Dark Skies

ABOUT THIS SONG:

I had the privilege of getting to perform a few songs as part of the Dark Skies In Appalachia Symposium at Colgate University in April of 2024. This song was written in anticipation of that conference, and inspired by that opportunity.

This song itself is an ode to the night sky, simultaneously so empty and so full, so dark and so luminous, rife with our most existential riddles and our most essential solutions. The darker the sky, the more transparent our window into the cosmos, and the more alluring the invitation to explore further, puzzle harder, and question deeper. And the darker the sky, the brighter the clarity of our mysteries, our investigations, our discoveries, and our epiphanies.

THE BEAUTIFUL COVER PHOTO:

Dave Green was one of the featured presenters at the symposium, and his work was incredibly provocative and inspiring.I want to thank him for allowing me to use one of his stunning photographs as the cover art for this song. I can’t imagine a more perfectly fitting companion piece of visual art to help tell this song’s story. Please check out the rest of Dave’s work. He’s making masterpieces of the sky’s relationship to the ground.

DARK SKIES (lyrics):

Dark skies they open up your eyes
Dark skies they open up your eyes
Wide eyes are full of wonder
Pools of light when light was younger
That we can only see in the night

Dark skies they open up your eyes
Dark skies they open up your eyes
There’s just two laws that share the power
There’s falling in and there’s blazing outward
That make every shape in the sky

Dark skies they open up your eyes
Dark skies they open up your eyes
To chart the sky with fine precision
Is to talk with god about old time religion
Hmmm, hmmm . . . unblinded by all the light

Bridge:
Keep climbing to the highest peaks
Deep diving to the deepest deeps
Knowing that there’s more to know
Learning that there’s more to learn
Seeing that there’s . . .
Seeing that there’s . . .
Seeing that there’s ever more to see

Dark skies they open up your eyes
Dark skies they open up your eyes
Count the stars and weigh the dust
To guess the curve of heaven’s crust
Our fate is held in the weight of the sky
That’s right, it’s all in the dark of the night
