the Knives Out filmmaking is fucking genius because it doesn't hide ANY of the murder mystery details that get revealed later on. The blood stain is ALWAYS on Marta's shoes. You can see Miles hand Duke his glass, take his gun and hide it. You see Blanc hand Helen the Klear. You hear the 'clangy clunk' of Jud hiding the flask in the first scene of Wicks's murder. You notice it all after it's revealed. It's not added in in the reveal scene. All of the clues are always there, you just DON'T SEE THEM. It just makes it feel so much more real.

something that really intrigues me with the relation between Blanc and Jud is how it is used as a tool for character development for Blanc specifically. Out of all of his Watsons, this is the one that clearly needs his help the most, but wants it the least.

Marta wasn’t even a suspect until Blanc came along, and during their investigation she is trying actively to keep him from solving the case. Blanc himself is a piece of the game in trying to frame her, and in the end she needs him mostly to reaffirm what she should have known the entire time, she is a good nurse.

Helen seeks Blanc out and asks him for help, but by the time they get to the island it is clear that she can handle herself, even getting most of the information Blanc needs to piece it all together. In the end, he doesn’t tell her what to do or how, just inspires her to take the matter into her own hands.

Following this, it’s easy to see why he hauls Jud into being his Watson so quickly. He sees him as an obviously innocent man, but one that needs all the help he can get to not get thrown in jail. It is perfect, a Watson in distress for Blanc to dazzle with his skills and save at the last moment. However, Jud fights this every step of the way. He cannot look at the body, he avoids the full truth in his retelling of events, he stalls opportunities for progression, he tells Blanc to leave him alone, and he tries to confess to murders he didn’t commit. He actively makes it harder for Blanc, not only to do his job, but to do it the way he wants to. It isn’t malice or evil intent, it is just the person Jud is, and it goes against so much of Blanc’s character that he is forced to change, and the audience is changed with him.

i know all of the watsons go through shit that just so happen to involve blanc, but jud seems to be the one who has impacted him the most.

in all of the films we get to learn more abt blanc despite him not being a MAIN main character in which the story isn’t revolved around him. his father (who was also a detective) once knew harlan. he sucks ass at any mystery themed games such as clue and among us. he is a gay man and has a husband and can get really fucking bored to the point where he isolates himself for a concerning amount of time. he was also raised in a religious family that may not have supported his rational mindset as well as his sexuality.

that last one is the one that stands out the most because that’s the one personal part of his life he has the most disdain over.

there isn’t that much to say when applying this to marta or helen (not to say they are bad characters when it comes to their dynamics w/ blanc), but jud is the one that actively and directly affects blanc. like you said, he cannot stand looking at wicks’ dead body and keeps confessing to shit he didn’t even do. he even lies on purpose when he writes his retelling of events. he calls blanc out after he has his “road to damascus” moment, something that blanc himself has at the end of the film bc of jud.

jud is the opposite of blanc in the sense that he sees the world as it is. he appreciates it without any hate in his heart and just wants to help those who are in uncertainty and desperation just like he once was.

he really believes that the world can change and grow. that people can be able to look back and reflect on past actions. and as much as blanc hesitates at first, he does realize the same thing.

not everything has to revolve around yourself all the time. at the very least give focus to those around you as well. maybe take a look around and see how much you and what’s around you have become. be proud yet humble. give grace to those who deserve it the most.

(sorry for the terrible yapping i just wanna talk abt my own thoughts bc i can't help it when it comes to characters such as him gahhghhh)
