If you read nothing else from the comics I can’t recommend The Beginning of The End enough, it’s got Space Fern. Look at his silly little finger tufts.

They’re my OTP because Fern/Fennel is a kind of eldritch presence that found themselves overly attached to their humans, so much so that they wind up making their own Finn/Fionna, but even that isn’t enough and they attempt to take their everything after separation drives them mad. I’m a big parasitic romance enjoyer, and parasite/host whose soul they share under an eternal curse is peak parasitic romance.

The differences in how I view them are far and few. Like I don’t think fionnel had the 3 buckets fight (at least not exactly) since nothing can match the pissing match stupidity of teen-boy-testosterone-brain (squared) but that’s about it. They’ve got the same shared brain cell dynamic canonically, nothing fundamental divides them to me. Fennel’s subconscious drive to be close to Fi because “for all eternity” means “all eternity” vs Fern’s curse turning him into Finn’s vault-keeper is a nice difference, I guess?

ik a lot of people want Fennel to be a fluke in Fionna’s line of Finn-analogous love interests but even vampworld bubbline can’t help themselves, so… Finn’s established to have messy feelings about Fern, it’s in character for Fionna to feel similarly– she just can’t remember why. (and that’s some good shit) taking finnfern out of fionnel is emptying it of everything that makes their bond compelling imo.

If I wanted to ship lady strangers w/ no history I’ve got Phoebe/Lizard Princess right there lol.

Not that engaging to me w/o a third tossed in since Hunter’s kind of a bowl of oatmeal: thick but boring. There’s not enough there for Fionna to play off of for me.

I don’t think Fern existed in that world, no. He’s like a worldly-anachronism even in Ooo; Fern’s a very complicated victim of circumstance and only exists through a really specific set of magic shenanigans, and Aaa-Fern/Fennel only exists by virtue of being a side character in Prismo’s fix-it-fic AU. Worlds that have never/rarely known magic have a 0.001% chance of being inhabited by a Fern in my brain, (even worlds with magic he’s an unlikely outcome) but upside, that means those Finns aren’t missing a hunk of their soul, so they’re less “emptied.” Fern might exist as whoever they were before being bound to the grass sword, but that’s so obscure and past anything the crew’d do, imo. “Finn no. 1” might also exist as like, a side effect of the crown?? Like Farnn’s just got an ego state made up of his mania, but again, obscure and not something I think we’d get into canonically.

edit: also, Farm Finn’s got the same arm/prosthetic set up as comic canon Finn (see below) and the grass demon stayed in Finn’s body in that timeline, so if there is any bit of Fern in that world that might be what’s up.
