here's some angst for the day... imagine being in a relationship with robby. you can't have kids and you both agree you don't need to have kids the 'normal way' or even have any at all. but you know robby actually loves and really wants a kid. then you see him with the abandoned baby and the thought of depriving him of the chance of being a father kicks you in the gut.
so you avoid him and the baby. robby tries to get you to see the baby because she's just the cutest, but you can't bring yourself to do it. because she reminds you of what you can't have. can't do. can't give. it sounds monstrous, but you want to hate the baby.
until she's crying and no one is free enough to soothe her but you. so fine, you make your way over to her and try to get her to stop crying. she's physically fine, no fever, no hair tourniquets, just a perfectly good baby that no one wanted.
after a while, you pick her up in your arms, and slowly, she starts to settle. she looks up at you with her bright, innocent eyes, and you felt a twinge in your heart. how could someone abandon you?
unbeknownst to you, robby's watching you quietly, afraid that if he approaches you, you'll bolt. that's before he sees the tears in your eyes. then robby joins you, placing a gentle hand on your back. then robby hears you whisper, without looking away from the baby,
"can we adopt her?"
robby smiles gently, but sadly. because as much as he also wants to bring this baby jane doe home, unfortunately there is a process to it. you and robby need to be approved to be able to adopt or foster, and that alone can take months. by the time it happens, she'll likely already be with another family.
and so you spend however much time you have left with the baby and robby by your side. you might not be able to adopt her, but this certainly opens a door to another conversation you and robby will have.
