A parallel between Harry and Draco that should be discussed more - and is a major reason why Draco is actually capable of understanding Harry better than most - is that they both endured the harrowing experience of living in unsafe homes. With Harry, it was torment by the Dursleys. With Draco, it was torment by Voldemort and the Death Eaters in the manor. All of Harry’s loved ones his age grew up in caring and stable homes. Ron, Hermione, Neville, Luna, and indeed Ginny can never truly understand Harry’s trauma of being constantly on edge every day, unable to ever truly relax, bracing himself for mistreatment by adults at every corner in his own house, in the place that does not make him feel secure and at peace when it should. But Draco can.
