like i’ve been that person who freaks out every time my friends don’t message me back. it comes free with being 19. but if you’re in your 30s and you still follow up every un-replied-to dm with a chain of “do you hate me?” “are you mad” “am i bad” “am i a bad person?” “do you hate me?” “should i kill myself” messages. you really really need to get a fucking grip. your friends have a life outside of you. especially internet friends. like it’s sad but true, outside of synchronous calls, people are not 100% devoting their attention to your dms. people are having dinner with their parents, going to medical appointments, working on art/writing, feeding their animals, making coffee, while you might be messaging them about your deepest feelings ever. and you can’t expect people to always be able to drop everything to message you back. if you need undivided attention, schedule a call, or ask them if you can talk later when they’re free.

When I was a kid, other kids used to call me a whale, especially when I was in the public swimming pool. But here's the thing: my hometown is on a whale migration path. Whales are woven into the local indigenous culture and greatly revered. Tourists come to see the whales and go on whale watching boat tours. Even most of the locals are enchanted by them after many years of seeing them pass by offshore. They are featured in murals, on tourist brochures, in the logos and names of multiple local businesses, in the paintings and sculptures of many local artists. People will flock to a lookout just to glimpse a fin or tail through binoculars. I've heard it described as life changing to see one up close. They are graceful and awe-inspiring. Other insults hurt me, but that one never could.
I’ve finally started blocking people for frivolous reasons and I can’t recommend it enough. If a post makes me think “you’d be a drag to talk to at a party” I block on site. And I’m happier than I’ve ever been on the internet.
