A digital illustration of my D&D bard Verelin and the dead god he serves, Dov. On a deep purple backdrop of scattered with motes of vivid teal and blue, two figures stand with heads leaned together and bodies almost touching. They are framed by a golden circle of repeating star and drop-spindle motifs, references to the powers over Fate that Dov once possessed. The two stand as if they’re dancing: cheeks touching, hands joined at shoulder level, Dov's ethereal fingers subtly overlapping Ver's. Dov has no physical body: they are an outline filled with the suggestion of light and stars. Where their palms touch, Ver’s hands glow, as ribbons of gold magic flow around their joined fingers. Part of Ver’s face is splotched with a spot that mimics the colors and texture of Dov’s body. Ver’s eyes are on their hands; Dov looks sidelong at Ver, smiling slyly. Only one of them has realized their attraction.ALT

Now that she’s seen it, please enjoy the christmas gift I made my partner of our D&D characters!

Huge shout out to all the people who read fics. Who actually take the time out of their busy days to open a fic and read it

Before I started writing in earnest, I did not understand how much writing was going to eat into my fic reading time. We joke about having too many tabs open, but I have a different problem: the amount of tabs I have open on new fics is way smaller than it used to be. My ao3 wrapped would be a sad affair. Unless I’ve subscribed to an author or come across something on my dash, I basically don’t see it

Which has really driven home for me how much fandom cannot just be creators. You have to have people who want to read fic and meta discussions and joke posts. You have to have people who want to look at art and gifs. It has to be mutual.

Community thrives on flow. You have to have that movement of people sharing things with each other for a community to exist

Thank you fic readers. You keep things flowing

I just wrote 8 pages when I haven’t written in months and was beginning to think I’d never be able to again. Idk what it is, but I am sharing and manifesting this energy for every writer who sees this. May you write 8 quality pages effortlessly and find joy writing once more

Forged by anger.

[id: art of sir julien davinos. he stands in the midst of a grassy field in front of a nighttime sky. fog clouds the space behind him, and glowing red-orange light in the background resembles magic, or perhaps fire. the moon in the sky above the trees is full and red. julien is turned away from the viewer, staring back over his shoulder at them. he wears his armor and coat, and his green cape swirls around his front, blown by the wind. his rapier is extended out towards the viewer in one hand. a spectral figure hovers behind julien. it has long, spindly limbs and multiple glowing lights hidden in a black void beneath a spectral hood where a face should be. tendrils of fog trail out behind it. its arms wrap around julien, with one touching his shoulder pauldron and the other caressing his hair. julien stares at the viewer with an intense, wary expression. end id.]

Something I think ppl who aren’t used to it struggle with when it comes to ancient history is that frequently ‘we do not and cannot know this’ is the only truthful response a historian can give. People severely overestimate how much we actually know about Ancient Rome.

I remember talking to someone at a party once about the debate over Septimius Severus’s ethnicity (whole other can of worms) and they asked if genetic testing of his remains was not a way to settle it and I was like oh. Oh okay you are under the impression we have the physical remains of Roman emperors from the second century AD alright then. (We. Do not.)

Can’t stress how much of high level study of Ancient History is devoted to trying to make sense of what actually factually happened. When I was at university (10+ years ago now) the discipline was embroiled in the lengthy and ongoing process of trying to unpack not just the biases in ancient sources but the centuries & centuries of biases within the field itself. I don’t imagine this process is ever going to Stop. It’s not uncommon for historical accounts to be so garbled & contradictory that it’s not possible to reconstruct the real events behind them.

Once in an introductory lecture one of my professors was talking about this problem and articulated it very simply as 'we know real things happened between real people, but we aren’t sure what they were’. Sums it up really!!

i was in the grocery store and saw an onion on the ground and picked it up, absently saying “poor little guy.” behind me a teenage girl started laughing and then stopped and went “aww. i’m sorry for laughing. that’s nice actually.” and the cycle of cruelty is broken for another generation as a young person realizes that it is not embarrassing to have empathy for another thing that was once living, because certainly to be a lone white onion rolling on the ground in a supermarket would be terrifying to anyone
