Tommy may not know how to scuba dive but he’s no stranger to donning a mask and some flippers to swim along the shallow reef when the tides are with him. He’s seen the beauty of the underwater world before, but never like this.
Rose-gold sunlight filters down from the surface, diffusing through the water creating an almost ethereal glow. Everything moves in slow motion down here. Predators can propel themselves with lightning speed but in moments of calm such as this he feels transported to another realm, one where magic governs time and space.
Evan moves gracefully through the kelp forest, body weaving in and out, tails twining behind him, scales glinting in shades of blue and green and pink he swears didn’t exist before today. The look of pure joy on his waterman face, at finally being healed enough to venture out for a transformative swim, had given way to something shy as he swam past Tommy, the light from above casting a rainbow unseen by Evan along the shimmering skin of his back, a colorful tattoo of pure light.
And now, as Evan’s gaze fixes on Tommy it gives way to something softer as his body twirls in slow, lazy rolls nearing closer and closer, eyes never wandering.
Tommy is mesmerised.
He thinks if Evan were to, somehow, unhinge his jaw right now and swallow him whole like Jonah and the whale, he would let him. If it would keep Evan happy, if it would pease him, he would not hesitate.
Tommy’s always been a romantic at heart and now apparently he can add ‘zero survival instinct’ to his list of self acknowledgements. For Evan, to keep Evan safe, to keep that smile on his beautiful face. If it came down to it, he would do it gladly.
As Evan approaches him he lines up perfectly to smoosh his lips against the plastic of Tommy’s goggles, pulling back with a toothy grin before arcing away in a self-satisfied set of loop-de-loops.
Showoff, he thinks, heart overflowing with fondness and knowing it shows on his face whether Evan can see it through his mask or not.
