COMMISSIONS OPEN

Just got hit with a very ouchy vet bill. Magnolia Rat needed a tumor removed. This is even more rough so soon after Sasha Rat’s after-hours euthanasia.

a biome so unique in south africa that it's earned an entirely new biome classification for itself. so many plants are endemic to this area, and ofc it's under threat of extinction.

It's a wonderful place! I had the privilege of visiting the fynbos last year and it was as amazing as these photos show and more!

Fynbos is so unique because the conditions it developed in are honestly stupidly inhospitable. The climate is good and often foggy but the soil is AWFUL (zero nutrients, too sandy or clay-y to hold water) and it burns ALL the time. Fire and Fynbos go hand in hand. There are also a wide range of pollinators available. The area is very mountainous with a variety of altitudes. As a result, the plants are extremely opportunistic and basically launch themselves into new niches at every possible opportunity, becoming super specialized for their 2x2 meter patch of ground and one or two pollinators and their own method of collecting and/or storing water. Evolution had to get very creative.

The hardship and need for super-speciality means that fynbos is

a) extremely diverse
b) confined to a very specific area where those conditions are met, where they cannot be out-competed by faster growing plants
c) often dependent on regular burns (a problem at the intersection of human development and fynbos)

It’s a stunning biome, and well worth a visit if you get the chance. Just wear long pants if you hike through it because it was specially designed by god to remove maximum skin from your legs. Also ticks. And snakes. And baboons (don’t feed them, DON’T FEED THEM. If people feed them they become aggressive and must be shot).

Munkustrap is actually pretty hard to draw. I really want to capture the actor’s long legged thing but it’s quite hard to combine with a cat while still making the cat look strong and sturdy. Cats have short legs and long bodies, and making them look “strong” usually creates a top heavy look.

Basically finding the right blend of cat and human is tricky and his Munk Legs™ are making my life hard.

I’m so sorry for what my Cats obsession is doing to your dashboard
