-How to purchase

  • From my main Spoonflower shop page, under my quilt block avatar, click “Designed Collections.”
  • Scroll down to the collection titled “DIY Prayer Flags.” (or just click this link)
  • Near the top where it says “Want to use this collection for a Fill-A-Yard™ project?” click “Start Designing.”
  • Choose the template “2 yards/up to 4 designs” (This means you can order four strings of prayer flags, for yourself or to share with friends!)
  • Choose your fabric: chiffon makes gorgeous semi-transparent prayer flags that really catch the light in beautiful ways. Performance piqué is a less transparent option, but I liked how it worked for flags. I’m sure any fabric you are comfortable seeing would be good!
  • Click design Project.
  • Click on the design photo you want, and then click one of the rectangles on the left, and you’ll see it fill. Repeat with the other three rectangles.
  • Add to cart and await the magic mail!

-How to sew and put the flags together

Prayer flags are designed to fray, allowing the prayers and blessings to be carried on the winds to every corner of the earth, so they don’t require a lot of hemming, just one easy straight stitch.

Typically I will iron down the long top hem BEFORE cutting (see below). Next, I sew about a 1/2” seam along the long edge, backstitching wherever the flags come together. THEN I cut apart along the flags’ short edges (and since you’ve backstitched thoroughly, it should stay secure), either with scissors or a rotary cutter. A scalloped rotary cutter blade is awesome. Then string your long ribbon through the top edges and voilá!
