#storm reads classic lit - thoughts on old books!

end of january affirmations

my art doesnt suck

instagram is nothing to me

I love thinking I'm a hater and then meeting a real hater and going wow that does not look fun actually. Going back to my lukewarm hater ways. Performative haterdom. I couldn't name five hater bands.

there’s absolutely something to be said about ‘booktok’ books being largely wattpad quality written erotica i’m certainly not reading them however having seen a guy on tiktok make a video like ‘all the women in your life are READING PORN’ about a book he picked up and read in his FEMALE FRIEND’S HOUSE in a tone of scandalised horror and disgust i actually don’t think men should be making those criticisms. he said he picked it up expecting a romance and was horrified it was GOONER SHIT he said specifically like ‘who are you getting your pussy wet FOR??’ in a tone of revulsion. idk man im not sure shes the weird one. i kind of wish you were dead

"a lot of books that are successful on booktok are not very good" and "people can read what they want and we need to stop being so fucking weird about women enjoying erotica" are both correct statements

white americans when you tell them that the idea of climate change as an impending disaster is a reductive first world perspective because it’s a tangible reality for many in the global south already:

maybe if you see south and southeast asians dying in the heat and latin americans dying in floods and all you think of is imagining a reality where YOU are affected, then you should rethink how you see people of color. if you cannot see climate change as a real disaster until it is other americans dying in the heat and the floods and not just black and brown people, then don’t talk about climate change until you can acknowledge the grim reality of climate change for everyone.

Maybe I'm new here but is no one talking about these lines??? SO MUCH TO UNPACK HERE BRO JAVERT ARE YOU GOOD

I remember being astounded and excited about 18 months ago when I first read these lyrics! Yes, there is a ton to unpack, and it’s so fun! :D

Instead of True Crime, there should be a genre called True Law. everyone researches heinous acts of cruelty that were entirely, perfectly legal & sanctioned by the governments of their countries. Instead of True Crime’s freakish eugenicist obsession with “The Criminal Mind” (as if “criminals” are a biologically different species) —-the True Law podcasters could describe horrific acts of violence committed by police officers & prison guards & soldiers &etc, and breathlessly attempt to understand the twisted mysteries of “The Legal Mind.” It’s necessary, for Equality

Rules of the Les Misérables magic system (as far as I can figure out):

  • As long as there is still suffering to be had, Jean Valjean cannot die
  • Jean Valjean has super strength which cannot be depleted by age or his poor ability to look after himself (up to a point)
  • Once a person has met Cosette, lack of proximity to her will slowly drain their life force
  • The dead benevolently haunt those they loved while alive (ily ghost!Fantine)
  • Javert has an incredible ability to recognise potential criminals (read people from lower social classes)
  • Eponine has the ability to blend into the background but cannot turn this power off
  • The only one immune to this power is Javert which isn’t very helpful

bonus:

  • Javert is immune to guns

Servant: Your highness, a party of adventurers has answered your call for help.

King: Excellent. What are they like?

Servant: One of them is a dragon-lady.

King: Interesting. Those are rare around these parts.

Servant: Another is a goblin paladin.

King: Not a role you usually see goblins in.

Servant: A third is a purple-skinned tiefling.

King: I didn't even know they come in that color.

Servant: The last one is a sapient gelatinous cube.

King: What. How did these four even meet?

Servant: They met in a tavern two hours ago, apparently.

Queen: My love, please return to bed.

King: *pacing* Why would a gelatinous cube come to a tavern? Can it even get drunk? How did it fit through the doors?

Emotional Walls Your Character Has Built (And What Might Finally Break Them)

(How your character defends their soft core and what could shatter it) Because protection becomes prison real fast.

Sarcasm as armor. (Break it with someone who laughs gently, not mockingly.) Hyper-independence. (Break it with someone who shows up even when they’re told not to.) Stoicism. (Break it with a safe space to fall apart.) Flirting to avoid intimacy. (Break it with real vulnerability they didn’t see coming.) Ghosting everyone. (Break it with someone who won’t take silence as an answer.) Lying for convenience. (Break it with someone who sees through them but stays anyway.) Avoiding touch. (Break it with accidental, gentle contact that feels like home.) Oversharing meaningless things to hide real depth. (Break it with someone who asks the second question.) Overworking. (Break it with forced stillness and the terrifying sound of their own thoughts.) Pretending not to care. (Break it with a loss they can’t fake their way through.) Avoiding mirrors. (Break it with a quiet compliment that hits too hard.) Turning every conversation into a joke. (Break it with someone who doesn’t laugh.) Being everyone’s helper. (Break it when someone asks what they need, and waits for an answer.) Constantly saying “I’m fine.” (Break it when they finally scream that they’re not.) Running. Always running. (Break it with someone who doesn’t chase, but doesn’t leave, either.) Intellectualizing every feeling. (Break it with raw, messy emotion they can’t logic away.) Trying to be the strong one. (Break it when someone sees the weight they’re carrying, and offers to help.) Hiding behind success. (Break it when they succeed and still feel empty.) Avoiding conflict at all costs. (Break it when silence causes more pain than the truth.) Focusing on everyone else’s healing but their own. (Break it when they hit emotional burnout.)
