It took approximately three and a half long-strung heartbeats into watching Jadzia Dax--walking around the station with her pulled-in, hands-folded posture, stamping on the hideous frame of expected identity, tall spotted young "old man" woman alien, lifelong companion to strange grub-creature, freshly merged and arrived into substantive ironies--for me to decide this was exactly the character.

Not to ramble on personal terms, but I just love her: her in-on-the-joke-ness, her constant ponytail and big 90s barrettes, her spots (there should be more), her ironic distance, her ironic constitution, her easy vacillating between identities, her easy claim on multiple genders, her nodal sanguine-ness in the chaos of her person, her general sanguine-ness in everything around her, her conviction away from convention, her deep loyalty to the memories and people of her past lives, her friendship with Sisko, her bitterness about Lenara, her joke about "smart mushrooms," her joke about translating ancient text on a Bajoran stone being fraught, her height, her Terry Farrell-ness, her technobabble, her sometimes problematic ambition, her strength of will, her self-possession even in the face of past lives she has to hold in her that don't entirely respect her, the way she chose banishment for love, when she dressed up in Bajoran disguise to infiltrate the government with Kira, her several PhDs, her commitment to the grub and memories in her even when they're a burden, her piloting, her love of music and "collecting" of unknown composers, the fact that one of her past lives fucked dr. mccoy, the way Sisko said over her coffin "I miss my friend," her gestures to performance, her fundamentally noble person, her eschewing of the appropriate, her welcoming of gossip and particularities and muchness, the way she holds her hands behind her back because a past life developed the habit in order to rein in her passionate presentation, the way she is made of ironies and they're all productive.

I’m looking for that ‘I want a show about Space Captain Nog’ text post and I can’t find it so I’m just going to write my own! I Want A Show About Space Captain Nog, and here are some things I want that show to feature:

- the Federation trying to use Nog’s relationship with the new leader of Ferenginar for shady political purposes

- Jake Sisko, Ace Space Reporter, constantly hanging around to shamelessly utilize his friendship with his bff Nog to gain information and then blithely publish things that make Nog and the rest of Starfleet furious, and then they have a lot of arguments about journalistic ethics/sensationalist reporting/national security which Jake then puts verbatim into his Great (Terrible) Magnum Opus Novel and then forces Nog to read drafts of it, which makes Nog even MORE furious, rinse repeat

- Captain Nog’s first officer being a Vulcan guy with an awful, excruciating crush on Captain Nog due to his horrifying discovery that Ferengi economic logic is the hottest thing he’s every encountered

- all of Quark’s exes – including Cross-Dressing Ferengi Ex, Ruling Queen Klingon Ex, and Head of the Cardassian Resistance Ex – are somehow recurring guest stars and it’s the most embarrassing thing that Nog has to deal with, except for Jake Sisko, Ace Space Reporter, who is somehow even MORE embarrassing

- probably there are more things this show should have but these are the things that I dream of most

my reading of Wake Up Dead Man is that Benoit Blanc's mother has recently died and his approach to the entire investigation is informed by this

butch-king-frankenstein

  • when introducing himself to Father Jud, Blanc says "my mother is—was very religious" which is not a slip you make if your mother has been dead for a long time (compare to Knives Out where he says "my father was a police detective" with no hesitation)
  • his litany against Christianity in that same scene feels very personal, which could be for any number of reasons, but I think the line I mentioned in the previous bullet point is meant to provide context for it; he's expressing anger towards his mother and her loyalty to the church during her lifetime
  • similarly, when Blanc has his "road to Damascus" moment and his speech about giving grace to those who deserve it the least but need it the most, he's not really (or at least not only) talking about Martha; he's realized that he needs to find forgiveness and grace for his mother as well
  • Blanc's mother being dead would make him a thematic parallel to Monsignor Wicks, whose own unresolved trauma with his deceased mother informs his hyper-religious worldview (which stands in opposition to Blanc's hyper-rationalist one)
  • it also seems very intentional that when Father Jud prays for Louise, it's because her mother is dying and she doesn't want their last words exchanged to be in anger

I think I'm really onto something here

"blue in the face" existing as both cardassian and human idioms in star trek, but in cardassia it means basically 'aroused beyond measure'. Because of their skin becoming blue with more blood flow (as is common headcanon).

shoegazy-pie

And “Blue language/comedy” being both a Cardassian and human phrase with the same meaning in both languages (lewd and vulgar)

walkingstackofbooks

"Blue-collar jobs" in reference to courtesans and the stereotype that their "uniform" is a thick layer of blue makeup over their neckridges, and little else.

(I can't imagine a Cardassia that's particularly kind towards sex workers, unfortunately...)
