Maybe it's naive of me, but whenever I see portraits like this, with just a father and daughter, it restores my faith in humanity a little. Because people seem to love this idea that fathers never loved their daughters in the past and only saw them as bargaining chips for marriage or whatever, but look at the guy in the first portrait on the left, he loves that little girl! And the dad trying to do his work while his daughter bothers him with an Old Timey Barbie. The man teaching his daughter geography, his expression is so soft! The way the man in the last portrait holds the little girl's hand! And none of these are incidental, these aren't photographs, someone (probably the father) paid good money and sat down for hours so that they could have a painting of themselves and their daughter. Probably because they loved their daughter.

From left to right: 1795 Michał Jerzy Mniszech with his daughter Elżbieta - Marcello Bacciarelli; Christopher Anstey and his daughter Mary Ann by William Hoare 1776; A Musician and His Daughter by Thomas de Keyser 1629; The Geography Lesson (Portrait of Monsieur G. and His Daughter), 1812; Jean-baptiste Isabey And His Daughter; Portrait of a Young Girl and Older Man by William Harrison Scarborough

(this is probably somewhat related to my other favourite genre of painting, Husband With Multiple Kids Making Come Hither Eyes At His Wife)

My specific criteria for this genre: cannot have the mom (then it's a family portrait, not a father/daughter), cannot have any male children included (see family portrait), and it's cuter if the girl is younger

The fact that people don't think friendship is enough to justify characters doing insane acts of love for each other baffles me. Like have you never loved your friend so so much you want to live in their ribcage. Have you never been really weird about a friend. Have you never wanted to bite your friends parents or shove them down a staircase. Have you never wanted to be buried in the same grave as a friend. Have u never. How do u people live like this.

this sooo goes for both queer ships in which people will say theres not het explanation while saying that of course same sex friends can exist and people who cant see a male female friendship as a friendship and just? like just friends? are friends less? of course those two are extremes people who say there is no other explanation completely seriously of course i ship non canon ships that are both queer and straight but as i said yesterday the worst interpretation is the one that thinks its the only one and the best one

I NEED movies to start portraying Menelaus being MISERABLE.

I’m so tired of the “Spartan man = emotionless brute” stereotype they gave him. SHOW HIM doubting before killing enemies. Show the moments where he feels pity for the men forced into war, for the lives that will never return home. Show him trying to avoid war peacefully, only for Paris to ruin it, because consequences have never been his concern. Yes, Menelaus is still a MAN whose honor has been shattered. Yes, he wants revenge. But what about the moments where he questions the gods? Where he wonders why this is his fate, why he is the one who has to endure this, after welcoming the Trojan prince into his home with hospitality, only to have his kingdom violated and his wife kidnapped. And how Zeus still favors the son of Troy.

And Helen, I am begging to them to stop romanticizing her Abduction. Stop turning her into this brainless, superficial pretty blonde. LET HER BE ANGRY. Let her snap back at Aphrodite. Let her rage at being treated like a toy for the goddess’s favorite pretty human boy. Let her scream at Paris for his cowardice, his selfishness, his refusal to take responsibility while others die for his choices. Show the guilt that was never hers slowly consuming her through years of cruelty and a war fought in her name, one she never asked for, because of men. Stop reducing her to "Paris's forbidden love", she was a mother, taken away from her HOME and daughter. Show her telling Aphrodite that if she loves Paris so much, she should sleep with him instead.

Show how complicated their relationship is once the war is over, twisted by the whims of a reckless prince and the cruelty of the gods. Show how love turns into resentment, how survival replaces romance, how neither of them comes out unmarked. Show the moment when Menelaus finally finds her, when he drops his sword, because he cannot see himself as capable of killing her. Show how Helen is tired and resigned, accepting the death she believes her former husband will give her.

stotic characters are the WORST like of course they can be done well but applied like this 90% of yhe time it just becomes a way to skip emotional depth

I’ve seen a lot of posts on my dash tonight about users who are threatening suicide, with other Tumblr members posting in effort to try to get ahold of them. I think you all should see this:

IF THERE IS EVER A TUMBLR USER WHO HAS POSTED A GOOD-BYE MESSAGE, SUICIDE NOTE, VIDEO, OR ANYTHING OF THE SORT, PLEASE FOLLOW THIS POST.

1. Scroll to the top of your dashboard.

2. See the circular question mark icon at the top? It’s the third one over from your home symbol. Click on that, and a screen similar to the one in the picture will come up.

3. Where you can type in questions, the box with the magnifying glass at the top, type in the word “suicide.”

4. Click on the first link that shows up. It should say, “Pass the URL of the blog on to us.”

5. Type in the user’s URL and tell Tumblr admin that the user is contemplating suicide and has posted a message indicating that they are going through with it or will be attempting. Hit send! Tumblr administration will perform a number of actions to contact the user and take the necessary steps to prevent the suicide.

TUMBLR: THIS COULD SAVE A USER’S LIFE. PLEASE DO NOT IGNORE SUICIDE THREATS.

Reblog this to keep other users aware. Suicide isn’t a joke, and neither is someone’s life. If you didn’t know this, someone else may not, either. Pass it on.

Anonymous asked:

I know people loooooove to obsess over Iliad and Odyssey yeah very popular cool! But aren't there other plays that not necessarily are about the epics that are underrated?

katerinaaqu answered:

For sure there are many if we talk on epic poetry (if that is what you mean by “plays”).

We have Hesiod for instance who lives in the same time period as Homer and some of his epics like “Theogony” or “Shield of Hercles” etc are on the table and generally underrated

Epic poetry like Apollonius Rhodius “Argonautica”, Quintus Smyrnaeus “Posthomerica” or the half-finished “Achilleid” by Statius and much much more like the attributed to Homer “Vatrachomyomachia”

Now if by “plays” we mean actual plays aka theatrical ones. Of course one can find gems among them and those who are not the usual “Iphigenia in Aulis” or something. You can find the sequel for instance “Iphigenia in Tauris” or “Orestes” or “Cyclops” by Euripides “Ajax” by Sophocles or his “Electra” the comedies of Aristophanes and so on and so forth

It really depends on what you are looking for.

i usually go on sites like theoi.com for figurrs im interested in and check out their the links to the original sources

As much as I like Menelaus visibly crashing out and drinking (which is sad to think about, blame @katerinaaqu for that haha!) I personally interpret him having this quiet dread for a long time. Not about Helen leaving, he was confident in her love for him, still tries to be, but in something in his life going massively wrong because of their family curse. And all he can think after hearing the news is come back. Come back. And while he looks like shit forming a diplomatic rescue and failing, drinking quietly and not letting others see his tears, come back he thinks as a mantra to get him through the day.

Come back, He thinks as he rubs his little girl's back, Hermione sobbing and wailing at a real nightmare and her mama isn't here, and her papa will leave her soon, no longer there to soothe her.

Come back, as he hears a joke from his fellow soldier that he knew Helen would laugh at, before that smile on his face falls gradually as he remembers he will not see the blonde locks on the shoulders that loved him laughing with him.

Come back, he thinks as he sees Helen high above the wall of Troy, high as a goddess, he cannot see her discern her face, if it was still a face that loved him. Come back, as he sneaks at night, his head pressed against silently at that same wall, crying quietly, just to feel close to her.

"Come back home Helen, please."

(He thinks Helen does not hear him, but she did. She does.
