It's interesting to think about the intersection of these two facts:

  1. Films reflect the time period in which they were made.
  2. Our most popular films right now are all reboots, sequels, and reused IPs.

On one hand, you could make the case that our generation is being deprived of its place on cultural timeline, because (as far as the mainstream goes) all we're being given is rehashed ideas from other time periods. Seems rather boring to analyze.

But on the other hand, I think future film historians will find that this era is culturally fascinating. Not because of the "nostalgia bait" itself, but because it represents the emergence of independent cinema and streaming.

When TV was invented, people could watch filmed media at home. You no longer had to go to a theatre just to watch cartoons or comedies.

So the studios responded with a wave of epics in the 1950s. They said "Okay, you can get Dick Van Dyke at home, but you can't get Ben-Hur." Television couldn't compete with the budget, big name stars, or visual tech that film studios could offer. They were financially incentivized to blow your socks off with visuals and big name stars.

But with the emergence of streaming and independent film, that's no longer the case. A-listers are happy to take TV roles, and TV offers Hollywood-level visuals. You don't need to mess with the theatre system at all. It's easier than ever to make good-looking movies and share them with the masses with no major studio backing.

So what's the one thing that studios still have going for them? What's the one thing that Disney can give you that an independent filmmaker can't? Yoda. The Little Mermaid. Iron Man. Fucking brands. That's all they have, so that's all they sell.

We aren't being sold reboot after reboot because it's what the people want to see, or because our current culture is somehow more boring and lifeless than ever before. It's because it's the last stranglehold that these soulless studios have over the industry. They will shove your own childhood down your throat because their domination over previous generations is the one thing they have left to sell to this one.

there's a secret good sequel series that lives only in brain where finn and rey are force-sensitive foils to each other and they still spend movie #2 entirely apart but it's because they're exploring parallel and at time opposite relationships with the force and their place in the universe

and in my secret good version. okay hear me out. the han-leia kid is a hot lady. okay. are we following. and she DOES abandon luke's new jedi, not by falling and murdering people, but by stealing the millennium falcon and running off to escape responsibility and swaggers around with incredible han solo "loser pretending to be cool" energy. and then. she accidentally picks up two force sensitive teens on jakku and she's like. are you KIDDING me

listen my OC would be so good. she's introduced in like a space bar and you're just like "oh okay, the han solo character is a lady in this movie, okay"

but THEN some sort of shit hits the fan and you get that sexy, sexy lightsaber reveal. DO YOU SEE MY VISION

I finished these screenshot studies yesterday and posted them on insta, twitter and bluesky (forgot to post here woops), before watching Vol 2.

I have MANY thoughts about Vol 2. TLDR, I still have faith in Byler, but holy shit. The writers are making some VERY QUESTIONABLE decisions. But, it's not over till it's over. We should really wait until the finale (which I'll be seeing in a theatre on Jan 1st, woo) to fully react. But, I am PISSED at the "he was my Tammy" line. What in the legitimate fuckery. I am banking on the fact that Will has been an unreliable narrator, and that we've not had Mike's POV yet.

Even if the ending is as bad as Voltron or GOTs, we'll still have the fandom <3

There was no magic with Jane Ives. There was no magic with the abuse, trauma & torture that real-life children endured in MKUltra.

Eleven was an inspiration for abuse victims, bullying survivors & misfits. She was a powerful character given the misogynist shaft.

I will never get over what they did to Max and El‘s friendship.

Season 3 showed beautifully how much they needed each other. They were the most carefree we saw them throughout the whole show in their moments together. Their friendship was uplifting and beautiful and healing for two girls who clearly lacked a lot of love and support in their life.

In season 4, they are forced apart, both grieving and lonely and hurt. But once Max is in danger, El moves heaven and hell to be with her and fight for her. And Max also tries to defend El from Vecna. When Max dies, El finds the idea of a world without her so unbearable that she reshapes reality. She restarts Max‘s heart and when she can‘t find Max, she promises to once again move heaven and hell to be there for her.

Their friendship was so moving and well done female friendship is truly still so hard to find in popular media.

And season 5? All of that? Gone.
