Not many people realize that wild boar are chipmunks during the larval stage

The guy is saying a Japanese phrase that in this case basically translates to “you can do it! Keep at it!” and I think that adds to the overall awesomeness of this video

▶ would u rather fight a buff nerd or a jock who listens to jazz

powerburial:

things to remember:

  • nerd has a lot of pent-up anger, might pretend you are his dad
  • because of the jock’s exposure to jazz music, his attack patterns and movements are a lot less predictable

Homeschooling should be completely illegal imo, but at the VERY least, we need a national standard of testing and check ins with mandatory reporters. The HSLDA will send you bomb threats if you try, though.

You think I’m joking about the bomb threats? I’m not.

Another reason for homeschooling to be banned/regulated out of existence: the annoying homeschooled adults in the notes arguing that, yeah ok, SOME homeschool kids might be horrifically abused, denied a basic education (and therefore making it nigh impossible to seek higher levels of education), isolated, and in the worst circumstances, don’t even SURVIVE…. But I think I turned out fine, and as the main character of the universe, I think my individual experience should hold more weight.

We need to bring up that Ursula K LeGuin quote about commodified fantasy more often. We need to be meaner.

“Commodified fantasy takes no risks: it invents nothing, but imitates and trivializes. It proceeds by depriving the old stories of their intellectual and ethical complexity, turning their truth-telling to sentimental platitude. heroes brandish their swords, lasers, wands, as mechanically as combine harvesters, reaping profits. Profoundly disturbing moral choices are sanitized, made cute, made safe. The passionately conceived ideas of the great story-tellers are copied, stereotyped, reduced to toys, molded in bright-colored plastic, advertised, sold, broken, junked, replaceable, interchangeable. What the commodifiers of fantasy count on and exploit is the insuperable imagination of the reader, child or adult, which gives even these dead things life- of a sort, for a while.” ― Ursula K. i hate that concerns about urban gardening/foraging safety is often met with “What are you, a cop?” scorn. I believe it’s a suspicion of anything that hinders the punk/anti-system urgency to jump in immediately and do whatever feels right.

Safety, ethics, and sustainability are all a part of urban gardening and foraging. I’m sorry that means you need to do homework before you can do anything, I know that sounds lame. But life is complicated.

I know anti-intellectualism is viewed as activist these days, but like, surely you don’t want to literally eat lead, right?

Let’s check in and see how those rascally solarpunk kids are doing, surely they’ve learned by now that…..

A Reddit post of a well-meaning but unfortunately misguided person teaching people how to grow kale in sidewalk cracks and tree wellsALT

Daily reminder: Leafy greens like kales uptake all those delicious heavy metals in urban soils like lead and cadmium.

Don’t eat sidewalk-crack kale.

Here’s some cool references from the EPA on safe urban gardening:

Which Garden Crops Are Suitable to Grow in Contaminated Soils? Some garden crops can take advantage of these natural barriers. However, the physical contamination of crops by soil dust, splash or aerial deposition can often bypass the natural barriers of protection. Practices to reduce the physical contamination of garden food crops and to reduce human exposure therefore become important. In addition to what is known about contamination pathways, the results of past research also provide some information about the potential for heavy metal transfer into garden crops. All of this information allows for recommendations for garden crops that are most and least suitable for growing directly in contaminated soils. These resources will be updated and expanded in the future as new information and research fi ndings become available. Most Suitable ♦ Vegetable Fruits and Seeds: tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, okra (seed pods only), squash (summer and winter), corn, cucumber, melons, peas and beans (shelled or cleaned very thoroughly), onions (bulb only) ♦ Tree Fruits: apples, pears ♦ Berries: blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries (if cleaned very thoroughly) Least Suitable* ♦ Green Leafy Vegetables: lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard, beet leaves, cabbage, kale, collards ♦ Other Vegetables: broccoli, caulifl ower ♦ Root Crops: carrots, potatoes, turnips *Given the many health benefi ts of consuming fresh fruits and vegetables, every attempt should be made to use the steps outlined on the previous pages to create healthy garden conditions to grow a variety of desirable crops. However, eating fruits and vegetables grown in contaminated soils may have both benefi ts and risks. In particular, the vegetables on the Least Suitable listALT

American friends: If you are so convicted to donate to food banks during the ending of SNAP benefits, as someone who worked in nonprofit, please know it is much more impactful to donate MONEY than it is to donate food. Food banks can order items in bulk and get them tax free, and it gives them the flexibility to order what they need.

Check on your neighbors, help each other out 🙏🏻

Someone may have already put this in the notes, but if you’re donating money to a food bank, and they’re a tax-deductible charity and your employer offers matching donations, please look into that! I completely forgot until this post came around that this was an option. I just went in and submitted my receipt, which automatically doubled the $100 I sent to my local food bank to $200. This will really stretch the amount of food that they are able to buy at no additional cost to you.

Where’s that one video of the guy yelling “One dollar’s worth of food, coming through!” as he pushes an enormous pallet of vegetables?

When I donated $50, the splash page informed me I had donated ?? FIVE HUNDRED (500) ?!?! MEALS???!!!
