Holy sh*t this made me realize something.
So back in 2025, I became OBSESSED with Harvey Fierstein (long story) and I came across a song he made back in the early 90s called "The Final Song"
https://youtu.be/EkfAwSddHrw?si=p0M_R0B3wvKoE0sp
It's a song about what the final day might be like for those who lived through/survived the A.I.D.S Crisis of the 80s and 90s when the cure is finally found. One stanza that has always devastated me is " I wonder what I'll feel when they fold the quilt away Will I dance and celebrate? Or scream and yell, like bloody hell For those who could not wait 'Cause it took too goddamn long For the final song". Since I was born in 2002, I'm incapable of fully internalizing and understanding this specific feeling that Fierstein and queer people of his generation will have to bear. However, for people of my generation, I think the death of DT will be our own version of this.
I know when the day comes I'll feel some happiness and want to celebrate with my fellow queer siblings in the streets. At the same time, though, I know I'll also feel grief. Grief for the trans people who have been persecuted, demonized, and outright murdered because of the rhetoric DT and his cult followers spewed. Grief for the various communities who are literally being torn apart and left to die by the hands of ICE and all those who support their ethnic cleansing campaign. Grief for all those queer people who wanted to have a simple and joyful childhood, teenagehood, or adulthood but were denied that because their very existence somehow threatened the "natural order" and "master race".
Not all of us are going to outlive him. But for those of us who do, we have to put in the effort to make sure they are remembered and loved long after him.
Ugh... Brb, I'm gonna go make a Letterboxd exclusive blog π
Is Letterboxd going to slowly turn into Spotify?
They're doing their "Year in Review" thing and clearly putting more effort into it with all the individual posts showcasing what was popular throughout the year. Yet, I can't help but get the feeling that if they keep going down this road they'll eventually run into the same issue Spotify did: How do we go bigger than last year? The answer as of now, it seems, is A.I.
I'm not entirely sure what Letterboxd stance is on A.I but I'm really hoping they don't introduce anything having to do with it. The whole point of the app is that it's passionate lovers of cinema doing the work themselves to look for and interact with new movies. Idk, maybe I'm just trying to force scrutiny where there doesn't need to be.
