole was and always will be anonymity.

Tumblr’s not asking for my phone number. It’s not going through my contacts to try and connect me with my fucking colleagues. I can come here and talk about whatever I want without anyone ever seeing my face or hearing my voice. I don’t have to censor myself and hide my interests or enthusiasm out of fear of consequences it might have in my real life.

I think the biggest misunderstanding they have of Tumblr is that they think of it as a social media platform when in actuality it’s a blogging platform with social features.

I like the use of Metroman here because if there’s one thing Tumblr users collectively agree on it’s that we want everyone to think we’re dead

    😔

one thing i am quite grateful to Brian David Gilbert for is the phrase “If you needed ME to tell you that… I’m glad I told you that.”

it has been etched into my brain for the past six years, fundamentally altering how i consider knowledge gaps held by others, as well as myself. people usually need to be told stuff before they can know it! that’s how knowing stuff works! this is an extreme example played for laughs but it’s a legitimately helpful philosophy!!
