Victor had chased him here, that much he remembers clearly.

The pursuit had been frantic at first—boots slipping, breath ragged, a man driven by horror of his own making. The creature had let himself be seen. Let Victor follow. There was a grim satisfaction in that, though he did not yet have the language to name it.

The forest started singing before the trouble came.

Not with birds or crickets or anything living, but with wood.

The trees creaked against one another in the wind like old bones shifting in a shallow grave, and every now and then something further in would crack. Distant and sharp, cutting through the night in a way that made you pause in your small, warm cottage. 

You stood at your worktable, herbs spread out before you in neat, brittle little piles. The cottage smelled of thyme and smoke and a hint of something metallic that hadn’t quite left yet, no matter how long you kept the windows cracked.

You told yourself that smell was your imagination.

WHAT WOLVES FEAR MASTERPOST

Twilight had always made the cottage feel like something enchanted and tonight it felt especially so. Adam had gone hunting in the woods and the hush of early evening began settling like soft hands over the crooked roof.

You moved through the cottage slowly, lighting candles one by one until warm gold flickered across the walls. You’d been saving dried lavender for weeks, hoarded from the garden you and Adam had coaxed back to life, and tonight felt like the right night to use it.

You sprinkled it into the steaming bath, watching the petals bloom into pale purple islands on top of the water.

Steam curled around your face, the candles glowed and for the first time in days, you felt yourself breathe.

You undressed, slipping into the heat with a sigh that seemed to loosen every muscle in your body. You leaned your head back, closing your eyes, letting the scent of lavender wrap around you.

You didn’t hear the door open. But you heard the moment Adam realized you weren’t in the main room.

“Little one?” His voice was tight, alarmed and desperately searching.
