EMERGENCY

hi everyone

i know ive been a real bummer lately and i really hate to ask especially during the holidays where money is already tight for many, but i am still homeless. i won't be able to keep hotel rooms for long even by skipping meals.

so as usual, i have commissions open:

i can even draw the image on the right for less. i draw about anything except nsfw, you can contact me on discord or on here for more info

my paypal is girlvasectomy1

i would be really grateful for any small help, and i really hope i will soon be able to stop begging and that good news will arrive, and that my blog will be back to normal

A general cane guide for writers and artists (from a cane user, writer, and artist!)

Disclaimer: Though I have been using a cane for 6 years, I am not a doctor, nor am I by any means an expert. This guide is true to my experience, but there are as many ways to use a cane as there are cane users!

This guide will not include: White canes for blindness, crutches, walkers, or wheelchairs as I have no personal experience with these.

This is meant to be a general guide to get you started and avoid some common mishaps/misconceptions in your writing, but you absolutely should continue to do your own research outside of this guide!

This is NOT a medical resource!!! And never tell a real person you think they're using a cane wrong!

The biggest recurring problem I've seen is using the cane on the wrong side. The cane goes on the opposite side of the pain! If your character has even-sided pain or needs it for balance/weakness, then use the cane in the non-dominant hand to keep the dominant hand free. Some cane users also switch sides to give their arm a rest!

A cane takes about 20% of your weight off the opposite leg. It should fit within your natural gait and become something of an extension of your body. If you need more weight off than 20%, then crutches, a walker, or a wheelchair is needed.

Putting more pressure on the cane, using it on the wrong side, or having it at the wrong height can make it less effective, and can cause long term damage to your body from improper pressure and posture. (Hugh Laurie genuinely hurt his body from years of using a cane wrong on House!)

(some people elect to use a cane wrong for their personal situation despite this, everyone is different!)

(an animated GIF of a cane matching the natural walking gait. It turns red when pressure is placed on it.)

When going up and down stairs, there is an ideal standard: You want to use the handrail and the cane at the same time, or prioritize the handrail if it's only on one side. When going up stairs you lead with your good leg and follow with the cane and hurt leg together. When going down stairs you lead with the cane and the bad leg and follow with the good leg!

Realistically though, many people don't move out of the way for cane users to access the railing, many stairs don't have railings, and many are wet, rusty, or generally not ideal to grip.

In these cases, if you have a friend nearby, holding on to them is a good idea. Or, take it one step at a time carefully if you're alone.

Now we come to a very common mistake I see... Using fashion canes for medical use!

(These are 4 broad shapes, but there is INCREDIBLE variation in cane handles. Research heavily what will be best for your character's specific needs!)

The handle is the contact point for all the weight you're putting on your cane, and that pressure is being put onto your hand, wrist, and shoulder. So the shape is very important for long term use!

Knob handles (and very decorative handles) are not used for medical use for this reason. It adds extra stress to the body and can damage your hand to put constant pressure onto these painful shapes.

The weight of a cane is also incredibly important, as a heavier cane will cause wear on your body much faster. When you're using it all day, it gets heavy fast! If your character struggles with weakness, then they won't want a heavy cane if they can help it!

This is also part of why sword canes aren't usually very viable for medical use (along with them usually being knob handles) is that swords are extra weight!

However, a small knife or perhaps a retractable blade hidden within the base might be viable even for weak characters.

Bases have a lot of variability as well, and the modern standard is generally adjustable bases. Adjustable canes are very handy if your character regularly changes shoe height, for instance (gotta keep the height at your hip!)

Canes help on most terrain with their standard base and structure. But for some terrain, you might want a different base, or to forego the cane entirely! This article covers it pretty well.

Many cane users decorate their canes! Stickers are incredibly common, and painting canes is relatively common as well! You'll also see people replacing the standard wrist strap with a personalized one, or even adding a small charm to the ring the strap connects to. (nothing too large, or it gets annoying as the cane is swinging around everywhere)

(my canes, for reference)

If your character uses a cane full time, then they might also have multiple canes that look different aesthetically to match their outfits!

When it comes to practical things outside of the cane, you reasonably only have one hand available while it's being used. Many people will hook their cane onto their arm or let it dangle on the strap (if they have one) while using their cane arm, but it's often significantly less convenient than 2 hands. But, if you need 2 hands, then it's either setting the cane down or letting it hang!

For this reason, optimizing one handed use is ideal! Keeping bags/items on the side of your free hand helps keep your items accessible.

When sitting, the cane either leans against a wall or table, goes under the chair, or hooks onto the back of the chair. (It often falls when hanging off of a chair, in my experience)

When getting up, the user will either use their cane to help them balance/support as they stand, or get up and then grab their cane. This depends on what it's being used for (balance vs pain when walking, for instance!)

That's everything I can think of for now. Thank you for reading my long-but-absolutely-not-comprehensive list of things to keep in mind when writing or drawing a cane user!

Happy disability pride month! Go forth and make more characters use canes!!!

the Pale is an ever-narrowing destruction of possibilities. the world grows smaller and smaller. like addiction narrows the range of pleasure, and despair and hopelessness narrow the range of possible futures. the Pale is a manifestation of these latent fears of the narrowing scope of history on the individual and societal levels

I wrote this for the Disco Elysium Wiki Project, but I'm posting it here too (you can check the sources over there)

Areas of the pale

Porch collapse

The point of transition between the world (matter) and the pale is known as porch collapse. Joyce describes it as "a grey coronal mist, cold vapour, marked by spores of an opportunistic microorganism - a mould that's adapted to grow at the edge of the unrest." When the pale is advancing, fruits mould when it is a few weeks away, and when it arrives it's likened to a killer wave or a tidal wave. A killer wave can come together from a number of smaller waves that one day birth a near-vertical, extremely unstable wave monstrosity. It absorbs the energy of the movement of other waves, and the water pulls around it more tightly. The normal waves turn into flickers and the killer wave almost collapses under its abnormal weight. But before that, there’s huge potential for destruction that it can sow. The same non-linear effect also explains the pale's advancement, they use it in entroponetics. It sounds like an ominous rumble, a low crackling noise, like a wave breaking, slowly. Objects float in this area, trees and buildings tear from the ground and slowly drift into the sky.

Near pale

Beyond the porch collapse, areas covered by the pale are mostly dim and grey. It can have a blue tint in the morning. Other colors are rare. It is also extremely silent, the spoken word and noises echo in it. Time sometimes freezes: movements stop, watches freeze. The time of day still changes, there is daylight and night time. Animals are able to travel within this area for a few weeks, before their sense of time gets broken down and they become comatose. Their brain strays in the pale faster than that of a human. Eventually, mould grows on them. People can only stay sane with the help of certain techniques or if they possess special entroponetic powers. In some places in this area the pale moves in waves. The near pale is about 30-40 kilometers from the edge to where the far pale begins.

Far pale

The world’s times of day don't register in the far pale at all. It is very dark, like looking into the ocean at night. It is also a territory that can advance. Going deep enough (perhaps crossing into the pale superdeep) makes one experience memories, colours and nostalgia. It's described as having a terrible smell. Once you've crossed from near pale to far pale only hybrid airships can tavel in it, because conventional rotors or jet engines no longer add velocity after the point of reference for motion is suspended. Sound here is detached from its source, if not blotted out outright, the faintest of hums can be heard. Sound recordings of the far pale exist.

Pale superdeep (Wild pale)

An uncharted entroponetic mass that is not lit by radio frequencies, it is silent and dark. The mind becomes radiant with the past here. The superdeep is also likened to sunlight. Motorway South and Rodionov's Trench is located within it or can be reached going through it.

Motorway South

There is a story longhaulsmen tell: way beyond the established known pale that's lit by radio frequencies, where it goes silent and dark - if one strays too far off course on the U41-A, or in Lomonossov's Land - there is a point in the pale superdeep where every step you take is one step further from home, no matter the direction. It's a point you cannot come back from. Your mind becomes so radiant with the past - there is a flip. Instead of writing, it erases memory. "Nearing some kind of indescribable finale." According to the Paledriver, no one knows what's at the end. According to Harry's Motorway South thought, to reach the end of the Motorway South is to be unborn. Nothing remains, everything is forgotten. "A blank space with no point of reference, where only one type of motion is possible. The motion of a human throat, swallowing."

Rodionov's Trench (Absolute negation)

Rodionov’s Trench is located in the heart of the pale, four thousand kilometres from the edge of the world. It would take years to fly there by an airship under usual conditions. Ion Rodionov wanted to use it as a weapon of mass negation against the bourgeoisie. It would have been the communist's answer to a nuclear weapon. He couldn’t find that place within his lifetime, it was discovered later by other people, presumably the communist entroponaut K. Saronovich Voronikin. There is a radio broadcast coming from Rodionov's Trench, hidden in the low-frequency waves. Repeating in an endless circle through all time, what for her (the person who is speaking) looking from the Trench is one and the same, a simultaneous and immeasurably complex event. It is a perfect closed system. The message is “Azimuth-Boreas-Sinus-Oreole-Laudanum Ultra-Tricoleur-Ellips-Nadir-Ellips-Gamut-Azimuth-Tricoleur Iikon-Oreole-Nadir”, the letters of the international alphabet, which read: ABSOLUTE NEGATION. This phase was known by Ion Rodionov too.

Swallow

The swallow is a pillar of silence located in the Dolorian Church of Humanity, with a diameter of approximately three meters, surrounding a two-millimetre hole in reality. The hole is located high up near the ceiling. The characters theorize that it could be an origin point of the pale, with the two-millimetre hole being the "less than less than nothing, the final rest state for reality", around which pale will eventually form.Soona finds it's location with her radiocomputer when it produces a print filled with black ink and a single white dot. Sound in the swallow gets muted, an effect that's stronger the closer the object making sound is to the hole. It sounds like far pale if one stands near it. Listening to the mathematical information from the anomaly as a waveform with Soona's equipment produces silence with a slight pressure change. With the raver's sound system the silence gradually become a low bass hum,a vibrating sound that shakes the building. The sound doesn't come from the speakers, it gets stuck in the mixing desk in a positive feedback loop until Egg Head pulls the plug. Harry feels like it originates from within him. The anomaly can also swallow information, like the game studio's data from the Doomed Commercial Area. Getting close to the two-millimetre hole causes memory loss. Tiago has been circling it for some time, and has forgotten most of his past but still remembers his name.He religiously worships it. He says he's a saeraff and calls the swallow the Mother of Silence. He believes that directly touching it will cause one to be "incinerated, but not destroyed - finally at one with the state of the world before reality began." Inland Empire wonders if a similar thing happened to Harry too. Martin Lugia supported the theory that the detective experienced amnesia after he interacted with it while he was drunk. The church might have been built around the anomaly to contain it.

The end of Motorway South, Rodionov's Trench and the swallow are similar. My theory is that the swallow really is a "baby pale" -a small scale model of what the pale is. Rodionov's Trench is the heart of the pale, a hole in reality, and the pale is what is around it.

There are also mentions of "light that shines through everything" and "beyond the light" in relation to the pale that are hard to put anywhere. "It is not light that spills from the windows into the golden room, but a super deep paleness." but the pale superdeep is also described as dark and black.
