I’m sure most people have seen the news about what happened here in MN yesterday - if you haven’t, MPR is probably your most accessible source for what’s going on, and also be very careful, there’s a video of a straight-up murder going around out there - which puts my personal first of the year mental health nonsense … well, let’s say “into perspective,” though that’s not quite what I’m going for. So I’m going to try to do more happy and weird nonsense around here today for an escape, while continuing to figure out what the fuck to do in real life. But I will tell you to be on the lookout for scammers - I’ve been seeing a “vetted” gofundme link passed around, but until I see some recognizable, legitimate source (like MPR or another trusted local source), my forever advice about GFM is “unless you personally know the person running it or can get someone you personally trust to vouch for it in some other way than ‘I saw it on the internet,’ DO NOT GIVE MONEY.” Maybe it is real, but somehow I do not think this woman’s family and friends spent their time last night, hours after her death, setting up a gofundme and shilling for it on the internet. If I’m wrong, I’ll happy throw a bit their way, but not until I see something besides “this random Instagram that totally knows how to vet people said it was okay.”
If you have money to spare and want to contribute something to those working in MN right now, please send it to something like one of the organizations below. It will probably get worse before it gets better, and these are the people who are organizing the kind of information and resources to help the people who may not have people filming and observing them when ICE comes to call, and/or protecting the most vulnerable local communities.
Hopping on to this, because there will be a lot of misinformation coming from “official” sources. The FBI has shut local authorities out of the investigation, and it goes without saying that I expect them to cover up the crime and smear the victim.
She was there as a legal observer. I took the legal observer training last month, and one thing the trainers reiterate, is that we are there as nonviolent upstanders, to not bring anything that is a weapon or could even be perceived as a weapon. We are told that we are not there to aggravate or interfere, “legal witnessing is not protesting.”
The training I took was via Monarca , as part of a joint project with Unidos MN (linked in the original post). If you live in Minnesota or Wisconsin, Monarca still has a couple of open training sessions this month (the one I went to had a thousand participants, the local response has been heartening to see).
