Every January invites us to begin again, but rarely do we pause to ask what a beginning truly is. This year, we are starting not with resolutions or certainties, but with wonder. Throughout January, we will explore Fire, Wind, Water, and Earth as a reimagined creation story grounded in science, curiosity, and reverence. In the season of Epiphany and Three Kings Sunday, we draw on the image of the Magi as seekers who follow signs and bring gifts, reimagining the elements themselves as those gifts, the fundamental forces that shaped the universe and continue to shape us still. These are not symbolic elements alone, but the very materials and energies through which chaos became creation and consciousness emerged.
From Chaos to Consciousness: The Elements – The Magi of Creation is a four week journey through Fire, Wind, Water, and Earth as the original gifts that made creation possible. Like the Magi, these elements arrive not with answers, but with offerings. They are the forces that shaped the universe, formed our planet, and eventually gave rise to life and consciousness itself. This series unfolds during the season of Epiphany and Three Kings Sunday, a time traditionally associated with revelation, insight, and the recognition of what has been quietly arriving all along.

THE FIRST LIGHT:
FIRE, CREATION, AND THE COURAGE TO BECOME
LIVE IN THE SANCTUARY OR LIVETREAM ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL.
| | |
This service explores Fire as the first Magus of creation, the original gift that transformed chaos into possibility. From the heat and density of the early universe to the formation of stars, our Sun’s nuclear fusion, and the molten core of the early Earth, fire is revealed as the creative energy that made life possible. We reflect on how Earth’s internal heat and magnetic field protect life, and how volcanic and thermal conditions supported life’s emergence. Through Fire Communion, participants are invited to release what no longer serves them and to name the inner fires shaping their becoming, honoring fire as both a cosmic force and a personal call to courage, change, and responsibility.

Join us after the service as we host our First Sunday of the Month potluck! This is a wonderful opportunity for togetherness and connections. Please bring a dish to share as part of the meal. Vegetarian and vegan options are welcomed. We are also a nut-free campus.

SUNDAYS IN JANUARY
FROM CHAOS TO CONSCIOUSNESS
THE ELEMENTS AND THE MAGI OF CREATION
| | |
This January, we return to the beginning through modern wonder rather than ancient certainty, exploring Fire, Wind, Water, and Earth as the elemental gifts that made creation possible. Drawing on science, cosmology, and reimagined creation stories from many cultures, this series unfolds during the season of Epiphany and Three Kings Sunday, invoking the Magi not as historical figures to be explained, but as seekers who arrive bearing gifts. In this telling, the elements themselves are the Magi of creation, the forces that emerged from cosmic chaos and shaped the universe, the Earth, and eventually life and consciousness. This series traces creation from the birth of the universe to the emergence of awareness, revealing that creation is not a finished event but an ongoing process. At its heart is a simple and unsettling truth: we are not separate from the universe, but made of it, stardust that has learned how to breathe, think, and wonder, inviting us to consider not what we believe about creation, but how we choose to live within it.

Beginning Monday, January 19th through Monday, February 16th, this annual event offers spiritual nourishment, political grounding, and shared practices of faith and justice. Each week, there will have a written reflection from Side With Love staff; a conversation with a UU theologian; a multigenerational family activity; reflection questions for journaling; a meditative body practice; and a coloring sheet connected to the weekly theme.
