  • I don’t think I can fully put into words, just how happy I am that Jacob altered the relationship between Ilya and Svetlana.

    1. He managed to do it so that it in no way impacted Shane and Ilya’s relationship, timeline or feelings.

    2. Provided Ilya an outlet for emotions that is not just his own brain catastrophizing. Or at the very least, someone who can call him on his shit and/or keep an eye on his emotional well being.

    3. She knows his family dynamics, something that we don’t see anyone but Shane (and his parents in some capacity) know in books. And not only does she know, she was there! She knows Alexei is a fucking asshole, how their father treated them, and what happened to his mother.

    4. Svetlana being a childhood friend puts someone already in Ilya’s corner in season 2! Someone who knows, that isn’t just through Shane. Someone all his own to talk to openly, and in Russian, about things occurring in real time and not just after the fact. Someone outside a clinical setting.

    Anyway, I love Jacob Tierney and his insanely giant genius brain.

  • When Ilya praises Shane, he jokes about the obvious and is sincere about the not-obvious. He says Shane skates slow and has a weak backhand—both of which are false. Shane is the fastest skater with a wicked backhand in canon; and he says Shane has beautiful freckles, and he's direct about this because he knows Shane doesn't know Ilya finds Shane's freckles beautiful. He can't joke about that. I love that Ilya's so socially intelligent.
