Love Garrus, but anyone saying he’s “ride or die” without context is slandering him and his story. =/

EVERY time Shepard runs into and recruits him, something bad has just happened that makes him willing to drop everything. He’s not signing up because he’s ride or die, he’s signing up because doing so is (to him) obviously the best option for his goals.

Saren investigation got blocked and Garrus is denied JUSTICE ON THE WRONG DOER ™? Oh look, a different Spectre also going after Saren. Better beg to go with them even though he only knows them by reputation!

His team and friends all were killed by the gangs they were fighting, the mission he spent over a year pursing is blowing up around his ears (metaphorically), and he’s about fifteen minutes from getting blown up too? And then DOES get blown up? Oh hey, someone is here to keep him alive and give him a new purpose. What’s he going to do, stay with the gangs trying to murder him?

His home planet (and the rest of the galaxy) is being besieged by Cuttlefish From Deep Space. He’s doing his best to live up to his Advisor On Stopping CFDS title, and it’s only slowing them down. And the Reigning Champion of “Stopping CFDS From Killing Us” shows up. Also, his boss just got promoted and is joining them. Why would he not go too?

Sure, liking and trusting Shepard as a person makes the choice easier and keeps him from looking for alternatives, but in every case things are royally fucked when Shep shows up with an empty slot in the Party Selection Screen. Hell, the only difference between his recruitment and Tali’s is that Tali always happens later in the games and there was ONE (1) time things weren’t royally fucked for her so she had to finish her job before joining.

Are we going to say that Wrex not abandoning his position as leader of this species to go running around with Shepard is a BAD thing? That Thane being deathly ill isn’t an excuse? That Miranda and Jack and Grunt and Mordin and everyone else having responsibilities and obligations that don’t center around You, The Player Character are flaws and not healthy character growth? I’m not fond of how it’s presented, but the VS saying “I don’t know what’s going on and I’m not disobeying orders until I do” on Horizon is a very reasonable stance when your dead friend shows up with a Space Nazi bumper sticker.

And yeah, Joker only leaves the Normandy when EDI goes with him (thus technically is still with the ship), and the only reason there even is an option to not have Chakwas in ME3 is because she can DIE in ME2. She also fills out all the paperwork ahead of time in order to join the SR2. THAT’S dedication.
