What should have been remembered was lost...

@cuddly-koala

25. they/them/it/its. omnisexual idiot. I need a hug. for anyone about to send me an ask for money/donations, i apologize, but i am living paycheck-to-paycheck. i have nothing to give :(

From the article:

“If you look only at the trend of species declines, it would be easy to think that we’re failing to protect biodiversity, but you would not be looking at the full picture,” said Penny Langhammer, lead author of the study and Executive Vice President of Re:wild. What we show with this paper is that conservation is, in fact, working to halt and reverse biodiversity loss. It is clear that conservation must be prioritized and receive significant additional resources and political support globally, while we simultaneously address the systemic drivers of biodiversity loss, such as unsustainable consumption and production.”

This massive meta analysis (for those not familiar, a study analyzing the results of many studies on similar topics) found that the vast majority of conservation efforts show much much better results than doing nothing. In many cases, biodiversity loss was not only stopped but reversed.

This shows that conservation efforts really work and money invested is put to very good use. Legally protecting endangered species really works, restoring habitat really works, removing invasive species really works, returning land to Indigenous communities works. All of the blood, sweat, and tears being poured into protecting the natural world has been making a real, big, tangible, difference on a global scale.

Have you guys noticed how much the internet/technology just does not listen to you anymore? I click “don’t show this artist” on Spotify and I get recommended a music video by them on the front page. I click “skip this update” on a pop up every time I open a file organization app and it’s right back there every time. O click unsubscribe on a newsletter and it keeps showing up in my inbox!! I click “delete my account” and the next time I open the website they suggest I “reactivate”.

Power is a funny thing.

😈 You are not bound by the Hays code.

😈 You are allowed to have evil characters who are not punished by the narrative by the end of the story.

😈 You are allowed to have evil characters who win.

😈 You are allowed to have evil characters who make evil look fun and cool.

😈 You are allowed to make your fun, cool evil character the protagonist.

😈 You are allowed to glorify, romanticize and eroticize evil characters and villainous acts.

😈 You are not obligated to teach your audience a moral lesson.

No, I would not steal a car. However, if I had the ability to create a copy of someone's car that I could have for free while the other person retained their original car, I would definitely do that.

at least according to several .edu websites I can find, you can get dehydrated in the winter easily because cold air holds less moisture (I knew this) so the cold air can take the moisture out of your skin even if you don't sweat (did NOT know this) and also the urge to drink water is less in cold weather (didn't consciously consider this)

I know in plants, wind blowing over them will cause transpiration to occur faster and more water loss, I wonder if its the same with this process?

man I don't know if it's just that my autism interpreted basic information about the world that leaves out details as extremely rigid rules when I was a kid, but I feel like i'm constantly learning things like this. It was a couple years ago that I became confused as hell about my bodily water cycle cause something wasn't adding up, and learned that water escapes the body through breath (I mean...obviously, but not to me???) and I was like okay. everything I read that told me I lose water through urine, feces and sweat could easily have included this but they didn't and that's stupid

I am perpetually enraged at resources that give general rules or guidelines without sharing WHY. especially when its a crap methodology

for example I just looked at a website that said "if youre assigned female at birth you will need around 9 cups of water a day and if male at birth around 13 cups of water a day"

I think to myself. What does it mean? Why does birth notation of gender matter? Does something about the vagina or uterus mean that less water is needed? Or is it something about the endocrine system dominated by estrogen?

But judging by the difference between the two numbers given, I think it's actually just the average woman's body size being smaller than the average man's body size,

so what they are ACTUALLY saying is, if your body is the size that is average for women, you need this much, and if your body is the size that is average for men, you need this much

but clearly, assigned male vs. assigned female is a horribly inaccurate way to divide up people by water needs, because body size varies extremely widely. a 135 lbs man and a 200 lbs woman are not very unusual, but she needs 9 cups of water per day while he needs 13 cups of water per day, because "man or woman" is the most useful proxy for "body size" you can think of???

It's the same way with basically every human need that scales according to body size too they will say things like "men need on average 2200 calories a day and women need 1800"

but like. it is, as far as I know, not actually true that "femaleness" equals lower nutrient requirements. between two groups of humans with otherwise identical stats, but one group with condition "femaleness," I don't think the "female" group will need 400 less calories per individual

i believe that it is just that. smaller humans need less nutrients than larger humans due to being smaller.

and instead of saying that, they said "well, since men tend to be larger than women as a very general rule, we should use men and women as representatives of two basic categories of humans, "humans that are kinda smaller" and "humans that are kinda larger"

for NO FUCKING REASON

i think it would be enlightening to science to actually try to isolate different aspects of biological sex as variables

like studying a group of people that are all 6ft tall and see how "person with vagina" differs from "person with penis" within this group

lots of times, writings are talking about gender or sex but it's basically a proxy for something else that is one aspect of things referred to as "gender" or "sex" but not the whole

what would happen if we studied people divided up by levels of testosterone in the body but did not divide them by "sex"

i was researching studies on hormones one time, and learned that usually, women with PCOS or other "abnormality" affecting hormones are excluded from the study!!...which could substantially affect the results, since women with PCOS are like, what, 10% of women?

Hey there, Minnesotan here.

Are you outside of Minnesota, but want to know what’s going on with the ICE occupation? Check out:

  • On Site a local independent news organization covering accurate news here.
  • Toussaint Morrison, who writes for On Site but has a lot of good coverage
  • Georgia Fort, an independent journalist covering what’s happening on the ground
  • And of course, the videos being posted directly to social media from people on the ground.

National news is not covering everything that’s happening here. (Almost like that’s on purpose.) But these are helpful, local sources to Minnesota to provide an accurate depiction of what’s really happening here.

Are you outside of Minnesota and looking to help?

These links go to those sources’ Instagram profiles. And I will edit this post with more, it’ll remain a living document.

A final note: You may have seen posts on social media about what it’s like here. Believe them. It is that bad. It is that scary. They are kicking doors down. They are demanding to see identity papers if you’re simply walking on the street.

My sister is a teacher, and they were driving around her school yesterday. A middle school.

They are offering people money to out undocumented immigrants or protest organizers. That link is a firsthand account of someone who was detained, and asked those very questions.

They are taking our neighbors.

This is an occupation.

I don’t have a lot of followers, so hoping the tags can help spread this far and wide.

This guy alone just filled my "live your life with passion" quota for the year.

Funniest thing is the quick "settle down mate" and the dip into the Australian accent as he gushes over how pretty it is.

Knowing herpetologists: literally every one of them under 40 was influenced by Steve Irwin. The Austrailian accent and repetition of Irwinesque phrases (what a beauty, look at the size of this fella) is involuntary but an important part of the snake catching ritual.
