I still remember the last time I saw his. It was way too early in the morning. The sky outside was pitch black, the air cold and bitter. It felt like no one was up but us.

Jake’s hands were warm against my face as he held onto me tightly. Our kiss lasted for as long as it possibly could, neither of us wanting to step out of this moment. He held me close and I could tell he didn’t want to let me go.

Eventually we had to say goodbye. He said what he always did. He reassured me.

I’ll be back. I always am, honey. Take care of sweetpea. Take care of yourself. This’ll all be over before we know it. When I get back, we’re going on a trip. Start thinkin’ of places, anywhere you want to go we’ll visit. I promise I’ll call and write as often as I can.

The alarm goes off while the apartment is still dark and quiet, and for a few seconds I let myself pretend I can stay there. I just breathe. Just exist without needing anything from myself. There’s a peaceful quiet in the air, one that always ends too quickly. The issue I have with writers doing a "plus-size reader being insecure, so sex is the solution" trope is that it just sexualizes us. Insecurity can also stem from sexualization, just like it can from rejection. Plus-size people face objectification every day, and you're a part of it. It's also so unrealistic; if I'm feeling insecure about my body, the last thing I'd want is someone groping my naked body. Imagine if you were really thirsty and instead of someone giving water, they spit in your face and say, "Well, it's a liquid." That's what y'all are doing with those fic tropes. You're saying, "Oh, you have insecurities? Here's a fic about you getting your puss ate." Also, 99% of these authors who write plus-size characters like that are not plus-size themselves. So, instead of doing research or even talking to a bigger person, they write a crappy, half-assed fic that they think is so different. They praise themselves like they're fucking Liberace. I can give you a quick outline of these fics.

You're like everyone else who treats us like we are not more than our bodies, you're just doing it in a performative way. You're not different, nothing you're doing is new, and if I'm being honest every insecurity->sex fic I've seen has been fucking trash.

Instead of developing the character in ways that would reassure the reader (in this case, a plus-size woman) that she feels safe with the character, the writers fail to create a safe space where the reader feels secure and the character promises protection. However, the only solution the writers offer is sex, objectifying the body and believing that's acceptable when it's not.

I can speak from my own perspective. I'm a short woman with a body that doesn't attract attention, and when I read something that revolves around the idea that "the reader's insecurities are solved with sex," it makes me uncomfortable, like I'm just an object for someone. I don't identify with it at all. In the end, those fanfics are just like a bunch of other nonsense.

Sometimes I just want to read stories where the reader is assured that she is in a safe place, can be calm, express herself freely, and is reminded and shown that she is safe with the character time and time again, not where insecurities are magically fixed with sex.

This is so real. I don’t hate smut, but i get tired of seeing it 24/7. I just want some substance sometimes.

Emotional intimacy is a real and powerful thing. I feel like smut can mean so much more when it’s combined with more backstory/character history.

In my eyes, when you really know someone (the angst/fluff/comfort, etc) and develop a little bit of history between the characters, you’re making the smut scene much more powerful. It shows that this isn’t some fling that doesn’t mean anything. It shows that these characters feel a deeper connection to each other. They know each other and still choose each other regardless of their flaws and imperfections. There’s something keeping stronger than lust motivating them to keep interacting.

That’s powerful to me. The romantic tension of it all.


But, maybe I’m just too much of a romantic.
