A rant on the racism of the DC fandom

So, if you follow me, you will know that very recently I called out a post about certain undertones of casual racism (OP and I talked about it, and we both apologised, them for posting and me because I should've made a separate post to talk about these issues rather than attacking Op and their post). Thus, I decided to make this post.

Quick warning: This post we'll talk about different dark moments in the comics, from SA to child abuse, neglect and violence. If you are triggered by these subjects, please do not read. If you still want to read, proceed with caution.

Also, warning, this post is extremely long.

Can you people be normal about Arab people for ONCE IN YOUR FUCKING LIFE???

This is bordering on racist Arab propaganda caricatures like what the hell is this??? Tim Drake fans are the pest of the earth i genuinely cannot believe someone would think this is an okay thing to post as an Arab person im so sickened and disgusted.

Is it okay if I ask (with genuine concern and curiosity) what makes this feel like a racist caricature? Because I think this is a very important concern to acknowledge and address, and I'd like to avoid doing anything that lands that way in my own work, and also because I am struggling to understand.

Is the issue that the white character is dressing as an Arab character, or that the group that follows the Arab character is so easily fooled into following the white character? Or is it something else that I'm not perceiving because my experience hasn't exposed me to it yet?

Thank you for the question! Basically it’s an amalgamation of both. The way the art is composed, drawn from an angle that centres Tim (the white man) and situates in a position higher than the assassins, who to my knowledge are predominantly Arab or people of colour. The skewed idea born out of racist (if sadly canon) writing that Ra’s wants to rape Tim or “take over his body” when the only person Ra’s has ever been interested in implanting his soul into was Damian, his blood-related grandson. There’s a lot of eugenics themes going on there but that’s a topic for another day.

The simultaneous dumbing down of trained assassins whose job requires them to be smart and quick-witted while dehumanising them by drawing them with little detail, more shapes than actual humans. And then comes the continuation of this post which is just the nail in the fucking coffin

Yeah. I don’t think I need to go into just how dehumanising it is but I’ll do it anyways. This incredibly racist idea of Damian being treated like a pet to “keep” and extending that idea to trained assassins that are so loyal to Ra’s al Ghul they turned on his daughter (their new leader after he was dead for a brief while) as soon as they knew he was back.

“I found a stray cat can we keep it?” Rhetoric to actual real life competent and cherry picked humans to be the pinnacle of perfection at their craft is genuinely fucking insane. And even if they weren’t canonically and logically smart and competent, they are still people of colour and whether you mean to or not, this kind of dehumanisation IS racist and literally racist talking points. Even if it’s just a silly joke. Those fictional characters don’t give a fuck what you do with them but real actual humans do and we see the way you talk about people that look like us and come from our background.

The idea that they would be so stupid to think Tim was genuinely Ra’s Al Ghul despite him wearing a “shitty cheap costume” according to that posts tags. It just disgusts me to no end and frustrates me so fucking much because it’s just pure unadulterated bigotry almost on par on racist Arab propaganda caricatures treated as a silly joke. It’s not a silly joke and people should pay extra attention to the rhetoric they so mindlessly spew about a child of colour (Damian) and people of colour.

we need to have a term for when dc comics introduces a morally ambiguous/complex (or even heroic) woc and she gets turned into an irredeemably evil moustache twirling parody of herself. (Bonus round: already villainous woc loses any humanising or positive traits to become a irredeemable monster without any nuance)

examples

this can be contrasted to the treatment of white woman villains who tend to become more anti heroic/heroic over time and are given more positive traits. (E.g. catwoman (I know she’s now Latina but dc seemingly forgot and it became canon after her redemption), Harley Quinn, poison ivy, etc).

Like seriously compare the fandom perception/writing trends of Talia and Poison Ivy and tell me there’s no racist double standard there at all.

DC and many fans ignored/soft retconned all of poison ivy’s past rapey subtext (which is valid, she's better without it) but when they added it to Talia’s character in a very ooc decision and a lot of people took it as gospel and decided she can never redeem herself no matter how much it is retconned. They emphasise ivy’s (newer) eco activist status ( I love it, it makes her character much better) and pretend that Talia wasn’t always driven by a desire to save nature and wildlife.
